예수님이라면 어떻게 하실까



찰스 쉘던 목사님의 <예수님이라면 어떻게 하실까>는 고등학교 졸업했을 때 선물로 받아 읽은 책이다. 이 책을 함께 읽었던 선후배, 친구들 사이에서 논쟁이 벌어졌던 기억이 난다. 어떤 이들은 이 책의 긍정적인 면을 강조했고 어떤 이들은 부정적인 면을 얘기하면서 서로 팽팽하게 맞섰다.



긍정적인 측면을 강조하는 이들의 논리는 말 그대로 예수님의 제자인 우리는 당연히 예수님을 닮고자 노력해야 하고 그렇기에 어떤 일을 함에 있어서 예수님처럼 생각하고 행동하는 태도를 가져야 한다는 것이었다. 반면 이를 반대하는 이들은 인간의 생각 안에 예수님을 가둔다는 논리를 펼쳤다. 그 당시 개인적으로는 부정적 견해를 제시한 이들에 조금 더 공감하는 쪽이었다.



세월이 흘러 이번에 이 책을 다시 읽으면서 과연 그때 그 생각들이 어떤지를 생각해볼 수 있었다. 결론적으로 말하자면 당연히 우리는 예수님이라면 어떻게 하실 지를 고민하고 그에 따르는 행동을 해야 한다는 것이다. 이런 생각에는 한 가지 전제조건이 있다. 모든 생각과 판단의 근거가 성경이어야 한다는 점이다.



그 당시 나누었던 얘기처럼 우리의 생각 안에 예수님을 가두는 일은 잘못된 일이다. 피조물인 우리가 어떻게 그분의 생각을 다 알 수 있겠는가? 결국 우리가 할 수 있는 것은 성경과 기도로 판단하고 그에 따라 행동해야 한다는 것이다.



여러 이야기들 중에서 내게 가장 깊은 인상을 끼친 내용은 예수님이 상점을 운영하는 밀턴 라이트의 입장이라면 어떻게 행하실까 하는 부분이었다. 지금 내 삶과 가장 밀접한 부분이기에 더욱 관심을 가지고 읽을 수밖에 없었다.



책에서 제시한 6가지 원칙은 사업을 시작했던 초기에 나 역시 가졌던 생각이지만 어느새 이런 원칙에서 벗어나 나만의 생각으로 사업을 하고 있는 내 모습을 보면서 예수님을 생각하지 않으면 결국 자기 자신만의 생각으로 모든 일을 해결하려는 인간의 나약함을 또 다시 깨닫게 되었다.



‘예수님이라면 어떻게 하실까’, 이 질문은 매일의 삶 속에서 자기 자신에게 던져야 할 가장 중요한 질문 중 하나이다. 이 질문으로 나를 포함해 모든 성도들이 삶에서 승리하기를 기대한다.

"예수님이라면 어떻게 하실까?"

이것은 미국 레이먼드 시에 있는 부유하고 아름다운 한 대형교회에서 있었던 이야기입니다. 레이먼드 시의 제일교회는 부유하고 세련된 사람들이 모여 사는 호화로운 동네에서도 제일로 꼽히는 교회입니다. 커다란 예배당 건물에, 좋은 옷을 입은 편안하고 유복해보이는 교인들로 가득 찬 곳, 현대적 감각에 맞추어 정성들여 편곡한 가장 비싼 음악을 부르는 최고의 성가대와 상징적인 십자가와 가시면류관으로 아름답게 장식된 곳, 그 성스러운 구역에 노숙자 몰골을 한 한 실직자가 들어서면서 교회는 겉잡을 수 없는 소용돌이 속으로 휩쓸려 들어갑니다. 열 달 전 일자리를 잃은 실직자는 일거리를 찾아 전국을 떠돌며 도움을 구하다가 레이먼드 시의 제일교회까지 흘러 들어왔고, 그곳에서 마지막 숨을 거둡니다. 이 사나이의 죽음에 큰 충격을 받은 맥스웰 목사는 주일예배를 드리는 강단에 서서 제일교회 성도들에게 한 가지 위험한 서약을 제안합니다.

"앞으로 1년 동안 무슨 일을 하든지 먼저 '예수님이라면 어떻게 하실까?' 하고 자기 자신에게 물어본 다음 그 해답에 따라서, 즉 예수님께서 하시리라고 짐작되는 그대로 행하겠다고 진지하고도 정직하게 서약하는 지원자들이 있기를 바랍니다. 그리하여 앞으로는 그 결과가 어떻게 되든 두려워하거나 염려하지 않고 예수님께서 하시리라고 생각되는 대로 모든 일을 실천해 나가자는 것입니다"(31). 다시 말해, 교인들 가운데 누구든 서약에 동의하는 지원자들은, 앞으로 1년 동안 일상생활에서 무슨 일을 하든지 먼저 '예수님이라면 어떻게 하실까?'라는 질문을 스스로 해 본 후에, 어떤 결과를 초래하든 상관하지 않고 자신의 양심적이고 솔직한 판단에 따라 그분께서 하시리라 여겨지는 대로 살아보자는 것입니다. 이 서약에 동의한 지원자들은 이제 각자 삶의 자리에서 "예수님이라면 어떻게 하실까?"를 질문하며, 예수님을 따른다는 말의 진정한 의미가 무엇인지 고민하기 시작합니다. <예수님이라면 어떻게 하실까>는 제일교회에서 시작된 이 "진지하고 험난한 교회 개혁 운동"이 전국으로 퍼져 나가는 과정을 보여줍니다.


"어디로 가시든지 저는 따르리이다"

물론, <예수님이라면 어떻게 하실까>는 소설입니다. 그러나 그리스도인이라 자처하는 모든 사람들에게 이것은 생생한 현실입니다. '그리스도인됨'의 자격을 묻는 매서운 질문입니다. 영생과 죽음의 갈림길 앞에 우리를 불러 세우는 결단의 순간입니다. 이 소설에 등장하는 인물들은 각자의 삶의 자리에서 예수님이라면 나의 천부적인 재능을 어떻게 사용할 것인가, 예수님이라면 나의 재산을 어떻게 사용할 것인가, 예수님이라면 지금 나의 지위, 나의 직업적 환경에서 어떻게 하실까를 묻기 시작합니다. 그리고 그들은 곧 자신의 삶과 신앙이 중요한 고비를 맞이했음을 깨닫습니다. 왜냐하면 이 질문은 자아실현을 목표로 삼는 세상에서 돌아서서 자기부인의 길로 갈 것을 요청하기 때문입니다. 쾌락이 아니라, 고난의 십자가를 질 것을 요청하고 있기 때문입니다.

<예수님이라면 어떻게 하실까>는 예수님을 따른다는 것이 얼마나 심각한 일인지를 생생하게 잘 보여줍니다. "예수님이라면 어떻게 하실까?"를 묻고, "양심적이고 솔직한 판단"에 따라 행동하는 일은 세상의 성공 이치를 거스리는 어리석음을 택하는 일이기 때입니다. 손해와 불안과 두려움을 감수해야 합니다. '현실적'으로 생각하라는 충고를 상대해야 합니다. 그리스도의 의무를 광신적으로 해석하지 말라는 반대와 저항도 이겨내야 합니다. '광신'이라는 가족들의 반대와 비난이 뼈아플 수도 있습니다.


주따르는 교회

예수께서 "나를 따르라"고 요청하실 때, 예수님이 뜻하신 바가 과연 무엇을 의미하는가? 나는 그리스도를 위하여 어떤 고난의 십자가를 짊어지고 있는가? <예수님이라면 어떻게 하실까>는 이런 질문을 스스로에게 던지게 만들어주는 책입니다. 이것은 새로운 제자도가 아니라, 처음부터 성경이 말하여 왔던 제자도입니다. 예수가 가신 길을 충실히 따르기보다, 우리가 가는 길에 예수님을 초청하기 원하는 현대 그리스도인들에게 이 질문은 "실현하기 어려운 이상이라고 단정"지어 버리고 폐기해버린 낡은 질문일지도 모릅니다.

그러나 이 책은 다시 한 번 우리에게 반응을 요청하고 있습니다. "오라, 와서 고난을 당하라"(219)라는 예수님의 부름에, 그분의 길을 무시하고 자신의 길을 가든지, 아니면 예수님과 함께 동행하든지 신중하게 양자택일을 해야 한다고 말입니다. "예수님께서는 영생과 사망의 길을 분명히 갈라놓고 계시는 분이다"(159).

우리가 예수님을 따르기로 결단할 때, 처할 수 있는 위험과 함께 <예수님이라면 어떻게 하실까>가 우리에게 보여주는 것이 또 하나 있습니다. 바로 예수님과 동행하는 그 길의 영광입니다. 그 의미와 가치는 이 땅에 속하지 않았습니다. 이 땅의 어떤 것으로도 그것과 견줄 수 없기 때문입니다.

한 번 읽은 책을 두 번 읽고, 한 번 본 영화를 두 번 보는 일이 (별로) 없는 제게 이 책은 두 번째 만남입니다. 안정되고 편안했던 대형교회 생활을 버리고, '주따르는교회'를 개척하며 이 책을 한 번 더 읽어보고 싶다는 강한 이끌림이 있었습니다. 책을 읽는 내내 스스로에게 '예수님을 따른다는 것의 참된 의미가 무엇인가'라는 질문을 던지며, 이것은 나에게 하는 설교라는 느낌에 사로잡혔습니다. 번역도 깔끔하서 매끄럽게 잘 읽힙니다. 제일교회가 온 힘을 다해 술집의 허가를 반대하는 대목은 벌써 이 책도 구시대적(?)이구나 하는 생각이 들게 할지도 모르겠습니다. 그러나 예수님을 따른다는 것이 무엇인지 진지하게 고민하는 그리스도인이라면 이 책이 왜 기독교고전으로 자리매김하게 되었는지 깊이 수긍할 수 있을 것입니다. 이 책은 우리 교회의 필독서입니다. 모든 교회의 필독서가 되어야 할 줄로 믿습니다!

그리스도인들은 두가지의 삶을 살고 있다.

하나는 육으로 사는 세상, 그리고 다른 하나는 영으로 사는 세상...

현재는 육신이 사는 세상에 살면서도 영적인 존재이기에 양쪽에 발을 담근 것마냥 살아가고 있다.

두 세상은 절대 같지 않아서 그리스도인 마음에서는 두 세상의 가치가 늘상 충돌하기 마련이다.

그리스도인은 세상보다 영생을 향한 기독교가치관을 따라 가고자 거스르고 애쓰는 사람이다. 그렇기 때문에 답은 정해져 있다.(비록 그 답대로 살지 못하더라도 말이다.)

바로 '예수님'을 따라 사는 삶이다.




이 책의 제목은 간결하면서도 강렬한 그 질문을 우리의 삶 속에 던진다.

그 질문은 우리 안에 예수님을 따라가겠다는 의지가 담겨져있고, 고뇌가 담겨져있다. 그리고 먼저 말한대로 질문형식이지만 우리에게 답은 이미 알려 주었다.




이 책은 레이먼드 시의 제일교회에서 한 무명 실직자가 죽고, 한 교회내에서 목사를 중심으로 '예수님이라면 어떻게 하실까?' 운동이 전개된 이야기다. 자신의 삶에서 '예수님이라면 어떻게 하실까?'라는 질문을 하고, 그 안에서 고민하며 찾아낸 결정으로 예수님의 인도하심 받는 삶을 살기로 결단하는 것이다. 이는 레이먼드 시를 비롯하여 나사렛 애비뉴 교회와 전미에 기독교적인 새로운 각성 운동이 된다.




이 과정을 통해 성령의 인도함을 받는 역사가 교회와 개인의 곳곳에서 일어난다. 예배와 기도를 통해 성령의 깊은 임재를 경험한 그들은 먼저 사치와 욕심, 쾌락, 그리스도로부터 오지 않은 안정감을 자연스럽게 여겨왔던 자신을 본다. 또한, 가난한 자와 소외된 자들을 돌아보았고, 불의하고 부패한 사회를 바라보았다. '예수님'의 눈으로 본 그들은 삶에서 하나하나 결단하고 행동하기에 이른다. '예수님이시라면?'이란 질문은 그들의 삶의 방향에 결정이 되고 방향지시등이 되었다. 자신의 우선순위를 '예수님'께 두었기 때문에, 그동안의 살아온 삶을 거스르는 것들이더라도 확고하게 주어진 그들의 길을 간다. 그들에게 성령이 말씀하셨기 때문에, 그들의 마음을 두드리시고, 강력하게 그들에게 임하셨기에 그들은 나아갈 수 있었다. 돌이킬 수 있었다.




하지만, 역시나 그들의 행동이 제 3자가 보기엔 그다지 정상적이지 못하다. 그러한 것이 세상의 환대를 받을리도 없고, 성공할리도 없다. 승리하는게 쉽지 않고, 핍박과 협박, 폭력에 시달리는 사태도 일어난다. 하지만 성령이 그들의 마음을 주장하고, 성령의 권능이 임하였기 때문에 담대하게 굳건히 나아간다. 또한 초대교회와 같이 그들의 소유를 기꺼이 나눈다. 함께 기도하며, 위로하며 격려한다.

이 책에서 가장 많이 등장하는 저 질문이 내 마음에도 다가왔다.

책의 인물들처럼 기꺼이 내 시간, 소유, 열정을 그 어떤 것이라도 내어놓을 수 있을까?

그러면서 내 소유, 내게 안정감을 주는 것들, 내가 의지하는 것들을 하나하나 떠올렸다.

또한, 내가 무엇보다 포기하기 싫은 것은 무엇일까? 생각해 보았다.

가족, 깨끗한 주거공간, 편리한 차, 향긋한 커피, 김치,,,, 바퀴벌레는 너무 싫고, 더러운 화장실도 싫고, 불쾌한 냄새는 더욱 싫고,,,,


이렇게 마음 속으로 저울질하는 내 모습을 보면서 나는 허울뿐이 그리스도인이 아니었을까? 하는 한탄이 절로 나온다.

오랫동안 신앙 생활했고, 어느 정도 지식은 깨우치고 있다. 기독교 문화는 내게 너무나도 익숙한 내 일부이다.

하지만 과연 나는 그리스도인인가?

나는 그의 발자취를 과연 따라갈 수 있을까? 아니 따라가고 있는걸까?


랙탱글의 음주지역, 문화는 영혼을 썩게 했고, 돌이킬 수 없는 수렁에 빠지게 했다. 거기서 구원을 하려고 애쓰는 자들이 있고, 그 지역으로부터 이익을 포기할 수 없는 권력자들이 있다. 그들은 쉽게 그들의 권리를 내어놓지 않는다. 그들의 이익을 위협하는 이들을 협박하고, 결국은 정치적으로 권한을 확보한다.

나는 정치와 법, 사회에 우리가 무지하고 무관심으로 충분히 부패하고 나락으로 떨어질 수 있다는 사실에 소름끼치도록 놀라움을 느꼈다. 기독교적으로는 영적인 싸움이다. 이 책은 주목한 것이기도 하다. 그리고 그 부분에 통감하며 우리 사회에 적용하여 정치와 법으로 오히려 더욱 부패의 길을 가는 현상황을 생각하며 안타깝고 경각심을 갖게 되었다.



이 책은 19세기 쓰여진 책으로 우리의 현재 상황에 비해서 다소 보수적이고 융통성없게 느껴지기도 한다.

레이첼이 가치있는 일을 하고 싶어서 오페라단을 포기하는 것을 보면서, '오페라단을 하면서 교회 봉사도 하고 하나님께 영광을 돌릴 수는 없나?' 하는 생각을 한다.

각종 자극적인 기사와 범죄사건을 심중히 다루는 기사를 제한하는 신문사의 노먼사장을 보면서 그 기준은 어디이며, 범죄사건을 다루는 것이 범죄예방을 위해 필요한 것이 아닌가 생각한다.

파워스 씨가 자신의 철도회사의 불의를 보고 결국은 사표를 쓰는 것을 보면서, 기존에 파워스씨가 직원들을 위한 공간을 꾸미며 그들을 복음에 가까워지게 하려고 했던 노력은 퇴사후에 어찌할 것인가? 그건 하나님이 주신 그의 사명은 아닌가? 하는 생각을 한다.




하지만, 어느 누군가의 말에서 '예수님이 이 땅에 계시던 시대보다 그리스도인이 갖추어야 할 자격 기준이 훨씬 낮아졌다는 말인가?'⁠라는 문장을 보면서 회유하려고 하고, 타협하려고 하며, 세상의 이득을 최대한 누려보고자 스멀스멀 올라오는 욕심을 지적받는 듯 해서 소스치게 놀랐다.

저들은 그들의 기도와 고뇌끝에 복음에 합당한 삶을 살고자 저와 같은 결정을 했다. 그러한 것에 섣불리 판단하는 것은 아닐까 조심스럽기도 했다.

또한, 워낙 책의 시대 정황상 어쩔 수 없다고는 하나 수시로 자연스레 등장하는 그리스도인으로써 상대적으로 우월히 여기고, 타락하고 저급한 사람을 더 죄인으로 취급하는 것 혹은 남녀차별적인 글들이 요즘에는 소화하기 쉽지 않을 수도 있겠다는 생각이 들었다.

어쨋든, 결론은 이것이다.

오늘날의 교회에 진정 필요한 것은

어떤 형태로든 예수님의 본보기를 따라 행하면서

기쁘게 희생과 고통을 감내하는 정신이라고

그는 확신하고 있었습니다. p210




예수님이라면? 을 늘 고민하며 그분의 길, 모습을 따라가야 한다.

그리고 더불어 중요한 것은 이를 위해서 예수 그리스도에 대해서 잘 알고 잇어야 한다는 것이다.


이 책은 그 길을 갔을 때 어떤 놀라운 기적이 일어나고 세상 모든 사람들이 각성하여 회개하는 판타스틱한 결론으로 전개하지 않는다. 다만 세상은 알지 못하는 성령의 운동하심을, 그리고 서서히 일어나고 있는 성령의 움직임에 주목한다. 또한, 고통 중에도 예수님을 의식하는 자들에게는 그것들을 감당할 만한 능력을 갖게 되며 또한 고통조차 기쁨으로 받을 수 있다는 점을 현실적으로 이야기 한다.

다소 무언가 세상의 관점으로 성공과 반전을 기대하는 이들에게는 유감스러운 일이지만, 세상과 하나님의 나라는 다르기 때문에 당연하다.


이 책을 기회로 '예수님이라면...?'이라는 운동을 통해 제자도를 점검해본다. 그리고 그분 앞에서 돌이키며 질문하고 고뇌함으로 진정한 예수님을 따르는 삶이 천국가는 날까지 지속되길 소망한다.

예수님이라면 어떻게 하실까


매 순간 이책의 제목과 같은 질문을 던지며 행동한다면 어떤 결과가 나올까 궁금합니다.
아무 생각없이 습관처럼 했던 결정들과는 전혀 다른 결과를 가져올 것 같습니다.

이 책의 제목을 보면서 유명한 책이지만 아직 읽어보지 못했다고 생각했었는데 2012년에 읽었더
군요. 나이가 들수록 점점 사라져가는 기억이라니...ㅠㅠ

분명히 읽었지만 전혀 모르는 새 책을 읽는 듯한 기분.

금요일 아침 헨리 맥스웰 목사는 주일 아침에 설교할 원고를 준비하고 있었습니다. 그 날 따라 원고를
쓰려고 할 때마다 자꾸 방해를 받게 되어 신경이 곤두서있던 참이었습니다.
그 때 울린 초인종 소리.
아내 마저 집을 비워서 직접 내려가 문을 열었더니 남루한 차림을 한 젊은이가 서 있었습니다.

그는 실직을 했는데 목사님께서 일거리를 얻을 수 있는 방법을 알려주지 않을까 싶어 찾아왔다고
말합니다.

헨리 맥스웰 목사는 그에게 아쉽지만 도움을 줄 수 없다고 말하고 문을 닫습니다.

그 주의 주일날, 은혜로운 레이첼 윈슬로우의 특송과 자신의 설교 또한 자신의 마음에 들어 매우
흡족했는데 설교가 끝나고 나서 교회에 다시 나타난 젊은 남자.

그는 예수님을 따른다는 것이 어떤 의미이냐고 질문을 던집니다. 교회에 다니지도 못하는 수많은
사람들이 가난에 지쳐 힘들어 할 때 큰 교회에 다니는 사람들은 안락한 생활을 한다면서 진정한
그리스도인의 의미를 묻고는 쓰러지고 맙니다.

헨리 맥스웰 목사는 집으로 그를 옮겨 치료를 받게 하지만 결국 그는 죽음에 이르게 됩니다.

그가 던진 물음에 대해 기도하던 헨리 맥스웰 목사는 교인들에게 앞으로 1년 동안 어떤 행동을
할 때마다 "예수님이라면 어떻게 하실까?"라는 질문을 던지고 예수님이 하실 행동들을 따라 할
교인들을 모집합니다.

"예수님이라면 어떻게 하실까?"란 질문을 던지고 그 대답이 비록 안 좋은 결과라고 할지라도
끝까지 지키는 것.
그들이 1년 동안 지켜야 할 일입니다.

데일리 뉴스의 사장인 에드워드 노먼은 일요판 신문을 없애고, 프로 권투 기사를 싣지 않기로
결정합니다. 그의 결정으로 많은 독자들이 신문을 끊어 경제적으로 위기에 처하지만 끝까지
밀고 나갑니다.

철도 공장의 소장인 알렉산더 파워스는 철도 공장에서 벌어지는 불의를 고발한 후에 회사를
그만두게 됩니다.

레이첼 윈슬로우는 미래가 보장되는 오페라 입단을 거절하고 낮은 곳에서 아름다운 목소리로
사람들에게 하나님을 알립니다.

레이첼의 친구인 버지니아는 데일리 뉴스가 재정적인 문제로 휴간되지 않도록 자신의 유산을
기부합니다.

이렇게 많은 사람들이 자신들의 서약을 지켜가면서 레이먼드 제일교회의 "예수님이라면 어떻게하실까?"에 대한 소문이 여러 곳에 전해지고 많은 교회에서 합류하게 됩니다.

책에서 이야기하고 있는 상황들이 지금의 기독교인들의 모습을 많이 떠올리게 해 진정으로 거듭난 그리스도인이란 무엇인가에 대해 고민하고 있는 분에게 이 책을 권해드리고 싶습니다.

"예수님이라면 어떻게 하실까"- 이것은 정말 모든 그리스도인들이 일상사에서 항상 물어야할 질문이다. 동시에 그것은 자극적이고 충격적이기도 하다. 나태하고 무감각한 신자들에게 이 말은 큰 도전을 준다.

<예수님이라면 어떻게 하실까>는 오랫 동안 많은 크리스천들에게 큰 도전이 되어준 책이 분명하다. 그러나 과연 제목이 추구하는 실천하는 신앙이 성도들의 삶에 얼마나 큰 변화를 몰고왔을까 반성해보지 않을 수 없다. 지금도 소설 속 주인공들의 부던한 신앙의 고민, 결단, 도전이 필요한 시대인 것을...

미국의 찰스 쉘던 목사는 실직한 인쇄공으로 가장하여 여러 사람들을 만나는 와중에 크리스천들의 무관심과 차별에 큰 충격을 받게 되어 이 책을 쓰게 되었다고 한다. 실제로 소설의 또한 무명의 실직 인쇄공의 출현으로 시작된다.

레이먼드 제일교회, 왠지 우리나라의 몇몇 대형교회 같은 교회가 아닐까.
"제일교회는 레이먼드 시에서 첫째로 꼽히는 교회였다. 더구나 최고의 성가대를 가지고 있었고, 교인들 또한 레이먼드 시에 사는 지도급 인사들, 재계의 대표들, 또는 훌륭한 지성인들로 구성되어 있었다. 그는 이번 여름의 3개월 휴가 동안 해외에 다녀올 예정이었고 유복한 생활을 누리고 있었으며, 이 도시에서 제일가는 교회의 목사로서 확고한 지위와 영향력을 가지고 있었다."

헨리 맥스웰 목사가 시무하는 이 교회에 큰 충격의 사건이 일어난다. 어느 실직한 인쇄공이 교회와 목사에게 던진 마지막 질문. 비록 실직한 그와 그의 가정에 그리고 그와 같은 처지에 있는 많은 이들을 단순히 금전적으로, 실질적으로 도움을 주지 않았다는 이유에서 시작된 불만이 아니었다. 이름 없는 한 사나이가 진실하게, 간곡하게 던진 이 질문으로 인하여 교회와 성도들의 신앙에 완전히 새로운 장이 열리게 될줄 아무도 예상치 못하는 가운데, 인쇄공은 안타까운 죽음을 맞이한다.

"예수님이라면 어떻게 하실까요?" 이 명제를 남긴 채.








헨리 맥스웰 목사, 레이먼드 데일리 뉴스의 사장 에드워드 노먼, 철도 공장 소장인 알렉산더 파워스, 링컨 대학의 총장인 도널드 마쉬, 사업가 밀턴 라이트, 외과 박사 웨스트, 소설가 자스퍼 체이스, 막대한 유산을 물려받은 버지니아 페이지, 그리고 레이첼 윈슬로우 양은 자신들의 삶의 자리에서 '예수님이라면 어떻게 하실까?'를 끊임없이 자문하는 일에 스스로 동참한다.
모두에게 쉬운 일이 아니었고, 소설은 등장 인물이 이 질문 앞에서 겪는 내적 어려움과 주변 인물들과의 갈등을 보여준다.

"우리 모두가 당신의 생각에 공감하고 있습니다. 그러나 지난 일주일 동안 '예수님이라면 어떻게 하실까?'라는 질문에 대해 정확한 대답을 얻지 못해서 곤혼스러운 적이 여러 번 있었습니다. 언제든지 대답하기 쉬운 질문은 결코 아니더군요.....

그들 대부분의 의견은 그리스도의 정신과 행적을 일상 생활에 그대로 적용시킨다는 것이 대단히 심각하고 어려운 일이라는 점이었다. 그렇게 하려면 그리스도에 대한 올바른 이해와 그분의 행동 동기를 제대로 파악할 수 있는 통찰력이 우선 요구되는데 대부분의 사람들이 아직 그런 요건을 갖추지 못한 상태였다."

마지막으로 인쇄공의 죽음을 모른채 하지 않고, 교회와 신앙의 각성의 기회로 삼았던 헨리 목사가 종이에 써내려 간 마음의 다짐을 나의 마음에 다시 새겨본다.

<예수님이 이 교회에서 실천하시리라 여겨지는 사항들>
1. 단순하고 평범하게 살아가실 것이다. 즉 지나친 사치나 과도한 금욕은 하지 않는다.
2. 교회에 나오는 위선자들에게 대담한 마음으로 설교할 것이다. 그들의 사회적 지위나 재산 따위에는 관심을 두지 않으실 것이다.
3. 이 교회의 대부분을 구성하는 부유한 사람들, 교육받은 사람들, 세련된 사람들뿐만 아니라 가난하고 보잘것없는 서민들에게도 주님의 사랑과 동정을 고루 베풀 것이다.
4. 자기 부정과 희생에 동참하는 개인적인 방법으로 인류의 대의에 헌신하실 것이다.
5. 레이먼드의 술과 타락된 생활에 반박하실 것이다.
6. 렉탱글의 타락과 죄악에 물든 사람들에게도 친구가 되실 것이다.
7. 올해의 유럽 여행을 포기할 것이다.(나는 이미 두 번이나 해외 여행을 다녀왔으므로 휴식을 위해서 특별히 여행을 할 필요는 없다. 나는 건강하니까 휴식 없이도 여전히 건강하고 기쁜 마음으로 일할 수 있다. 휴가 비용을 나보다 더 휴식이 필요한 사람들을 위해 쓰겠다. 아마 이 도시에는 그런 사람들이 무척 많을 것이다.)

매 순간 '예수님이라면 어떻게 하실까?'를 먼저 생각해보고 어떤 일들을 행한다는 것은 결코 쉬운 일이 아니다. 하지만 그럼에도 불구하고 그렇게 살아가려고 애쓰는 그리스도인 한 명 한 명을 통해 교회와 세상은 얼마나 더 주님 보시기에 아름답게 변해갈까? 우리가 살아가는 세상 속에서 어떻게 해동하는 것이 예수님을 따르는 길일지 명확하지 않을 때가 많지만 책에서 말해주는 '예수님의 마음', '예수님의 정신', '예수님의 말씀'을 그 초석에 둔다면 우리도 조금씩 그렇게 살아갈 수 있을 것이다. 많은 그리스들에게 도전이 되는 필독서가 되길 바램해 본다.

맥스웰 목사님은, 가난 때문에 아내와 하나밖에 없는 자식마저 잃고 일자리도 없이 좌절과 슬픔에 잠긴 인쇄공을 만나게 된다. 이것이 맥스웰 목사님에게는 그리스도인이 실재 생활에서 믿음과 사랑으로 산다는 것이 과연 무엇인지를 물을 수밖에 없는 계기가 된다. 그 후 그 인쇄공이 요절하는 비극적인 사건 앞에서 맥스웰 목사님은, "예수님이라면 어떻게 하실까?"란 질문을 던지면서 삶의 매 순간을 책임지기로 각오한다. 다음 주일 교인들에게 같은 질문으로 도전을 준다. 이에 감동된 교인 수십 명이 앞으로 1년간 그렇게 살기로 작정한다. 이런 실제적인 헌신의 삶이, 연못에 던져진 조약돌 한 알이 파문을 일으키듯 사랑의 파문을 일으킨다는 내용이 이 책의 요지다.

저자 쉘돈이 이 책 초판을 발행한 것은 1896년이었다. 이 책은 발행된 이후 판을 거듭하면서 수백만부가 팔린 베스트셀러다. 이 책이 이렇게 많이 팔리게 된 것은 이 책의 내용 자체 때문이기도 하지만, 사상적으로 볼 때 기독교가 온갖 문제들로 앓고 있는 사회에 무엇인가 구체적인 말과 행동을 보여야 한다는 기독교 사회 윤리가 대중 소설의 옷을 입고 선을 보인 때문이기도 하다.

예수를 믿는 다는 것은 모름지기 구체적인 삶을 요구한다. 삶이 없는 믿음은 야고보서에 의하면 "송장 믿음"이다. 여기서 삶이라함은 개인의 영혼의 삶만이 아니라 육신의 삶도 포함하며, 개개인의 삶만이 아니라 더불어 사는 삶도 포함한다. 그러나 오늘날 우리 그리스도인의 삶이 영혼만을 강조하는 '유령적'삶이나, 영혼을 등한시하고 인간의 육신적인 것, 세상적인 것을 추구하는 삶으로 타락화 되어가는 경향이 있다. 또한 더불어 사는 세상에서 철저하게 타락화 되어가는 경향이 있다. 또한 더불어 사는 세상에서 철저하게 '나 하나'만을 고집하고 개인 구원만을 주장하는 삶과, 어떤 집단이나 사회 구원을 위해서 '나를 잃어 버리는' 개인상실의 삶으로 극단화되기도 한다.

결국 이러한 믿음은 생명이 없는 죽은 믿음이며, 구체적 삶의 열매가 없는 쭉정이 믿음인 것이다.

기독교의 추락 속에 손에 잡은 책 한 권

 

기독교의 위상이 날로 추락하고 있다. 누굴 탓하기 이전에 그리스도인들이 경각심을 갖고 거듭남의 각오로 임하지 않으면 교계에 희망이 없다. 이럴 즈음에 내가 이 책을 손에 잡은 것은 크나큰 축복이다. 사회복음에 대한 글을 쓰기 위해 자료를 찾던 중이었다. 미국의 월터 라우센부시(Walter Rauschenbush)를 피해갈 수 없어 그에 대한 글을 읽었다. 라우센부시가 영향 받은 사람 중 찰스 M. 쉘던(Charles M. Sheldon)이 있다는 것을 알았다.

 

쉘던은 미국의 회중교회(Congregational Church) 목사이자 저술가로 어떻게 하면 대중에게 복음을 효과적으로 전할 수 있을까를 늘 생각했다. 그 방법 중 하나가 소설을 쓰는 것이었다. <예수라면 어떻게 할 것인가>(조항래 역, 도서출판 예찬사, *이 책 제목이 눈에 거슬린다. 아무리 다중을 대상으로 하는 소설책이라고 하지만 예수님을 인성적 측면만 생각하고 정한 제목 같기 때문이다. 그래서 이 뒤로는 '예수님이라면 어떻게 하실까'로 표기하겠다. 실제로 10 종이 넘는 한국어 번역본 중 대부분이 이렇게 책 제목을 달았다)는 소설에 속하는 글이다. 원 제목은 In His Steps이고 부제(副題)가 'What Would Jesus Do?'이다. 그러니까 부제를 한글 역(譯)의 책명으로 삼은 것이다. '주님의 발자취를 따라'보다는 '예수님이라면 어떻게 하실까'가 더 설득력 있는 제목이라 생각했을 법하다.

책의 발단 부분에 나오지만 주인공 헨리 맥스웰(Henry Maxwell) 목사가 주일 예배 때 

베드로전서 2장 21절을 본문으로 '주의 발자취를 따라서'란 제목으로 설교를 한다(*벧전 2:21 "이를 위하여 너희가 부르심을 입었으니 그리스도도 너희를 위하여 고난을 받으사 너희에게 본을 끼쳐 그 자취를 따라오게 하셨느니라" "It was to this that God called you, for christ himself suffered for you and left you an example, so that you would follow in his steps."). 이 본문이 쉘던의 소설 In His Steps에서 시종일관(始終一貫) 긴장 속에 이야기를 이끌어가는 주제이기도 하다. 사회의 가치 기준이 혼란스럽고 윤리 도덕이 추락할수록 사람들은 절대적인 잣대를 요구한다. '예수님이라면 어떻게 하실까'라는 질문은 예수님처럼 살고 싶다는 설의법적 표현이다. 19세기 말에서 20세기 초에 미국에서 성행했던 WWSD(What Would Jesus Do?) 물결은 이것을 잘 말해 주고 있다.

 

올바른 신앙인으로 바로 서기 위해

 

오늘날도 이 소설을 쓸 때와 비슷한 가치 혼란의 시대이다. 절대 진리가 발붙일 여지가 없고 나에게 유익이 되는 것이 곧 진리라는 전도(顚倒)된 가치관이 횡행하고 있는 사회아다. 따라서 찰스 쉘던의 소설 <예수님이라면 어떻게 하실까>가 독자들에게 강하게 어필할 수밖에 없는 시절이다. 그리스도인조차 예수 그리스도의 십자가 고난보다는 안락하고 부담 없는 세속적 신앙생활을 원하는 추세이고, 실제 많은 사람들이 그쪽을 행해 달려가고 있다. 예수 그리스도의 아가페 사랑은 어디론지 사라지고 그리스도가 한낱 자기 필요에 의해 달았다가 떼어내는 장식물로 전락하고 말았다면 지나친 표현일까.

 

이 소설은 신앙생활을 소재로 하고 있다. 찰스 쉘던의 <예수님이라면 어떻게 하실까>는 체코의 헨리크 시엔크비치(Henryk Adam Alexander Pius Sienkiewicz)가 쓴 Quo Vadis와 함께 오늘날까지 읽히고 있는 스테디셀러가 된다. 그만큼 많은 사람들에게 영향을 끼친 책이라고 보아도 좋다. 또 예수님을 본받는 삶을 강조하는 책으로는 디트리히 본회퍼(Dietrich Bonhoeffer)의 The Cost of Discipleship('나를 따르라'는 제목으로 출판)과 함께 이 책은 수많은 독자들에게 깊은 영향을 끼쳐왔다. 어떤 비평가는 본회퍼의 책은 식자층에게 그리고 쉘던의 이 소설은 다중(多衆)의 일반 그리스도인들에게 큰 도전을 주었다고 평가했다.

 

In His Steps의 시대 배경은 19세기 중반이다. 영국에서 일어난 산업혁명의 여파가 미국에도 몰아닥쳐 부(富)가 한쪽으로 급격히 쏠리고 있었다. 빈곤층이 양산되어 끼니와 잠자리를 걱정해야만 했다. 공간적 배경은 레이몬드(Raymond )이다. 황석영의 '삼포가는 길'의 삼포(三浦)처럼, 김승옥의 '무진기행'의 공간적 무대 무진(霧津)처럼 가상의 도시이다. 그곳을 중심으로 예수님 닮기(Imitation) 운동이 사람들을 통해 전개된다.

 

상류층 신앙인들의 기득권 내려놓기

 

이 책은 전부 31개의 장(章)으로 구성되어 있다. 각 장마다 다양한 캐릭터의 사람들이 등장해 이야기를 끌어가고 있는데 그 중에서도 중심 주인공이라고 할 만한 사람들을 열거하면 다음과 같다. 레이몬드 제일교회 담임 헨리 맥스웰 목사, 건전한 기독교 언론을 추구하는 레이몬드 데일리 뉴스(Raymond Daily News) 사장 에드워드 노만(Edward Norman), 기업의 부정을 고발하며 개혁하고 한 철도회사 간부 알렉산더 파워즈(Alexander Powers), 미성(美聲)의 성악가이며 자신의 재능으로 빈민 선교 집회 찬양 사역에 헌신하는 레이첼 윈슬로우(Rachel Winslow), 많은 재산의 상속녀이며 그 재산을 사회복지 사업에 쏟아 붓는 버지니아 페이지(Virginia Page), 링컨 대학 학장이며 이후 레이몬드 시의 금주운동을 주도하는 도날드 매쉬(Donald Mash).

 

면면을 살펴 볼 때 사회의 상류층 사람들임을 쉽게 알 수 있다. 세상이 어떻게 돌아가든 호의호식(好衣好食)하며 살아갈 수 있는 부류의 사람들이다. 그러나 이들에게 큰 충격을 주는 사건이 발생한다. 그것도 거룩한 주일 날, 이들이 출석하는 경건해야 할 예배당에서…. 그 이름은 잭 매닝(Jack Manning), 이 사람은 인쇄공이었는데 공장 자동화의 물결이 밀려오는 과정에서 실직을 당한 노동자이다. 즉 자동식자기(自動植字機, linotype)의 도입으로 사람의 손이 더 이상 필요 없게 되어 일자리를 잃고 말았다. 구직을 위해 백방으로 알아보았지만 허사였다. 그 사이 아내는 숨을 거두었고(영양실조에 의해였을 것) 아이는 동료 인쇄공의 집에 위탁해 놓고 있었다.

 

그 실직자가 예배 시간에 강대상 쪽으로 나와서 던진 말은 지금까지 평온하게 신앙생활을 해 오던 제일교회 성도들의 마음을 휘저어 놓고 말았다. 마치 바리새인들을 나무라던 예수님 같았다고나 할까. 그의 말을 직접 들어보자

 

"아까 여러분은 '주와 함께 가려네'라고 찬송을 부르셨는데 과연 그 뜻이 무엇일까요? 예수의 행적은, 제가 알고 있는 바로는 스스로 고난을 당하고 자신을 부정하면서 길 잃은 자와 고통 받는 자를 구원하려고 노력한 것이었는데 여러분도 그렇게 생각하는지요? 여러분은 '예수님의 발자취를 따른다'는 것을 어떻게 해석합니까? … 제 아내가 뉴욕 시의 한 셋방에서 마지막 숨을 몰아쉬면서 어린 딸을 함께 데려가게 해 달라고 하나님께 빌다가 숨을 거두었습니다. … 여러분, 예수님을 따른다는 것이 무슨 뜻일까요?"(21쪽).

 

산업혁명의 여파 속에 실직한 인쇄공의 죽음

 

믿는 자의 갈등은 여기서부터 시작되는 것이다. '예수님의 발자취를 따른다'(Following In His Steps)는 것은 무슨 뜻일까? '예수라면 어떻게 할 것인가?'(What Would Jesus Do?)는 앞의 말을 반복 강조한 것이다. 이런 말을 남기고 숨을 거둔 인쇄공 실직자의 장례를 치르고 맥스웰 목사는 획기적인 선언을 한다. 1년간 온전히 예수님의 발자취를 따르는 삶을 살아가기로. 교인들의 호응도 커 약 50 여 명이 이 운동에 동참해서 사회적 약자를 보듬고 사회의 부족한 부분을 채우는 일에 헌신하기로 서약한다. 위에 예거한 사람들이 그 운동의 주축들이다.

 

데일리 뉴스 사장 에드워드 노만은 주일에도 발행하던 신문을 쉬기로 하고 술과 담배 광고를 금지하며 흥미 본위의 기사를 게재하지 않기로 결정한다. 철도회사 간부인 알렉산더 파워즈는 자기 회사가 연방정부의 주간통상법(州間通商法)을 조직적으로 어기는 것을 고발함으로써 해직된다. 뛰어난 음성으로 고액의 연봉 제의를 뿌리친 레이첼 윈슬로우는 렉탱글 빈민 마을에 들어가 찬양으로 봉사한다. 고액 재산의 상속녀인 버지니아 페이지는 자신의 재산을 기독교 사회복지 사업에 쾌척했을 뿐만 아니라 그리스도 정신으로 신문을 발행해 적자 경영에 빠진 데일리 뉴스에 거금을 지원한다. 지금까지 대학 교수로 자족하던 도날드 매쉬 학장도 상아탑을 벗어나 지역의 금주 운동에 뛰어 들어 지도력을 발휘한다. 이 사람들이 내걸고 실천한 슬로건은 '예수님이라면 어떻게 하실까?'였다.

 

소설은 픽션(fiction)의 영역에 속한다. 즉 허구(虛構)이다. 그러나 있을 법한 허구라는 사실이 중요하다. 찰스 M. 쉘던의 In His Step이 미국뿐 아니라 전 세계적으로 성경 다음 많이 팔린 책으로 기록(30개 언어로 3천만 부 이상이 판매된 것으로 추산)되고 있으면서도 신학자들과 문학평론가들이 도외시한 것은 하나님의 말씀은 진리이고 진리는 허구와 공존할 수 없다는 인식이 작용하지 않았나 싶다. 하지만 작가 찰스 쉘던은 복음을 보다 쉽게 대중에게 전달하기 위해 소설의 방식을 택했다는 점을 분명히 했다. 그렇다면 이 소설은 재평가의 과정을 밟을 필요가 있다. 현실 안주형 그리스도인들이 다수를 점하고 있는 교계 상황을 직시할 때 이런 형식의 글로 사람들을 예수 앞에 바로 세울 수 있다면 비판이 아니라 쌍수를 들어 환영할 일이 될 것이다.

 

재조명되어야 할 찰스 M. 쉘던의 소설들

 

쉘던의 In His Steps는 17세기 존 번연(John Bunyan)이 쓴 <천로역정(Pilgrim Progress)>과도 비교된다. 존 번연도 침례교 목사이자 작가였다. <천로역정>은 우화소설로 역대 신앙서적 중 성경 다음으로 많이 읽혀졌다는 점도 그렇다. 찰스 쉘던은 미국 회중교회 목사였고, 교회의 대 사회적 역할을 강조했다. 그는 이 소설 외에도 이것의 속편에 해당하는 Jesus is Here 등 여러 권의 소설을 출판했다. 모두 교회와 사회와의 관계 속에서 예수 그리스도적 삶을 강조한 것들이다. 쉘던은 In His Steps를 쓰기 전 직접 실직한 인쇄공으로 가장하여 다수의 그리스도인들을 만났다고 한다. 그 결과는 어땠을까. 실망을 금치 못했다. 그리스도인들로부터 말과 행동과 믿음의 불일치를 보았기 때문이다.

 

다시 우리의 현실을 돌아보자. 신자유주의의 풍랑 속에 세상적 윤리와 질서가 교회에 그대로 이식되어 예수님이 설 자리가 점점 좁아지고 있다. 맘몬주의(Mammonism), 승자독식주의, 인본주의 등이 주님의 자리를 대신하려 하고 있다. 기독교인의 윤리 의식조차도 희미해져 무딜 대로 무디어진 상태다. 이럴 때, 그리스도인 모두가 생각과 말과 행동에서, '과연 예수님이라면 어떻게 하셨을까?'라고 묻는다면 우리의 신앙이 다시 살아날 수 있지 않을까. 미국의 대표적인 복음주의 목회자이자 저술가인 에이든 윌슨 토저(Aiden Wilson Tozer)는 현대의 그리스도인을 회색 지대의 그리스도인이라고 말한 적이 있다. 예수님처럼 사는 것도 아니고 그렇다고 세상 사람처럼 사는 것도 아닌 회색지대에서 위험한 줄타기를 하고 있다는 것이다. 그리스도인을 위한 경고의 말이다.

 

찰스 M. 쉘던은 이 소설의 대미를 이 땅에 이루어질 이상적 사회 건설과 함께 재림하시는 예수님의 환상을 바라보는 것으로 마무리한다. 그동안 등장했던 인물들을 총 출동시켜 맥스웰 목사가 바라고 등장인물들이 생각하고 독자들이 원하는 결말을 이끌어낸다. 해피 엔딩이다. 교회의 문간마다 성도들의 가슴마다 '예수님이라면 어떻게 하실까?'란 표어가 붙어 있는 것 같다. 이 땅에 천년왕국의 도래를 꿈꾸는 것으로 끝을 맺고 있다. 한 마디 덧붙일 것, '고통을 다른 이에게 대신 받게 하려는 기독교는 참된 기독교가 아닙니다. 진짜 기독교인이라면 사업가든 시민이든 간에 반드시 예수님에게로 가는 희생의 행로를 따라 그 분의 발자취를 밟아가야 할 것입니다. 맥스웰 목사가 마지막 설교에서 강조한 말이다. 오늘날 우리에게 시사하는 바가 적지 않으리라.

 

자본주의의 폐악 속에서 벗어나야 할 그리스도인

 

얼마간의 헌금과 몇 시간의 봉사 활동으로 그리스도인의 의무를 다 했다고 생각하는 사람들이 많다. 그것으로 주님께서 걸어가신 고난의 길을 대신할 수는 없는 일이다. 기득권을 내 놓고 가진 것을 솔선해서 나누어야 한다. 초대교회처럼 "믿는 사람이 다 함께 있어 모든 물건을 서로 통용하고 또 재산과 소유를 팔아 각 사람의 필요를 따라 나눠주고 날마다 마음을 같이 하여 성전에 모이기를 힘쓰는"(행 2:44-46) 교회로 돌아가야 한다. 이러한 초대 교회 정신이 우리 기독교가 다시 살아나는 길이다. 쉘던이 이 소설에서 강조한 것도 바로 이것이다. 상류층 사람들이 자기 것을 빈민들에게 나눠주고 함께 하라는 것이다. 목회자도 예외일 수 없다. 이 소설의 에드워드 감독(Bishop Edward)과 나사렛 에비뉴 교회의 칼빈 브루스(Calvin Bruce) 목사처럼 자신들이 온갖 정성을 다해 사역한 교회를 내려놓고 주님이 걸어가신 고통의 길을 기꺼이 기쁨으로 감당할 수 있어야 한다. 쉬운 일일까. 우리와 같은 연고주의가 뿌리 깊은 교계의 상황에서.

 

교계가 위기를 향해 치닫고 있다는 우려의 목소리가 높다. 돌파구를 찾아야 한다. 결국 우리 그리스도인들에게 달려 있다. 세속적 삶에 신앙을 편승시켜 나만을 위한 길을 갈 것인가 아니면 이 소설에서 시종 주창하고 있듯이 거룩한 주님의 발자취를 따라 갈 것인가의 갈림길에서 우리가 선택할 일만 남았다. 교계의 부익부 빈익빈 현상은 서구 기독교의 과거를 그대로 닮아가는 모습이다. 지금 유럽의 기독교는 어떤 상태인가. 외형만 덩그러니 남고 텅텅 빈 예배당, 생각만 해도 아찔하다. 그런 전철을 밟지 않으려면 지금 이 시간부터 '예수님이라면 어떻게 하실까?'란 물음 앞에 모두가 무릎을 꿇어야 한다. 그래서 WWJD 운동이 이 땅에 일어나기를 간절히 바란다. 그렇게 하는데 쉘던의 이 소설이 큰 도전이 될 것이다. 일독을 권할 수밖에 없는 이유가 여기에 있다. In His Steps의 마지막 '단어'로 글을 맺는다. '아멘!'

No wonder this book is so widely read. Besides the spiritual content, the writing is captivating. It’s the older style of the 1800s, which I enjoy, and still highly readable today.

The author was full of the Holy Spirit, that’s obvious. Impossible to read without being deeply affected and inspired to become a more committed disciple and seek to bring about change within our spheres of influence.

Written in 1896, this fictional work is based on Congregational minister's, Charles Sheldon's weekly church discussion groups, where one of the 31 chapters was read each week and then discussed. The focus was participants to ask themselves, "What would Jesus Do?" and then explore what changes that decision might require and then how to choose the best way to follow that self-imposed guidance.

When these chapters were published in serialized form and then as a completed novel, the copyright was mishandled, putting it into the public domain with many publishers creating their own versions. Millions of copies were sold or distributed, so in 1935, the author published his own "authorized" version that added short supplemental material at the end of each chapter, summarizing the chapter's final implications. This book version does not include these additional comments, although the accompanying Audible narration does. I enjoyed comparing the two different endings, noting how the author's added comments changed the ambiguity of the original chapter ending to one with more defined somewhat preachy content. As a reader, I found the original text more interesting because I was included in the experience of deciding how I might have reacted. Unfortunately for me, the supplemental endings took away a personal interpretation by narrowing the story with a more moralizing tone. I preferred the original uncertain chapter endings.

More recent versions available have revised wording and dated elements, with several including introductory comments with many consolidating the original 31 chapters to 24, while some editions added to, revised, or deleted minor sections, without substantially changing the story.

This specific version I found the most compelling of the many I've read.

Although the story has a timeless value for Christian adherents or scholars, the pre-prohabition anti-alcohol beverage movements of the late 1800s and early 1900s are most obvious to conditions of that time. Additionally, the author's well-known Christian Socialism of collectivism beliefs are clearly evident in storyline advocacy.

This work has value as a creative and nostalgic work about first century Christianity as perceived in the early 20th century. It also suggests how institutionalizing personal religious beliefs and interpretations might be misunderstood and misapplied when taken to unsustainable limits.

Although the book is worthy of discussion and review by interested groups of faith or study, the novel's greatest value is likely best appreciated by individuals of faith. To the nonreligious, the book will likely be seen as naive, unrealistic, and outdated. However, to sincere Christians, the book's simple charm and fictional examples of devotion will be seen as both inspiring and compelling.

The book's primary message challenges "comfortable Christian" whose complacent faith does not translate into meaningful and effective Christian benevolence outside small family or congregational circles. As such, the author's intentions are clearly directed to the hypocrisy in all of us. The book is meant to be provocative and unsettling to readers. For some, it will be annoying, for many a passing read, for others a potentially life changing experience.

I first read this book over 50 years ago and have re-read it several times. Although fiction, it deals with the very real possibilities of what can happen when Christians decide to live as Jesus wants us to. Do nothing without first asking, what would Jesus do? And after getting an answer, do exactly that regardless of the consequences or outcome. Not feasible in today's world? Many in the book felt that way too but it didn't stop the ones who pledged to do just that for one year. I challenge you to read this book and decide for yourself.

I was anxious from the moment I started reading the book wondering how a novel written from a Christian perspective would be like - I was not disappointed. Although, the people in the book are fictitious the message is practical all the way.

It is very easy to get bogged down by life's challenges and lose sight of the bigger picture of the one who died that we might be set free. As practitioners in the marketplace, we must not lose sight of His standard and resign to standards that invite us to look the other way when others are in a difficult place.

Indeed, faith through actions is not about how well we articulate the mission and vision of the organizations we serve. It is about how well we live each day with integrity knowing that no action is small in the eyes of the vision bearer.

It is about putting the light out there and letting the world know through action and deed that we subscribe to a higher standard. It is about knowing that it will be difficult to live this standard but living it anyway. As Henry Ford put it " You have got to keep doing and going"

Ours is "a duty to pursue a higher calling of business as an instrument of healing and redemption that looks beyond the simplistic measures of profit to a more holistic view of business" Bauber & Borchers (2020).

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve the way they view life and business in general - a great read and will be for centuries to come!

Really enjoyed reading this book.

Lovely little novel about a group of people who attend church on Sunday being challenged to think about whether or not their own day to day life is being lived according to Jesus’ teachings in all areas of their lives. There is no ‘one size fits all’ answer and each character has to make decisions based on the unique circumstances of their lives.

This book started the ‘What would Jesus do?’ movement, which has become rather cliché.

The book brings out the true essence of that question.

The outcomes are different in each character’s life and can’t help but make the reader think about their own life and the impact he or she is making in the world around them

A very gentle read but quite profound.

Had read this many years ago but re-reading still made an impact today. A novel set in the last century with a theme of choosing to do what Jesus would do,this challenged to move from comfortable Christianity to living by the standards of Christ in relation to others in terms of integrity,compassion, motivation and sacrifice. Although the era has altered the challenges presented to deny oneself and take up the cross are still the same.The novel follows the lives of several who took up the challenge and the impact that their lives made upon the communities around them.

Rarely have I come across a book that I am so torn over as to how to rate it. Usually a book will be obviously good or bad, making the ultimate conclusion in rating it a fairly easy process. While a good book may have some detractors, overall the good outweighs the bad, with the reverse also being true of bad books. This book was given to me by a friend, and I think I told her I would read it. Otherwise, it probably would not have taken long for me to put it down. I found it badly written, and I disagree with its central message, namely that the Christian church would be revolutionized if it's members each made an honest pledge to do as Jesus would do. (I may be way off here, but I bet the WWJD movement started with this book.) The problem with this idea is that there is a real danger of subjectivism in doing what Jesus would do in any given situation. What ends up happening is people do what they THINK Jesus would do. If I remember correctly, at least one character says, "I don't think Jesus would do that." For instance, one of the things some of Sheldon's characters concentrate on is the "liquor interests." Besides the fact that alcohol per se is not sinful, the author is concentrating on the symptom, not the disease, which primarily lies within the alcoholic, not the industry. To be fair, the characters do get other things right, like ministering to the poor and outcasts.

The church doesn't need a call to make pledges. If we are Christians, we are already pledged to follow in the steps of Jesus. We need the truth of the gospel to be preached and taught in churches. Then Christians can ask themselves, "Based on what the Bible teaches, what would Jesus have me do?" (less)

Yes, this book is where that phrase comes from. This book is a classic, and the Kindle version is available for free.

8/10/19: I read In His Steps as a teen. My father was an investor in a bargain bookstore, and I enjoyed purchasing books there. I delighted in the section of Christian fiction, which jived really well with my Grace Livingston Hill fixation. I found several pretty glossy hardcover GLH books. With that same glossy appearance was the book In His Steps, so I no doubt thought it was another Christian romance. It wasn't, but I thoroughly enjoyed the book regardless.

So here I am enjoying it again because my husband bought an Audible copy. Near the beginning, the congregation of a local church is asked what it means to follow the steps of Jesus. The pastor poses a challenge to anyone in his church willing to take it on: don't take any action until first considering what Jesus would do... and then do it. No matter what.

This is quite a challenge. What if God wants you to do more than (or differently than) you want to? The answer, of course, is to do it anyway. He's God, after all. But to commit to ALWAYS obeying Him takes guts.

8/11/19: If a person has a to-do or not-to-do decision to make, determining what Jesus would do is a challenge if both possible decisions are not sins. In that type of situation, one must consider Christ's character as revealed in the stories recounted in the gospels.

8/13/19: The story lines are entertaining enough to get me to keep reading, but is obviously a a moral tale. But I'm okay with that! I avoid nonfiction because I don't want to relax with "nothing but the facts." So if I can be encouraged and/or educated while reading a fiction story, all the better. In fact, my favorite books are Christian historical romances, which enrich me with a bit of history and a bit of Biblical food for thought.

Modern readers might not relate very well to some of choices the characters make based on their perception of what Jesus would do in their shoes. However, this was published in the late 1800s, so if the reader can keep this in mind, it will serve him well. Again, this didn't bother me, because in general, I'm pretty conservative.

8/16/19: I'm at chapter 27 out of 31 chapters. A couple of chapters ago, I thought the book was going to end, but instead it seemed to reboot in a new location with new people. Unless I missed something, (which is possible due to my deafness) I don't think the author transitioned very well. It's a minor complaint, though.

8/18/19: I finished this yesterday, and am really glad I re-read this classic. I'd like to try another by this author, perhaps Born to Serve.

Morally, with empathy, with forgiveness, with Love. Then, when you make the effort, you are a Christian. My favorite verse for several months now has been 1 John 2:6: "Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did." Charles Sheldon shows in In His Steps what serious attempts to constantly "walk as Jesus did" might look like in real life. It was inspiring to read about what happened in the lives of the characters who agreed to do nothing for a whole year without first asking what Jesus would do in their situation, or how he would do it. I think it would be neat to write a book modeled after In His Steps but to change the setting to the present day, as some of the issues the characters faced in the 1890s are a bit hard to relate to. Nonetheless, Sheldon presented a lot of the timeless struggles of Christian living: How do you spend not just your money (which is relatively easy to give away), but also your time and your talent? How does your faith affect the way you do your tasks at work? How does it affect your relationships? I was especially provoked to thought by Sheldon's ideas on getting involved in politics...though I would do so--am doing so--to fight for peace, freedom, and the Constitution (yay Ron Paul!) instead of for getting rid of saloons, as Sheldon's characters did. : ) (less)

I must confess that all of my life I have heard the phrase “What Would Jesus Do,” but was rather clueless about where it came from or what it meant. I’ve seen those words while stuck in traffic on quite possibly thousands of bumper stickers over my lifetime, but honestly never understood what the heck “WWJD?” actually meant. The story itself was ok, I did find it took me a long time to read, it wasn't a hard read it just seemed a long read.
The lesson and challenge at the forefront of the story was the thing that got me and will keep me thinking about for the rest of my life and that is : What Would Jesus Do? to ask that question in every part of your life, for everything I have belongs to God and really I should be sharing that with those around me. There is a cost in following Jesus and that is I need to die to self daily.
This book should make us uncomfortable and challenge our thinking and change our daily choices. (less)

Would it fail a writing class today? Probably.

3.5 stars for how much I enjoyed it as a novel, 4 stars for the great lessons.

Overall, it was thought-provoking, moving (not in the ways it *should have been* moving, always? I probably should have *felt* more often than I did... but I didn't really connect with anyone, ever), and a great read for any Christian. Christians in America could really use the lessons and themes in this novel.

An interesting and thought provoking read, though I'm not sure I agree with its definition of Christian discipleship.

As a Latter-day Saint, I believe the family is central to the plan God has for us on earth. I believe we are expected to follow Christ, while raising our families as best we can. This means our day-to-day lives are filled with nurturing our children and providing for their physical and spiritual needs, rather than devoted to humanitarian aid. (Though, I'd argue that caring for children could certainly be characterized as "clothing the naked and feeding the hungry.") There really aren't any good examples of families, as a whole, following Christ in this book and I found that frustrating.

Another thread in the book is the necessity to "suffer" for Christ. I'm not certain that the suffering should be the focus. Sacrifice is certainly a part of discipleship, but so is happiness and joy. Adam fell that men might be and men are that they might have joy. (2 Nephi 2:25) (less)

Written in 1896, In His Steps was probably the catalyst for the 1990s WWJD movement. The book is so much better as the 1990s WWJD was overly merchandised and marketed. The characters in the book sacrificed so much and were truly obedient to the Spirit. They were focused on how WWJD would serve others and not themselves. I had read the younger version of "In His Steps" when I was younger, but I had never read the adult version. Well, this year it was required for my English literature course, so of course I read it.
Wow.

Again a famous read that many love. This is a pretty good book, I found it a little heavy on the legalism. I read many Christian books where in discussing Grace the writer seems to be afraid that the reader might take the proclaimation of complete grace (That we find in the Bible) for license so the "moderate" it. That happens a little here. Still, read, enjoy...understand the works we do don't earn us a place with Christ. They flow from that relationship. (less)

My main issue with this book is that as Christians, we pledge to follow Jesus's steps from the day we get saved. It's not just a year-long challenge. It's something we should be (and should have been doing) every day. I won't even touch on the writing issues. (less)

A very thought provoking book. Based in the early 1900's, a church congregation is challenged to ask 'What would Jesus Do?' before each decision they make for an entire year. You get to know specific members who give up large amounts of money, comforts, and temporal luxuries in order to walk in His steps.

Reading this book, you can't help but analyze your own life. You start to understand that you cannot judge others (as much as you want to). Because, 'what would Jesus do?' is a very personal question. It should be more like, 'What would Jesus do (in my situation)?' - and only you can answer that as moved upon by the spirit of Christ.

With a heavy focus on career and money, the accounts in this book motivate me to give up some of my temporal happiness to gain richer spiritual happiness through serving the poor and seeking after eternal riches (coming to know my savior more fully and spending my days serving Him as opposed to seeking after temporal riches and experiences through the ever moving target of earning more and more $$).

A true Christian dedicated their life to following Christ and coming to know Him better. This book has inspired me to try harder to better understand what Jesus would do if in my situation - though I think it is a life-long journey to truly know the answer to that question.




Some notes and quotes from my reading:

"What would Jesus Do? - suppose that were the motto, not only of the churches, but of the business men, the politicians, the newspapers, the working men, the society people - how long would it take, under such a standard of conduct to revolutionize the world? What was the problem with the world? It was suffering from selfishness. No one ever lived who has succeeded in overcoming selfishness like Jesus. If men followed Him, regardless of results, the world would at once begin to enjoy a new life."


It seems to me there's an awful lot of trouble in the world that somehow wouldn't exist if all the people who sing such songs (all for Jesus, all for Jesus, ...) went and lived them out

I am a little in doubt as to the source of our knowledge concerning what would Jesus do. Who is to decide for me just what Jesus would do in my case? It is a different age. There are many perplexing questions in our civilization that are not mentioned in the teaching of Jesus. How am I going to tell what he would do?
- there is no way that I know of, except as we study Jesus through the medium of the Holy Spirit

"But we need to remember this fact: after we have asked the Spirit to tell us what Jesus would do and have received an answer to it, we are to act regardless of the results to ourselves."

"I think perhaps I find it specifically difficult to answer the question on account of my money. Jesus never owned any property, and there is nothing in His example to guide me in the use of mine. ...what would Jesus do with a million dollars? ..I confess that I am not yet able to answer it to my satisfaction."

*what I find so different here is just the direct black and white/ right and wrong correlations. It is easy for everyone to see that hanging around in this area and falling drunken out of the saloon is bad. The girl even says "I belong to hell." And Virginia responds - "no, you belong to Jesus."
- in our world today it isn't about saving people from the strip clubs and bars and bringing them to church. It's about being an example in many many many gray areas...

She brought the homeless girl home and drove her grandmother out because of it

Although this book is quite dated in terms of society it does touch a spark of conscience as the reader considers the question “what would Jesus do”. It has challenged me to make a comittment to better know and understand what Jesus would do by studying Gods word and getting to know Him better

Take caution not to let this lead you into legalism, but for the most part this is a convicting perspective on Christian living, sacrifice, and evangelism. It really shows how little we NEED, and how much we are able to GIVE if we allow ourselves not to be swallowed up in pride, greed, and selfishness.
