최현민 (지은이)



가톨릭 수도자(사랑의 씨튼 수녀회 소속)이다. 수녀회에 입회하기 전에는 생명의 신비를 탐구하기 위해 과학도의 길을 걷다가(이화여대와 연세대에서 생물과 생화학 전공), 과학으로는 인간과 세상을 이해하는 데 역부족이라는 생각이 들어 종교의 길로 방향을 바꾸었다.

수녀회에 들어와 종교학을 공부하면서(서강대 대학원 종교학 석사 및 박사), 특히 깊은 수행전통을 지닌 불교에 마음이 끌려 불교를 탐구하기 시작했다. 불교를 공부하면서 자연스레 그리스도교와 불교 간의 대화에 관심을 갖게 되었고, 종교대화 씨튼연구원 원장으로서 오랫동안 종교 간 대화 일을 해오고 있다.

현재 서강대학교에서 일본종교를 가르치면서, 「영성생활」 편집인을 맡고 있다.

한국에는 불교와 그리스도교라는 두 종교적 산맥이 있다. 두 종교는 교리와 전통이 서로 판이하게 달라 보이지만, 진리 앞에 자신을 낮추고 그 진리를 끊임없이 추구한다는 점에서는 공통된 목적을 지닌다고 말할 수 있다. 그리고 이 두 종교 공동체의 일부 깨어 있는 이들이 오래전부터 서로를 배우는 진지한 대화를 해오고 있다. 이러한 사실 자체는 인간의 궁극적 행복과 진리를 추구하는 특정 종교가 타종교에 대해 어떠한 마음가짐과 자세로 다가가고 어떻게 서로 부족한 점을 배워야 하는가를 모범적으로 보여주고 있다.

10개월간의 대화에 참여한 세 명의 승려 및 불교학자와 네 명의 그리스도교 수도자 및 신학자들은 다음 세 가지 점에 공감하면서 대화를 진행하였다. 첫째, 오늘날의 생태 위기는 기계적 발전에 대한 맹신과 인간중심적 세계관에 기초를 두고, 물질적 소유가 행복을 가져온다는 잘못된 가치관에 뿌리를 두고 있으며, 따라서 그 대안을 애착에서 자유로워지고 이기심을 비우는 데서 찾아야 한다는 점이다. 둘째, 생태 위기를 극복하기 위해서는 인간이 다른 생명체와 독립해서 홀로 살 수 있다는 무지와, 경제적 풍요가 행복을 보장한다는 환상을 깨야 한다는 점이다. 이런 점에서 불교의 인드라망 개념은 만물이 연결되어 있다는 생태적 현실을 이해하는 데 그리스도인들에게도 매우 유용하다. 셋째, 소박하고 검소한 삶의 양식이 생태 영성을 살아가는 구체적 표현이라는 것이다.

이러한 기본 관점을 기저로 하여 진행된 대화의 내용을 소개하면 다음과 같다.

‘생태 위기의 관점에서 종래의 자연과 인간 이해에 대한 성찰’에서는 자본주의와 생태 위기의 상관관계를 다루었다. 그중에서도 자본주의의 인간관에 대한 성찰의 필요성을 부각하면서, 인간의 본성은 신고전주의에서 말하듯 이기적이고 합리적인 존재라기보다 호혜적 존재라는 것을 강조하고 있다. 특히 이러한 새로운 인간관은 불교를 비롯한 동양종교의 본성론과 상통한다는 점을 지적하고 있다.

‘초기불교와 상좌부불교에서의 생태 영성’은 고집멸도의 사성제四正諦에 입각하여 생태 문제를 고찰하고 있다. 여기서는 생태 문제의 근본 원인을 무지와 무명으로 보고 이를 깨치는 구체적인 방법으로 팔정도八正道를 제시한다. 팔정도를 실천하여 사는 것 자체를 생태 문제를 풀어가는 해법으로 본 것이다. 이와 같이 근본불교의 정수가 생태 문제와 맞닿아 있다는 것은 ‘불교 영성이 곧 생태 영성’임을 말해준다.

‘선과 생태 영성’은 마음과 반야지혜, 정토를 주요 키워드로 하여 선과 자연과 영성의 문제를 다루고 있다. 특히 나라는 존재는 모든 인연에 의해 이루어졌음을 강조하고 있는데, 따라서 자연이 곧 자기 몸인 줄 모르고 생태를 파괴시켜 온 우리에게 무엇보다 선행되어야 할 것은 존재 근원의 마음을 회복하는 일이다. 이를 위해 끊임없이 욕망을 불러일으키는 우리의 마음을 닦아야 한다. 이런 점에서 불교적 생태 해법의 핵심은 ‘마음 닦음’에 있다고 강조한다.

‘도겐(道元)의 생태 영성’에서는 일본 조동종의 창시자 도겐 선사가 말한 ‘산과 물, 곧 자연 자체가 붓다의 말씀’에 주목한다. 즉 산수山水 안에서 붓다의 모습을 발견하고 산수를 통해 붓다의 가르침을 듣는다는 것이다. 이와 같이 산수를 부처의 경전으로 바라보며 그 안에서 부처를 발견할 수 있는 시각을 가지려면 무엇보다 ‘무상’에 대한 자각이 필요하다. 즉 자본주의적 가치관이 우리를 행복에로 이끄는 것이 아님을 깨달을 필요가 있다. 이를 통해 진정한 행복은 소유함에 있기보다 소욕지족함에 있음을 강조하며, 이를 도겐의 사상에서 찾고 있다.

‘화엄과 생태 영성’에서는 화엄사상을 통해 생태적 해법을 제시하고 있다. 화엄의 존재관은 제석천의 보배구슬 그물망처럼 독립한 개체이면서 전체의 일부분으로 존재한다고 본다. 이러한 인드라망을 ‘중중무진重重無盡’ 또는 법계연기法界緣起라고 한다. 법계연기란 존재의 근원을 유기적인 관계성, 곧 공존공생의 이치로 바라봄을 의미한다. 이와 같이 화엄에서는 모든 존재가 끝없는 관계 속에 서로 걸림 없이 상호 의존한다고 하는 원융무애적 존재관을 잘 보여주고 있다.

‘생태 영성과 성서’에서는 유대 그리스도교 신앙의 핵심주제인 ‘계약’을 우주적 차원으로 해석하는데, 여기서의 우주적 계약이란 하느님과 인간 간의 계약을 넘어 자연까지도 포괄한다는 것이다. 하느님과 맺은 계약이 이처럼 우주적 차원을 지녔다면 인간과 자연의 긴밀한 관계, 그리고 인간 이외의 피조물들이 지닌 가치를 새롭게 해석할 수 있다는 것이다. 아울러 예수의 육화신앙과 연관 지어 생태 문제를 살펴보면서, 그리스도교 생태 영성이란 창조, 육화, 부활이라는 예수 그리스도를 통한 하느님의 사건과 행위가 인간만이 아니라 창조 전체와 깊은 관련이 있음을 깨닫고 이에 따라 사는 것을 뜻한다고 결론짓고 있다.

‘생태학적 관점에서 본 진화론’에서는 그리스도교의 입장에서 진화론을 성찰하면서, 이러한 성찰을 매개로 생태적 위기를 타개할 수 방안을 모색한다. 즉 종의 기원을 말한 진화론의 시각에서 종의 멸종을 염려할 수밖에 없는 생태계 위기에 대한 지혜를 얻고자 함과 동시에, 진화의 궁극 목적에 대한 이해를 통해 생태적 해법을 제시하고자 한다. 이를 위해 우주적 그리스도와 같은 진화론에 대한 신학적 이해가 필요하다고 말한다. 그리고 특히 다석 유영모의 사상을 통해 우주적 그리스도론의 한국적 이해를 도모하고자 한다.

‘그리스도교적 생태 영성-사회적 관점’에서는 요한복음에 나오는 베짜타 연못을 둘러싼 경쟁의 원리, 즉 누군가의 도움 없이는 연못에 들어갈 수 없는 앉은뱅이는 경쟁의 원리 안에서 38년간이나 병을 안고 살아갈 수밖에 없음을 비판한다. 그러나 예수가 제시한 ‘하느님 나라’는 경쟁적으로 단 한 사람에게만 자비를 허용하는 베데스다의 원리와는 다름을 보여준다. 그러면서 오늘날의 생태 회복은 현대자본주의 사회의 경쟁원리를 어떻게 자비와 연대의 영성으로 변화시킬 것인가에 있음을 강조한다.

마지막으로 ‘생태 위기 극복을 위한 불교와 그리스도교의 만남’에서는 생태 위기의 근본 원인은 결국 인간의 이기주의, 자기중심주의에 있다고 진단하면서, 이를 극복하기 위해서는 인간의 본래성을 회복해야 하며, 그 회복의 방법으로 불교와 그리스도교에서 제시하는 생태 영성을 종합적으로 정리하고 있다. 이에 덧붙여 호모 심비우스라는 존재론의 자각에 근거한 소욕지족의 삶을 살아갈 때 우리가 당면한 생태 위기는 회복의 길로 접어들 수 있다고 말한다.

불교와 그리스도교 모두 그들의 전통과 사상 안에 훌륭한 생태 영성적 보물을 간직하고 있다는 점은 자명하다. 다만 불교적 보물이 투명하다면, 그리스도교적 보물은 끄집어내서 먼지를 닦고 광을 내게 해야 한다는 차이가 있을 뿐이다. 그러므로 그리스도교는 인간과 만물의 연계성을 통찰한 불교적 이론에서 도움을 받을 수 있고, 불교는 그리스도교가 발전시킨 현실적, 사회적 투신에서 배울 점을 발견할 수 있을 것이다.

이와 같이 이 책은 불교인과 그리스도인이 만나 지구 전체의 공통 문제인 생태 문제에 대해 각 종교가 지닌 전통 속에서 함께 고민하고 해결점을 모색한 귀중한 종교 대화록이자 보고서라고 할 수 있다.

또한 이 책을 통해 오늘을 사는 한국의 불자들과 그리스도인들은 이웃 종교와 어떻게 대화할 수 있으며, 서로에게 배우려는 자세가 얼마나 소중하고 아름다운 가치인가를 깊이 느낄 수 있을 것이다.

Despite the significance of Korea in world Christianity and the crucial role Christianity plays in contemporary Korean religious life, the tradition has been little studied in the West. Christianity in Korea seeks to fill this lacuna by providing a wide-ranging overview of the growth and development of Korean Christianity and the implications that development has had for Korean politics, interreligious dialogue, and gender and social issues.

The volume begins with an accessibly written overview that traces in broad outline the history and development of Christianity on the peninsula. This is followed by chapters on broad themes, such as the survival of early Korean Catholics in a Neo-Confucian society, relations between Christian churches and colonial authorities during the Japanese occupation, premillennialism, and the theological significance of the division and prospective reunification of Korea. Others look in more detail at individuals and movements, including the story of the female martyr Kollumba Kang Wansuk; the influence of Presbyterianism on the renowned nationalist Ahn Changho; the sociopolitical and theological background of the Minjung Protestant Movement; and the success and challenges of Evangelical Protestantism in Korea. The quality of writing varies depending upon the author and the topic, but for the most part it is a scholarly and interesting perspective on the history and current state of Christianity in Korea. The book is composed of a collection of essays on the topic, and while it is not necessarily a linear history of Korean Christianity, it is at the very least a useful supplement to anyone interested in expanding their knolwedge on the topic. The articles range from discussions of Christianity's early interaction with Neo-Confucianism to critiques of the Presbyterian movement in present-day Korea; the variety of sources is, in my opinion, one of the best parts of the book, though it does create a somewhat choppy reading experience. The editor definitely tried to create a smooth collection, but didn't necessarily always succeed. Nonetheless the material is top-notch and everyone interested in any topic connecting to Korean Christianity will find something to keep them reading.

Sung-Deuk Oak’s The Making of Korean Christianity is a tremendous contribution to the World Christianity Series and religions scholarship in general. Sketched thematically, Oak surveys a host of letters by Protestant missionaries and emerging indigenous voices. Issues concerning Korean Christianity’s adoption of a shamanistic deity’s name (hananim), changing perspectives of the cross, awareness of spirits and the need for exorcism, funeral memorials, influences from Chinese tracts and messages, and Daoist spirituality and rituals are all considered under Oak’s astute scholarship. Additionally considered are the tumultuous and volatile times Korea had from 1876-1915: Tonghak Rebellion, Russo-Japanese War, Sino-Japanese War, and more. These pressuring forces undoubtedly, at times, prevented and, at other times, encouraged Christianity’s acceptance. Oak is, also, sharp enough to notice the difference between simplistic (and insulting) syncretism and indigenizing Christianity. On the other hand, if ‘syncretism’ is held purely as a neutral descriptor (as this blogger is starting to hold), then the what and how of Korean Christians’ reactions to the Protestant religion can be accurately depicted and affirmed as good indigenization of the Gospel.

Personally, I have found this extremely helpful academically and for my own self-discovery (as a Korean American). But I can understand why some people might feel uneasy about Oak’s ease to associate folk religions’ influence on Korean Christianity. To not feel uneasy, one then must think hard about Christianity’s relations with cultures and come to conclusions about their relationships. For Oak (and I), Christianity is inherently a translatable and (re)contextualizable religion. In other words, Christianity must be indigenized.
