What is Unitarian Universalism?

NSWER

Unitarian Universalism is a fairly small, yet widely influential, religious group. Having some 300,000 registered members, mostly in the United States, they are becoming more and more popular. Relativism, tolerance, and alternative lifestyles are all buzz words used by Unitarian Universalism.

The Unitarian Universalist name comes from their denial of the doctrine of the Trinity and their belief that all human beings gain salvation. According to Universalists, the mere idea someone might go to hell is not compatible with the character of a loving God. Its roots go all the way back to the sixteenth century when Unitarian beliefs became popular during the Reformation. Unitarian thought and Universal thought were merged together during the late eighteenth-century in America during the Age of Reason. The intellectual elite of that time refused to believe in such biblical teachings as total depravity and eternal damnation, but rather embraced the idea of a loving God who would never cause someone to suffer.

Adherents of Unitarian Universalism base their beliefs primarily upon their own experiences and are not committed to any one religious system. They believe that individuals have the right to decide for themselves what to believe in and that others should not infringe upon this right. As a result, one such believer might lean toward liberal Christianity, while another might lean toward New Age spirituality. There is no real dogma beyond tolerance—for everything except biblical Christianity. Unitarian Universalists view the Bible as a book of poetry, myth, and moral teaching, a completely human book and not truly the Word of God. They reject the Bible’s portrayal of a Triune God, leaving the concept of God up to each individual’s imagination.

To the Unitarian Universalist, Jesus was a good moral teacher, but nothing more. He is not considered to be divine, and every miracle associated with Him is rejected as being outside of human reason. Most sayings of Jesus recorded in the Bible are regarded as embellishments on the part of the authors. Among the Universalist beliefs: Jesus did not die to save mankind from sin, as man is not a fallen sinner; emphasis is placed on humankind’s capacity for goodness; sin is completely relative, and the term itself is rarely used; man saves himself through personal improvement, salvation being a purely worldly experience, a "waking up" to the world around oneself. This is very important, for death is final. Most Unitarian Universalists deny the existence of an afterlife, so all we have on earth is all we’ll ever get.

The Bible, on the other hand, refutes these falsehoods. Jesus does save mankind, which was in a fallen state since the Garden of Eden and separated from God by sin (John 10:15Romans 3:24-255:81 Peter 2:24).

Man is not good, but sinful and hopelessly lost. It is only through the grace of God and faith in the shed blood of Christ on the cross that mankind can be reconciled to a holy, transcendent God (Genesis 2:16-173:1-19); John 3:36Romans 3:231 Corinthians 2:14Ephesians 2:1-31 Timothy 2:13-141 John 1:8).

Unitarian Universalism has nothing in common with biblical Christianity. It is a false gospel, its teachings are contrary to the Bible, and its members strongly oppose traditional, biblical Christian beliefs (while purporting to be free of discrimination or prejudice of any kind). The Bible clearly refutes Unitarian Universalism on all the major points of its teachings.

What is the Unity Church / Unity School of Christianity?

Unity Church, Unity School of Christianityaudio
ANSWER

Unity is an organization related to the New Thought movement. It was formerly called Unity Church (or Unity School) of Christianity. It is not to be confused with Unitarian Universalism or Christian Science, although they have many beliefs in common. Unity has its headquarters at Unity Village, near Kansas City, Missouri.
From their own website: "The Unity movement was founded by Charles and Myrtle Fillmore in 1889 as a healing ministry based on the power of prayer and the power of our thoughts to create our own reality. The Fillmores regarded Jesus as the great example rather than the great exception; interpreted the Bible metaphysically; and taught that God is present within all of us."

There are approximately 110,000 members in over 300 Unity churches. It is one of the largest metaphysical groups in the United States, and its magazine, Daily Word, has millions of readers.

The Unity Church got its start through an illness. Myrtle had developed tuberculosis and was searching for anything that would heal her. After attending a lecture by Dr. Eugene Weeks, a disciple of Quimby’s New Thought teachings, she learned about metaphysical healing. Two years after this lecture, and after much research and personal application of metaphysics, she claims she was healed. Her husband, while skeptical at first, began to study metaphysics also, as well as other religions and philosophies.

What emerged was the Unity School of Christianity, named after Charles heard a voice say to him, "Unity." This name was appropriate, as the Fillmores' religious philosophy was a mix of New Thought, Christian Science, Divine Science, Hinduism, Theosophy, Rosicrucianism, Spiritualism, etc. To quote Charles, they "borrowed the best from all religions." Excited by Myrtle’s healing and by the knowledge they had recently acquired, they began holding meetings to teach others their new theology.

The Unity Church claims that, through adherence to its teachings, people can be happier and healthier and can achieve their divine potential.
Although it calls itself Christian, there is much that separates the Unity movement from true, biblical Christianity
Their website states that "Unity is an open-minded, accepting spiritual community that honors all paths to God and helps people discover and live their spiritual potential and purpose."
They claim to follow the teachings of Jesus, but their self-definition contradicts this because Jesus said, "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No man comes to the Father, but by Me" (John 14:6).
Jesus did not honor any other path to God but Himself (John 3:16-1810:7-13). Acts 4:12 says, "And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved."

The following is a brief explanation of some of the ways Unity beliefs are in conflict with true Christianity:

God: Unity considers God as an idea or a power, rather than a Person. Scripture paints the opposite picture. From Genesis to Revelation, God presents Himself as a Father (Matthew 5:16), Creator (Isaiah 43:15), Provider (Philippians 4:19), and Healer (Exodus 15:26Deuteronomy 32:39). He exhibits the personality and traits of a Person. He speaks (Job 2:2Acts 22:10), feels (Judges 2:20), loves (Psalm 37:28), sings (Zephaniah 3:17), fights (Exodus 14:14), and delights in those who love Him (Psalm 37:23).

Jesus: The Unity website says this about Jesus: "We believe that Jesus expressed his divine potential and sought to show humankind how to express ours as well. We see Jesus as a master teacher of universal truths and as our Way Shower. In Unity, we use the term Christ to mean the divinity in humankind." The Bible teaches that Jesus was "the only begotten Son of the Father" (1 John 4:9). He did not "possess a divine Spark"; He was the Word become flesh (John 1:1Philippians 2:5-11). He accepted worship, which only God can righteously do (Matthew 2:11John 9:3820:28Hebrews 1:6). His purpose was not "to express his divine potential and seek to show humankind how to express ours." He said the night before His crucifixion that "it was for this very reason I came to this hour" (John 12:27). If Jesus came to show us how to "live our divinity," why did He state that His death on the cross was the reason He came?

Humanity: Unity teaches that "our essential nature is divine and therefore inherently good. Our purpose is to express our divine potential as realized and demonstrated by Jesus and other master teachers." This is directly contrary to biblical teaching. Romans 3:10 says, "There is none righteous, no not one." Titus 3:5 says, "He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy." Romans 5:12 states clearly that we are not born good: "Death spread to all men because all sinned." Verses 9 and 10 say that we were under the “wrath of God” and that “we were enemies” of God. The Bible is clear that man is inherently sinful and cannot attain righteousness by his own efforts. Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection paid for our sin and purchased a way for us to be reconciled to God. C. S. Lewis summarized the truth about Jesus when he wrote, "You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.”

Heaven and hell: The Unity site declares that "heaven and hell are states of consciousness, not geographical locations. We make our own heaven or hell here and now by our thoughts, words, and deeds." However, Jesus said, "This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth" (Matthew 13:49-50). The apostle Paul spoke of being "absent from the body and present with the Lord" (2 Corinthians 5:8-10). Hebrews 9:27 is clear that "it is appointed unto man once to die and after that, the judgment." Jesus showed us exactly what happens after death in the story of the rich man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31). It is impossible to read the Bible honestly and not see the themes of eternal life and judgment.

The Bible: The Unity site claims that "the Bible is Unity’s basic textbook." But this statement is deceptive. Judging by their many erroneous doctrines, Unity does not view the Bible as infallible or literal. The founders of Unity saw the Bible "as history and allegory and interpreted it as a metaphysical representation of humankind’s evolutionary journey toward spiritual awakening." They claim to consider it inspired, but they clearly believe that inspiration did not come from a perfect, unchangeable God (Numbers 23:19Hebrews 13:8James 1:17). The term inspired appears to refer to human inspiration rather than “God-breathed” (2 Timothy 3:16).

The Unity movement cannot be accurately described as a "church." The term in Scripture always refers to a body of believers, saved through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ (Matthew 16:16-18).

Since “faith in Christ” means something entirely different in the Unity organization, their doctrine does not lead to salvation, heaven, or a relationship with the true and living God.

Such pseudo-Christian religions are far from harmless.

Any group that denies the triune nature of God (Matthew 28:19), the depravity of man (Romans 3:23), the infallibility of Scripture (John 17:17), and the deity and lordship of Jesus Christ (Philippians 2:11) is not of God.

The Bible has strong words for those who pervert its teaching.

Galatians 1:7-8 says, "There are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed." Proverbs 14:12 also applies to groups like Unity: "There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death."

unity--Universal oneness of Godman, and all creation

  • The only real unity is in Spirit
  • It is found nowhere else because personality always strives for its own success and aims for the good of the personal man, instead of the good of all men.
  • Man makes conscious unity with God first at the center of spirituality, this center having its basis of action in the top of the head
  • The only way to establish unity with the Father-Mind is by prayer.
  • God's name is I AM. Our name is I AM
  • Speaking this name in the silence, recognizing that it is God's name and ours, we establish conscious unity with Him.

Spirituality Before Religions: Spirituality is Unseen Science...Science is Seen Spirituality 18/07/2019
by Kaba Hiawatha Kamene
( 2,066 )
$10.70

Spirituality Before Religions, delves deeply into many ideas researched by many brilliant writers and scholars. My ultimate purpose is to synthesize these writings into a comprehensive study of ancient African Deep Thought with Tep Heseb, the Kemetic (Egyptian) process of accurately reckoning by using the correct method of analysis. This clear and concise philosophy guided early humanity into the heavens on earth, while creating a heaven on earth.
African educator, Dr. John Henrik Clarke teaches us that to be self-sufficient, people have to see the Creator when they look in the mirror. If not, they will never have a healthy “self-concept.” He reminds us,
“Anytime you turn on your own concept of God, you are no longer a free man or woman. No one needs to put chains on your body, because the chains are on your mind. Anytime someone says their God is ugly and they release their God and embraces someone else’s God, there is no hope for their freedom until they once more believe in their own concept of the Deity.”1
Dr. Alvin Boyd Kuhn says,
“No matter how emotionally, how fanatically the worshipper pours out adoration to a person in objective life, the work of his own evolution is not accomplished until he effectuates the ultimate divinization of the nuclear potentiality of deific fire within his own self-controlled area of consciousness”
Dr. Kuhn continues his thought,
“The balanced forces of human uplift would be thrown into immediate chaos if it were in the end possible for a man to achieve his apotheosization (deification of a person) vicariously, or in any other way than through his own effort. Man was provided from the start with the presence of a unit of divine fire within the heart of his own way to the goal of glory. All efforts are driven towards the cultivation of the God within man.”
These are the main points I will make in Spirituality Before Religions: Spirituality is Unseen Science, Science is Seen Spirituality.
Tep Heseb is a major Kemetic (Egyptian) concept that can be interpreted to mean, “An Accurate Reckoning by Using the Correct Method.” We must analyze the Kemetic (Egyptian) writings by using the method applied by Africans for Africans in Africa.
There are Two (2) Laws of Cosmic Spirituality
1st Law – Love and Respect the Creator within you; know you are the Creator
having a human experience.
2nd Law– Love and Respect the Creator in Nature the same way you love the
Creator within yourself.
The purpose of “Spirituality Before Religions,” is to demonstrate that humanity’s earliest ideas about spirituality originated in the minds of human beings conceived, born, nurtured, sustained, educated and civilized in the Great Lakes Region in Central/East/South Africa. The Great Lakes Region includes countries we today call Kenya, Uganda, Tanganyika, Congo, and Southern Africa. After these ancient scholars perfected their worldview, they then traveled north, south, east, and west along ancient river systems, developing civilizations in harmony with Nature on the African continent. Over time, they explored the Earth and laid the foundations for all other ethnic stocks and cultures world-wide.
As we enter into the Age of Aquarius, we must recognize that it is the Age of the Feminine Principle. There is an indirect and direct relationship between Black Holes, Worm Holes and White Holes in the Cosmos with the Womb of the WombedMan. Black Holes can be compared to the Placenta connected to the mother’s uterine wall, that attracts, captures and sends life through the Umbilical cord that sustains the fetus, through the navel connection.
The future wealth of the earth is going to be Solar Power.

Shabaka's Stone For Children: An African Star Story 12/11/2022
by Kaba Hiawatha Kamene
( 5 )
$11.99

Somewhere around 710 years before the common era (BCE), Neset Bity (Pharaoh) Shabaka directed his scientists and scholars to rewrite the work of their ancestors titled, “The Memphite Theology.” This ancient creation story was written on either papyrus or leather and had been damaged by time and climate. King Shabaka had the Memphite Theology carved on black basalt stone and the story tells a metaphoric drama that outlined the coming into being and continuing process of becoming of the cosmic universe. They enhanced this process by comparing and contrasting the pattern in all living things in the cosmos and on earth. The ancient African scholars who studied and taught biology, made comparisons to the development of the divine human embryo. Other scholars in different subject areas made the same comparisons with this cosmic allegory.

Shabaka’s Stone: An African Theory on the Origin and Continuing Development of the Cosmic Universe 18/03/2021
by Kaba Hiawatha Kamene
( 316 )
$10.01

Shabaka’s Stone explores and explains many scientific theories on multi-dimensional levels.

Shabaka’s Stone tells us that we are born with everything we need to solve all of our life’s challenges. Every human is born with a Messiah (Asar/Heru) and a Judas (Seten). Judas’ job is to stop us from achieving our divine purpose. The Messiah’s responsibility is to make sure that Judas is not successful. Life is the result of the balance of this relationship. The Messiah may fall down nine (9) times, but rises ten (10) times. The metaphor of the Asarian Drama. We are the Creator having a human experience.

The Nun wanted to come into being. He/She tried countless times. Finally, one of her/his attempts succeeded and Ptah came forward and created Atum. Atum was consciousness and named all and every thing. This trinity began the beginning of time and continues to become to this day. Every day, when you wake up is like Ptah rising out of the Nun (state of unconscious). This energy conversion, waking you up initiates your simple and self-conscious state of thinking, realizing who you are coming up out of your sleep.

My journey of Self Knowledge began over a decade ago. I could not possibly enumerate the multitude of lectures, articles, and books I've read on that journey. This book is without a doubt among the absolute finest. I expected some dissemination of theological knowledge with complimentary philosophy pertaining to the ancient African's idea of religion. What I got was an intermingling of those themes along with historical data, a plethora of references and reference material that was wonderfully expansive, and extremely elucidating. This is an extremely well written, well researched tome which is as dense as lead (very little fluff to speak of). I now understand ancient African history as well as their spirituality better than I'd ever hoped before reading this most wonderful book. If you are black, and on the journey of Self Knowledge like me, Spirituality Before Religions is an absolutely essential stop. Hotep, and good reading.

I recently began reading The History of the first council of Nice by Dean Dudley but felt I needed to back up a bit. Brother Kaba's book has filled in a lot of holes and I have only finished the 2nd Chapter. It's an amazing piece of literature and Kaba did a great job of adding reputable scholars. I have heard many of his lectures so I knew some of his views on the subject. I can't wait to finish this book as there is so much History I don't know.

I saw a YouTube video featuring Kaba Hiawatha Kamene. Because of his profound teachings and spiritual insight, I decided to buy his book. "Spirituality Before Religions: Spirituality is Unseen Science...Science is Seen Spirituality" blew my mind on a deeper level. Since I couldn't put it down, I read this book within a week. Professor Kamene's book was easy to read and didn't appear to try to impress his audience with his intellectualism. In order for the audience to comprehend the material, the book was written in layman's terms. I learned a lot from this book. For example, I had no idea the Spirit of Ma'at was centered on mathematics. Ma'at referred to mathematics. Professor Kamene explained the deep significance of the Age of Aquarius to me.

This was the book for anyone looking for deep and profound spiritual knowledge and information. You wouldn't regret purchasing this book.

I like how we evolved as human beings, from it being just living organisms in the water and land. I see how there's some truth in lies when it comes to knowing the difference of an ape, or gorilla, or "homoapiens" - probably not saying that right. But according to America they say we came from apes when really, that is impossible when we came from the birth of our human-mothers from a human father. I like how the umbilical cord represents a plug for the baby to stay alive in the womb. I didn't know it has a vein in it and helps the baby breath oxygen, through its organs and give it blood supply. It explains to me why babies end up having to stay for a while at the hospital because the umbilical cord been cut off.

This rendition by Kaba Hiawatha Kemene is one of the first books that one should read to learn some Truth backed with reliable references. I will use Kaba's metaphor of a slingshot to describe my journey when I read Spirituality Before Religions: Spirituality is Unseen Science...Science is Seen Spirituality. In order to propel your knowledge to a higher level, you have to physically pull the slingshot back as far as possible. Upon release of the energy contained from contracting the slingshot, you propel an object much farther. The object in this case is your knowledge of where and how you originated and maybe why you do and say the things that you say.

Spirituality before Religions is a book for people who are interested in the earliest formations of spiritual thought and practise by humans. It takes you on a linear journey through the scientific and theological beginnings of the universe, to the creation of Earth and life on this magical planet. Think Brian Cox meets, David Attenborough meets, Wakanda 🙅🏾‍♀️.

Solely focused on Africa and in particular ancient Kemet (Egypt) and the original peoples that formed this civilisation. At the heart of their spiritual understanding and practise was nature, "...the hidden and revealed forces of the nature of agriculture, became the basis for humanity's wisdom of the cycle of spiritual growth and ascension." I found this to be quite pertinent considering our current "sustainability" era. It was also quite interesting to know that the sun was the first entity to be worshipped. "Africans worshipped the life-giving energies that emanated from the sun, not the celestial body." Which makes sense when you think about the impact and subsequent formation of life from the sun's light, sound and heat energy here on Earth.

If like me, you love ancient Egyptian history, this book will not disappoint! It breaks down who the original people were, their dynasties, the invasions and worldwide influence of this rich African culture. A well researched, excellent body of work by the amazing Professor Kaba Kamene.

It's consolidated my understanding of African spirituality and has allowed me to link Kemitic/Egyptian spirituality or maat to other spiritual systems in Africa.

Spirituality Before Religions: Spirituality is Unseen Science...Science is Seen Spirituality

Kaba Hiawatha Kamene

Prepare to. be Enlightened

I enjoyed reading this books. The concepts this book introduced were very enlighting. I liked how it married spiritual concepts to scienctific concepts. These ideals are circular in theory because they all exists on an equal plane. The book is a lot to digest and should be read more than once to truly understand the material presented. I could highly recommend this book to enlighten yourself on the intergrual knowledge of the Ancient Africa.

Im kinda scared to do a pre review on this work but I did purchase the right to do so.

So far I'm not a fan of his style of righting however it is on point (mostly so far it is accurate) I however i am a big fan of his lectures!

So far I have read most of the works he gathered from other people and I keep my Dictionary and computer open and Fired up with every page.

I probably will be changing my post review later on after finishing the book but as it stands for now it feels like a re read of everything I have read, I can say that for those whom never read many other works you are mostly in for a big treat! And I will also say yes! His work is 100% accurate as far as what I have read.

This book was very enlightening. I learned so much from this book, things you don’t learn in history class. Reading this also realized how much unlearning we have to do as well. This book isn’t heavy but it’s rich with information which can make it difficult to understand sometimes. That’s why it took me months to complete. I wanted to take my time to soak all this rich history in. I love the Appendixes, it helped a lot. Good read, you just have to be in the right mental capacity.

This book discusses the origin of religion and existence. It will demonstrate the elementary foundation of most religious practices, and it will challenge us to explore our spirituality outside of religion. It also did an excellent job connecting science to spirituality.

The great detail and knowledge make this book a must read. The principles of Ma'at and the history of how many and most religion gleaned and stole from African spirituality is mund blowing.
