Description

Indian culture is incredibly complex and resembles a chaos of mind-boggling proportions. But beneath this seeming chaos is a scientific foundation that is thousands of years old.

Yogi and mystic, Sadhguru, looks at the basis behind the various elements of Indian culture and customs, and explains how every detail in this tradition was geared towards a human being’s immediate and ultimate wellbeing.

The most significant aspect of 'Bharat' (the cultural name of India) is that this is a land of Seekers , and not Believers of any particular religious doctrine( although we have over 33 million Gods and Goddesses in this country).

In this Culture, 'Mukti' or ultimate liberation from the cycles of life and death has been seen as the highest goal that one can aspire for. It is because of that, this culture created a variety of Tools for the Ultimate Well-being of a Person. No other culture on the planet has looked at a human being with as much depth and understanding as this culture has. No other culture has looked at it as a science and created methods to evolve a person into his ultimate nature.

Sadhguru goes on to say that we have the technologies as to how to manufacture an enlightened being.

Every culture is valuable to that particular population largely for emotional and territorial reasons. But the significance of Indian culture is that it is a scientific process towards human liberation and well-being and hence can offer a beautiful future for all of humanity. So, creating the necessary ambience for spiritual growth of a human being, is what you see as this culture.

In India, the way people look, their language, food, way of dressing, music and dance, everything is different every 50 or 100 kilometers in the country. Everything about people who live in this country is different, but a common cultural thread has held us together. This culture of what India has been, which cannot be quantified, is simply there. Wherever you go in the world, if you see an Indian, the very way he sits and walks, you know he is an Indian!

Here we say that whatever is happening to you is your karma. That means it is your making. You are the maker of your life and hence can craft your life whichever way you want it to be, if you learn to be conscious of certain aspects.

In this course 'Indian culture from a Mystic's view' Sadhguru explores the various aspects of Indian culture, from the mundane to the profound :

Sadhguru explains the significance of Festivals like Diwali, Holi and Dussehra ; explaining how celebration can be a passageway to the most profound aspects of life.

Sadhguru explains the meaning of the name “Bharat”, and how it wasn’t just a name inherited from India’s first emperor, but a scientific device to find your rhythm with the tune of existence.

Sadhguru describes the nature of consecration and what makes this life-transforming science so relevant to humanity.

India is a land of temples. Sadhguru looks at how for millennia, temples have been energy centers and instruments for raising human consciousness. He also explores the science behind their creation.

Sadhguru speaks about powerful sacred places like Kailash, the great repository of mystical knowledge.

We look at the science and impact of Indian classical music, as Sadhguru interacts with Pandit Jasraj, doyen of Hindustani classical music.

Sadhguru speaks about the science behind the system of gotras and kulas that were established in Indian culture, which show a deep understanding of genetics.

Sadhguru looks at the science and significance behind the Kumbha Mela, the greatest gathering of people in the world.

With India fast becoming a truly global environment in terms of economy, food and culture, what does it take to make sure our youth do not forget the richness of being Indian?

It would take thousands of years to set up such a complex scientific mechanism that constantly drives you towards your liberation. In this culture, the way you sit, stand, or do anything else, it is structured in a way that leads to your wellbeing. Be it Music, Arts or Dance-forms – everything – is oriented towards making you free. People who get deeply involved in these aspects naturally turn spiritual.

"Wherever I travel, whatever kinds of groups of people I meet, I have spoken to top-level scientists, academics and students at very prestigious universities, and various other kinds of people, but I always find that the groups I meet in India are far sharper and smarter than most people anywhere in the world. The country is so effortlessly going ahead in the information technology age while everyone else is struggling essentially because the spiritual ethos in the culture has sharpened the intellect in a certain way."

Sadhguru : Insights and Wisdom
Yogi, Mystic, Visionary, Spiritual Guide

“This life for me is an endeavor to help people experience and express their divinity. May you know the bliss of the Divine.” - Sadhguru

A realized yogi, visionary and a profound mystic of our times, Sadhguru, has dedicated himself to the physical, mental, and spiritual wellbeing of all people. Though Yoga and meditation are at the core of his teachings, he is also a sought after opinion maker who is regularly invited to speak at leading international forums and many prestigious global conferences such as The World Peace Summit at the United Nations and the World Economic Forum as well as countless Educational Institutions including Oxford, Yale and Harvard.

A multi-faceted personality, he is also a bestselling author and poet, an adventurer by heart, a consultant, an architect and a philanthropist along with being a mystic of unfathomable proportions and a spiritual master with a difference. In a manner that is candid, audacious and unpretentious, he shatters conventional definitions of morality, religion and spirituality.

At home in loincloth as much as he is in blue jeans, barefoot through the mighty Himalayas, or straddling a BMW motorcycle on the expressway, Sadhguru is the most unusual mystic that one can encounter. Marking a clear departure from mere customs and rituals, Sadhguru's scientific methods for self-transformation are both direct and powerful. He is often described as a 'Contemporary Guru', since he belongs to no particular tradition and incorporates aspects of yogic sciences that are most relevant for modern-day life into his teachings and practices. His scientific methods for self-transformation have universal appeal.

Sadhguru’s insights into the mechanisms of life are an outcome of his profound experience of the Self, and serve as a guide to exploring the deeper dimensions of life. His life and work serve as reminders that the inner science of yoga is not esoteric philosophy from an outdated past, but is absolutely relevant and applicable to our lives today.

His fundamental vision is to offer the Science of Inner Wellbeing to every human being – a science that helps a person realize the ultimate potential within. From this vision stem a multitude of projects, programs and methods, all towards the same aim: to raise every human being to the peak of their potential, so that they are exuberant, all-inclusive, and in harmony within themselves and the world. Sadhguru has often said that, “(Today) Society is overripe for a Spiritual Process.”

Achievements at a Glance

Absolute clarity of perception places Sadhguru in a unique space, not only in matters spiritual but in business, environmental and international affairs, and opens a new door on all that he touches. Probing and passionate, insightful, logical and unfailingly witty, Sadhguru's talks have earned him the reputation of a speaker and opinion-maker of international renown. He has been a lead speaker at the United Nations General Assembly, a regular at the World Economic Forum, and a special invitee at the Australian Leadership Retreat, Indian Economic Summit and TED. His astute and incisive grasp of world affairs, as well as his unerringly scientific approach to human well-being have had a transformative influence at establishments such as the World Bank, House of Lords (UK), the World Presidents’ Organization, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the London Business School, Google, and Microsoft, to name a few. With a celebratory engagement with life on all levels, Sadhguru's areas of active involvement encompass fields as diverse as architecture and visual design, poetry and painting, ecology and horticulture, sports and music. He is the designer of several unique buildings and consecrated spaces at the Isha Yoga Center, which have received wide attention for their combination of intense sacred power with strikingly innovative Eco-friendly aesthetics. He is also among the top 50 most influential people in India. Sadhguru's vision and understanding of modern social and economic issues have led to countless interviews with BBC, Bloomberg, CNBC, CNNfn,Newsweek International and so on. His insights are regularly featured in India's leading national newspapers. A well-known public figure, he regularly draws crowds of more than 300,000 people for his public talks and "sathsangs" (group meditation).

Sadhguru established the Isha Foundation, a volunteer-run, international, nonprofit organization dedicated to cultivating human potential for the past three decades. It does not promote any particular ideology, religion, or race, but transmits inner sciences of universal appeal. The Foundation is headquartered at Isha Yoga Center in southern India and at Isha Institute of Inner-sciences in the United States. Under the guidance of Sadhguru and driven by a sense of oneness, love, and a deep longing to reach out and share, the Isha Foundation has also implemented several large-scale human service projects for rural upliftment , education reform, environmental stewardship, as well as holistic and healthy living. Isha Foundation has been recently invited by Clinton foundation to join its Clinton Global Initiative CGI. Thanks to the scientific approach, Isha's flagship program, called "Inner Engineering" has received international recognition and approval from leading corporations, universities and global forums such as Google, General Electric, the World Bank and others. To date, "Inner Engineering" has entered the lives of more than 100 million people.

Above all, Sadhguru is a living master whose voice is a distinct one: frank, bold, hard-hitting, funny and provocative. Above all it is a voice that refuses to perpetuate the cliches of archetypal Holy Man Discourse. Here is a voice that speaks with an authority that could strike you as arrogant but never sanctimonious, unfaltering but never unconsidered.

As the title suggests, this course focuses on Indian Culture. It includes a wealth of information on spiritual aspects of this culture as well as social issues. For a non-Indian (such as an American like me), this is an enjoyable way to learn more about the culture that gave us Yoga, Hinduism, Buddhism, etc. You also learn a bit about Indian daily life, about cultural aspects that are becoming lost due to western influences, & certain critical social issues facing India today. You might think these are just of interest as a cultural travelogue, but many of these same social issues are part of our own society (i.e.child hunger, the ways economics have taken over our ideas of human success & the destruction of so much of the human potential). The segments are short so you can easily go through them as you have time. Overall, a fine way to learn more about our human spiritual roots and potential as well as get outside our constant focus on our own culture.

Yoga for Beginners - Simple, Energitic and Complete

Yoga for Beginners - Simple, Energitic and Complete

Ready to learn some beginner yoga postures? Let’s get started.
For many people, learning yoga postures is about getting fit and in shape. While there are undeniable physical benefits to yoga,
the true purpose of yoga goes far beyond losing weight, putting on muscle or becoming flexible. Yoga postures, or asanas, have a much deeper impact on you, as Sadhguru explains below:
“If you observe yourself, when you are angry, you sit one way. If you are happy, you sit another way. If you are depressed, another way. For every level of consciousness or mental and emotional situation you go through, your body tends to take certain postures. The converse of this is the science of asanas.
If you consciously get your body into different postures, you can elevate your consciousness. Understanding the mechanics of the body, creating a certain atmosphere, and using the body to drive your energy in specific directions is what yogasanas are about.” – Sadhguru
Yoga offers tremendous possibilities, but it also demands discipline and precision. Improper yoga could cause more harm than benefit.
Those looking for basic yoga asanas, may want to begin with what is called Upa Yoga (literally pre-yoga) which comprises of easy yoga postures for beginners that give you physical and mental benefits.
Learn Upa Yoga – 5-minute practices of your choice. These beginner yoga postures are potent tools to enhance health, joy, peace, love, success and inner exploration, helping one cope with the hectic pace of modern life and realize their full potential in all spheres of life.
For those who have the focus and commitment to venture into yoga, the best way is to learn is by attending an Isha Hatha Yoga program near you. These programs offer a variety of powerful and beneficial classical yoga practices taught with dedication and care by certified Isha Hatha Yoga teachers.

Everyday, millions of people roll out their yoga mats or sit on their meditation cushions in an effort to quiet the mind and heal the body. Some practice Iyengar yoga, while others practice vinyasa or restorative yoga—almost all who practice yoga have touched something deep within themselves and had their lives transformed by this ancient practice.

In Yoga and the Path of the Urban Mystic, Darren Main offers a fresh, down-to-earth approach to the time-tested practice and philosophy of yoga. He shows us the way to apply the ancient wisdom of India to every aspect of life. From work and relationships, to death and dying—allowing even our busiest days to become powerful and mystical adventures, filled with all the wonder and magic that was once reserved for those living as monks and nuns.

This is not a book about perfecting yoga asanas or pranayama breathing techniques. It is a book about changing the way we see the world—transforming every experience and relationship into a yoga practice unto itself.

Since teachers like Swami Vivakananda and Paramahansa Yogananda brought yoga to the West, yoga students and teachers alike have sought to integrate the practice and philosophy of yoga into modern life. Find out why this best-selling yoga book has been used in yoga teacher training programs the world over and has become a modern spiritual classic.

_______

With gentle humor and obvious knowledge, Darren Main shares with us his practice and understanding of yoga. He does a beautiful job of interspersing his life experiences with the classical teachings in a way that makes them clear and alive. You will enjoy this book.
—Judith Hanson Lasater, Ph.D. Author of 30 Essential Yoga Poses and Living Your Yoga

Our urban lifestyles could greatly benefit from a bit of mysticism. To live in a magical, mystical world one only has to uncover the potential in their own daily lives. Darren Main gives us a how-to book on yoga, which offers us ways to transform the mundane into the mystical.
—Sharon Gannon, Author of Jivamukti Yoga

Darren Main is wonderfully talented at bringing the essence of living yoga off the mat fully to life for all who are on the yoga path. He writes in a friendly and accessible tone that makes often esoteric philosophical concepts easy to grasp in practical ways that one can apply in daily life. I highly recommend this book to all yoga students and teachers interested in more deeply exploring the practice on the mat and bringing it all more broadly into their life out in the larger world.
—Mark Stephens, Teaching Yoga: Essential Foundations and Techniques

A practical, easy-to-read road map to becoming an Urban Mystic
—Gerald G. Jampolsky, M.D. Author of Shortcuts to God and Love is Letting Go of Fear

In Yoga and the Path of the Urban Mystic Darren Main has given us a wonderful doorway into the potentially complex world of raja yoga. His work provides us with a compelling but accessible Baedeker to the sometimes dense world of Indian metaphysics. It is a yoga commentary with a uniquely American voice. It is piquant, experience-near, real, contemporary, and very sensitive to the reader for whom the world of Sanskrit terms and Indian ideas is completely new and foreign. Darren’s work, like raja yoga itself, is precise and methodical in its approach to spiritual practice.
—Stephen Cope Author of Yoga and the Quest for the True Self

Darren Main takes yoga off the yoga mat—adroitly applying the ancient system of yoga to the daily challenges of the modern mystic. Combining personal insight and anecdotes with practical, down-to-earth teachings, he brings you into a world in which every part of your life has sacred and transformative potential.
—Yogi Amrit Desai Founder of Kripalu Yoga, Lenox, MA, and author of Amrit Yoga

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolutely amazing resource for a a yogi at any point in the journey towards enlightenment!Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2017
Format: PaperbackVerified Purchase
This book is so real and honest! I often feel that texts on this subject can be alienating or inaccessible, this book was incredibly refreshing. An absolutely amazing resource for a a yogi at any point in their spiritual journey. Darren covers the 8 limbed path, the ego, maya and many more illuminating topics. I found the book to be rooted in history and it was not watered down or overtly western. Research, appreciation and care were brought into explaining ancient philosophical perspectives.

The information presented was accessible, insightful, and useful in many areas of my life. The urban mystic is alive and real, and I felt that through Darren's stories of personal discovery while encouraging the pursuit of exploration without attachment when observing our own lives. I read this book for a teacher training and was so excited to deepen my understanding of what yoga means as a way of life and not just an hour long workout. I feel at ease knowing that it is meant to be a practice of being better, not perfect, the connection and importance of service really spoke to me and my journey in finding a career as well.

Overall this book gave me so much and has inspired me to do so for others throughout my journey as a yogi! Thanks Darren!

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I needed, when I needed it.Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2018
Format: Kindle EditionVerified Purchase
This book fell into my lap at a time when I was searching for answers. I had just barely begun a yoga practice for health and physical reasons. I wasn’t aware of how much I needed the deeper level this book provides until I read it.
Darren is extremely easy to follow. His writing is clear and concise. He offers gems of wisdom that whet the appetite for more. He gets right to the root of the matter and touches the places where others just gloss over the surface.
This book has set me on the path of deeper exploration, with joy in my heart about what I will find - whether “good” or “bad.” It is not an instruction manual to tell you how to live your life, or spoon feed you what you think you need. Rather, it is an outline, or a map, to help you find your own way to peace.
Nice work, Darren. I will definitely be handing this out to my friends. The only drawback is that now I’m going to have to buy a print version, so I can make notes and highlights...

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have for any yoga teacher, period!Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2017
Format: PaperbackVerified Purchase
This book is a must have for any yoga teacher period! Grasping the teachings of the bhagvad gita, the upanishads, and the yamas and niyamas is a very complicated process. The teachings were traditionally spoken, then applied; students would be with their masters for as long as it takes to understand the path. Our modern times do not afford us the opportunity to develop with any true integrity the true teachings and yet we as a society scream for it. Darren Main's book, Yoga and the Path of the Urban Mystic, has a beautiful way of applying these ancient teachings to modern day approaches and clarity. It not only helps one to apply these lessons to our modern lives, but gains our understanding of how simple it is to truly follow the path of the urban mystic. I have read this book myself and to my students for years and the meanings often times change and grow with the student. Like my favorite passage states, 'When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.'

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book - highly recommend for its clarity and practical approachReviewed in the United States on May 23, 2019

My friends/yoga teachers Dennis & Kathy Lang are true yogis and authors themselves (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1719441154/ref=tmm_pap_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=&sr=) so I knew I could trust their recommendations for books on a deeper understanding of yoga. They recommended “Urban Mystic” and it is such a wonderful book. With clear and simple language as well as humor, Darren Main demystifies yoga principles while maintaining an attitude of deep respect for the practice He adds stories from his own life and those of friends and students to further clarify how yoga can change lives for the better. How to bring yoga into a “ modern” life? Here it is. Highly recommend.🙏

5.0 out of 5 stars Great introduction for new yoga teachers and other urban mysticsReviewed in the United States on February 14, 2016
Format: Kindle EditionVerified Purchase
I read this book during the yoga teacher training with Darren and found it an excellent resource for someone who needs an initial introduction to yoga philosophy. It's relatable: there are many personal examples that illuminate the concepts effectively and are also enjoyable to read. The book is written almost deceptively simply and yet it gives an effective and thought provoking introduction to yoga history and philosophy, including the eight limbs, and how they relate to the present day. The fact that there are so many contemporary and real examples makes it particularly useful for yoga teachers, because we can think of similar experiences from our own lives and use them to relate to our students. The path to further studies is clearly outlined and made easy. In summary, this is a great resource for the new yoga teachers and other urban mystics.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Thought leader, visionary, philanthropist, mystic, and yogi Sadhguru presents Western readers with a time-tested path to achieving absolute well-being: the classical science of yoga.

NAMED ONE OF THE TEN BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY SPIRITUALITY & HEALTH
The practice of hatha yoga, as we commonly know it, is but one of eight branches of the body of knowledge that is yoga. In fact, yoga is a sophisticated system of self-empowerment that is capable of harnessing and activating inner energies in such a way that your body and mind function at their optimal capacity. It is a means to create inner situations exactly the way you want them, turning you into the architect of your own joy.

A yogi lives life in this expansive state, and in this transformative book Sadhguru tells the story of his own awakening, from a boy with an unusual affinity for the natural world to a young daredevil who crossed the Indian continent on his motorcycle. He relates the moment of his enlightenment on a mountaintop in southern India, where time stood still and he emerged radically changed. Today, as the founder of Isha, an organization devoted to humanitarian causes, he lights the path for millions. The term guru, he notes, means “dispeller of darkness, someone who opens the door for you. . . .

As a guru, I have no doctrine to teach, no philosophy to impart, no belief to propagate. And that is because the only solution for all the ills that plague humanity is self-transformation. Self-transformation means that nothing of the old remains. It is a dimensional shift in the way you perceive and experience life.” The wisdom distilled in this accessible, profound, and engaging book offers readers time-tested tools that are fresh, alive, and radiantly new. Inner Engineering presents a revolutionary way of thinking about our agency and our humanity and the opportunity to achieve nothing less than a life of joy.

VINE VOICE
5.0 out of 5 stars A book to be studied, not read, to engineer your life
Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2016
Format: HardcoverVine Customer Review of Free Product( What's this? )

Yesterday I cut two oranges to juice for my morning smoothie. As I was juicing one of them, I heard myself say, "This orange is BAD. It's so dry."

Option 1: "It's so dry I'm getting less than a quarter cup. Instead of needing only two oranges, I'm going to have to juice four. What a ripoff. I'm paying double for oranges. And now I have to go to the store to get more oranges. What if they're bad, too?"

Option 2: "It is what it is: a dry orange. I'll just have to juice four instead of two. Better get another bag of oranges."

Sadhguru writes, "...whatever the events and situations around you, you don't get crushed by them; you ride them." And, "To mold situations the way you want them you must first know who you are. The crux of the matter is that you don't yet know who you are. Who you are is not the sum total of accumulations you have made. Everything that you currently know as 'myself' is just an accumulation. Your body is just an accumulation of food. Your mind is just an accumulation of impressions gathered through the five senses. What you accumulate can be yours, but it can never be you... You are trying to live your life through what you have gathered, not through who you are. What's more, you are not even a hundred percent conscious of what you have gathered!"

That's what this book is about. It's about understanding your true, divine self and that everything that happens to you happens internally. Most people go through life letting external events dictate who they are and how they should feel. They spend most of their time in memories of the past or in imaginal futures, usually of a bad kind.

Instead of eating from the Tree of Life, we eat continually from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil and make judgments based on where our experience falls. The dry orange is evil. We also tend to discontinue growth and solidify over time as we acquire beliefs: "Belief is just like morality. People who believe something often think they are superior to others. All that happens the moment you believe something is that your stupidity acquires confidence." This is so true. The more I learn about something, the more I realize how ignorant I am.

"Every thought that arises in the mind has its roots in data you have already accumulated. The data may be gathered consciously or unconsciously...your intellect is perpetually immersed in the past. In such a state, nothing new is now possible. And so, the intellect loses its edge and becomes a trap." And, "The very seat of your experience is within you, but your perception is entirely outward bound."

So what is yoga and how does it help us evolve? I'll let the author answer.

"...the fundamental desire within every human being is for boundless expansion... When their longing finds conscious expression, we call this yoga."

"The science of yoga is, quite simply, the science of being in perfect alignment, in absolute harmony, in complete sync with existence...yoga is the science of creating inner situations exactly the way you want them."

"When you are in yoga, it means that in your experience, everything has become one. This is the essence of the science. This is also its deepest aim."

"Yoga is fundamentally aimed at enhancing your experience beyond the five senses."

"So in yoga, we learn to trust the body. We transform the physical body from a series of compulsions of flesh, blood, and hormones into a conscious process, a powerful instrument of perception and knowing."

"The entire yogic process is aimed at aligning oneself with the natural longing of life to expand in an unlimited way... Yoga means to experience the mental and physical process distinctly, not as the basis of yourself, but as that which is caused by you."

"So the quality of your life is always decided by how you experience life, not by what life offers you."

"The yogic practices, which involve postures, breath, attitudes of mind, and energy activation, are all essentially oriented toward aligning the first three layers of the body: the physical, the mental, and the energetic body. It is only in aligning them that you find access to dimensions beyond the physical--to the fundamental life energy itself."

Two years ago I basically hit rock bottom. Life seemed ridiculous and futile. I knew I had to do something or I would have to leave the planet. I didn't want to be here. So I began studying New Thought writings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. I spent hours every day studying, meditating, thinking, disciplining my mind. I changed my negative thoughts into positive thoughts. I transformed myself, and I continue because I have a long way to go. I used to look back on my life and think, "What a crappy life I chose." Now I look back and think of all the challenges I have overcome and the many lessons I've learned through this difficult life. I learned to become happy.

Spiritual evolution is a discipline of learning about yourself. It takes time and effort. It is not acquiring a set of beliefs or attaching ourselves to doctrines. As Neville Goddard said, "The true test of religion is in its use, but men have made it a thing to defend."

The first time I read this book I loved it, but I couldn't review it. It was all a jumble. Too much information. Then I read it again, and still, a jumble. How do I review this? Then again, and this time I paid attention to the chapter titles to orient myself, and it took better form in my mind. Inner Engineering is not a book to be read once and set aside. It is a book to be studied, especially for someone new to the path. The keys to the kingdom are in here, but you have to recognize and wade through your own preconceptions, judgments, beliefs, and preferences.

I highly recommend this book. There's far greater treasure in here than first appears. The exercises themselves could take years to practice. And I finally understand the physical practice of yoga and how it can be used to evolve. I will leave you with one more gem that spoke to me:

"Unfortunately, most human beings are doing much the same thing: they are labeling their compulsions, their limitations, as their choices. If you can joyfully do whatever is needed in a given situation, this is freedom. But limiting yourself to doing only what you like is a horribly compulsive way to live." I choose freedom. Time to clean the bathroom. Joyfully.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well conceived, fluidly written and easy to read, with a few elements which stretch belief
Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2016

[...]
Sadhguru wants to be a “dispeller of darkness.” He believes that living joyfully is not “magical” but can be done systematically, like an engineering problem. He has written the book in two parts–first he describes the landscape and then he lays out a route on how to get there.

The description of the landscape is from a perspective of personal experience. He describes how he developed as a highly curious and observant person. The first step is to know that you know nothing or very little. That opens the door to really knowing anything. He was not a disciplined student, except towards his yoga routine. He did well in a couple of businesses he started and was feeling quite confident and successful. Then one day when he was twenty five, he was heart broken, and went up on a hill to contemplate. There he was enlightened in an afternoon of reverie and dropped all that was “me and mine.” He saw all boundaries melt away. This experience transformed him physically–even the shape of his eyes, his gait. People started getting cured just by seeing him. He himself felt that he had supernatural powers. He gained many lifetimes of memory and became aware of a “million things.” He decided to go beyond the rational and logical and embrace the “intelligence of life itself.”

He realized that goal of all human endeavor is to liberate itself of boundaries. We all want to be in a state of pleasantness. Pleasantness comes from whatever we lack at that time. If you are hungry, food is what you need, if you are tired, then a comfortable bed is what you need. When we are love lorn, we need our beloved to be with us. But after all these needs are met, we still need to expand ourselves more. Therefore, the ultimate goal is to transcend all boundaries. And this feeling can only come from how we experience the world around us, not only from how comfortable is the physical world. All experience is ultimately inside of us.

Sadhguru wants people to not take refuge in destiny or karma. He wants people to have “responsibility–ability to respond to situations.” Not react compulsively, but to respond consciously. And your ability to respond is limitless. Your ability to act is limited by resources and capability, but not the ability to respond.

And how should one respond? By being in total sync with existence. Align your physical body, your mind and your energies totally to existence and that will lead to liberation and pure joy.

---

In the second part of the book, Sadhguru lays out a path to improve the body, mind and our energies. Body is improved by doing the physical asanas, keeping our spine erect, and slowing down our breath.

  1. Body is nourished by food, which he recommends should be vegetarian or at most fish, no higher animals.
  2. Sleep and sex are basic needs of the body and should be met so the body is at peace. It creates problems when you deny or moralize basic human drives.
  3. When it comes to mind, the essential step is realizing the difference between you and what you have accumulated. Sadhguru recommends to learn to keep your intellect in awareness, not in memory.

There is one energy which manifests itself as everything. Kriya is the way to channel energies. But this can only happen when you are initiated by someone. This is where he talks about his Shambhavi Mahamudra which is taught in the Inner Engineering courses.
Overall, the book is an easy read, filled with entertaining anecdotes which begin “Once it happened….” Those of you who have watched him live or seen his YouTube videos know that he has an easy conversational style which is engaging and refreshing. This comes through in the book as well.

While the thoughts and discussion he presents are mostly in line with “Analytical Faith”, there are a few areas where he strains belief. For example, where he describes the power of breath. He says, “Slow it down to nine breaths–we know the language of all creatures, slow it to six you know the language of earth, reduce it to three and you know the language of creation.” He also claims power to heal himself and others. If is through a better understanding of your body and mind, it makes sense, but if it is through some deep kriya beyond the operation of body and mind, then it is “magic” and not engineering.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book For Reconstruction. (Read before you buy)Reviewed in India on February 14, 2019
--

For me many things were understood.
I'm mentioning just a few here.

The book is in two parts, the first is more of theory about Sadhguru himself, what well-being is, what responsibility is and what it is not, and what yoga is. Through these chapters many concepts are broken down and redefined for me. This part of the book sets the foundation for the second half of the book - the more practical aspect.

In the second half, Sadhguru explains the body, mind, our energy in fair amount of detail, but in a simple and witty manner, I was just flowing with it!

What struck me most was how we as humans have focused so much on our discerning intellect (which divide, categorizes, and dissects), that it's expression is found in the way we as a society discriminate, divide, and dissect almost everything; the most painful one according to me being the division of people into various groups which are then discriminated against.

In this second half, Sadhguru gives us many Sadhanas (or tools or practices) that we can do. Even if we choose one of these and practise in a consistent manner, it will be very beneficial for one's well-being.

Finally, the line which summarizes Sadhguru's message, according to me is this: "Yoga is not about being superhuman; it's about realizing that being human is super". This beautiful sentence encapsulates the message what we as healers do our best to spread among all that we come across.

I highly recommend this book to you all, it is a very good primer to start your journey of going within.

If this make any change in you. Vote "Helpful" & I may come with another reviews.

4.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful engineering with occult climax...Reviewed in India on November 28, 2018

Inner Engineering by Sadhguru...

Sadhguru talks about three important things which controls our thoughts and emotions in life... Those are *Body, *Mind, & *Energy...

*Body : Sadhguru says...

Body is the only thing that is visible and can easily controlled... Every human being has 5 senses i.e., 1) Touch, 2) Sight, 3) hearing, 4) Taste, and 5) Smell... If these 5 senses stops working then it is hard for one to realize actually what and who you are... So, these 5 senses plays a important role in life... and hence one should maintain them very well...
one must gain focus & control over these senses or else it will impact on one's Mind and Energy...

*Mind : Sadhguru says...

(Sadhguru) Shares and very interesting and funny story of A man wants to acquire Supernatural powers from a Spiritual guru... (pl. read the book for the story)
What ever you input to your brain the same output it gives... if you input positive thoughts only positive will be outcome... and vice versa...

*Energy : Sadhguru says...

If one uses energy in right direction it gives benefit and if one uses it in wrong direction one will suffer... Here Sadhguru treated Energy as Karma... and said If one do good to others the same will return to him/her... and vice versa...

The best part of the book is in Sadhana : A small exercise which helps one to do meditation... and there are bunch of sadhanas shared in this book...

My thoughts : If you are a follower of Sadhguru, then you like this book, If you are not, then I don't recommend this book to you... (Now this is totally subjective), Because at the last chapter Sadhguru talks about occult powers which I personally Didn't like, apart from that, this book is OK and pl. don't buy this book with full expectations... you may get disappointed).

I don't recommend this book to every one but only to sadhguru followers... and do recommend following books to read...

* Life's Amazing secrets - Gaur Gopal Das
* The power of Now - Eckhart Tolle
* Think and grow rich - Napoleon Hill
* The power of subconscious mind - Joseph Murphy
* Jonathan Livingston seagull - Richard Bach

5.0 out of 5 stars The Teacher comes when the student is readyReviewed in the United Kingdom on March 29, 2018

I have practiced Hatha Yoga since 1972 and practiced meditation since 2005. During this time I have also ready many books, many of which were a disappointment, and have gradually become aware of the Spiritual Path we are all able to follow. Several months ago I listened to a talk given by Sadhguru to the Oxford Union and was fascinated by his words. This led to my watching and listening to a number of talks and interviews which in turn led me to his book, 'Inner Engineering'.

For me this book tied together a number of loose ends in my knowledge and understanding of being a spiritual person and as my title suggests, it came at the right time. I found the book to be very informative and easy to read and understand. The writers spirituality, knowledge and humour shine throughout this book and I look forward to putting into practice some of the things I have learnt.

I bought this book to compliment the online Inner Engineering course I took, which I highly recommend. I cannot praise Sadhguru enough. This man talks complete sense. After taking the course and reading the book I am completely off my anxiety medication and I now see the world in a different and joyous way. As he often says "the only way out is in". I am sure the world would be a better place to live if everyone read this.
