In the best-selling companion volume to the PBS series, acclaimed television journalist Bill Moyers explores the fascinating, complex, powerful connection between mind and body in human health. Ancient medical science told us our minds and bodies are one. So did philosophers of old. Now, modern science and new research are helping us to understand these connections.

In Healing and the Mind, Bill Moyers talks with physicians, scientists, therapists, and patients - people who are taking a new look at the meaning of sickness and health. In a series of fascinating and provocative interviews, he discusses their search for answers to perplexing questions: How do emotions translate into chemicals in our bodies? How do thoughts and feelings influence health? How can we collaborate with our bodies to encourage healing?

With the incisive style that has made Bill Moyers's skills as an interviewer legendary, Healing and the Mind is destined to influence how America thinks about sickness and health.

Full -color and B & W photographs throughout.

The content of this book is a series of interviews with Moyers and top Professionals in the Medical field. Moyers asks very relevant questions from a skeptical position, the Medical Professional answer is informative as well as fascinating. You can see how the Medical Profession is beginning to change its line of thinking with regards to healing the complete aspect of the Patient, not just the symptoms of the illness or disease.

The human being is a complex mixture of emotions and statistics. In fact the Doctors are realizing they are also members of the human race. All this goes into the mix of a new era of caring being introduced today that benefits both the Doctor and the Patient.

Excellent reading.

I had the cassette set in the late 90s. I thought it was excellent and loaned it to someone. Well you know how that goes...couldn't remember who I loaned it to. Since I couldn't find an audio version I ordered the book. A friend saw my copy and wanted it as well so I gave it to her and ordered another for myself. It's an excellent read and I highly recommend it. In addition to a high recommendation I was very impressed by the quick service by the vendor and the used paperback was in excellent condition.

I found the cassette format difficult at best to enjoy due to the foreign language discussions throughout. I am sure that authenticity was the goal for Moyers, but I would rather have not had my time wasted on not understanding words and would have rather enjoyed the tapes entirely in English with editing done. Have you ever tried to drive and constantly push the fast forward button on the radio/cassette player? The book would have been better for me.

This might be as much an eye opener for the novice as it was for me, a qualified Tai Chi instructor. Highly recommend the read which does a great job of explaining the differences between Eastern and Western medicine and then examples of how beautiful they are when properly blended together!

Bill Moyers is thorough and communicates well for anyone to be able to explain his explorations. It is the quality that made him an impressive success for all these years. As a resident of east Texas near to his birth place in Marshall, I firmly believe that he is "the best" to ever come out of this state when it comes to intelligence and the ability to communicate knowledge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal!!!!!!!

I am a rheumatologist hoping to get more information about holistic and natural methods that my arthritis patients care about since they mention turmeric and the anti-inflammatory diet quite often. I thought this was just going to be a book about supplements and acupuncture... but it's so much more!!! It describes how a whole-health relationship with a patient should be in the contemporary healthcare era and what a healing relationship really means.

The book discusses things that I was previously working on, like shared-decision making and trying to see from the point of view of the patient's culture and belief system, but it really solidified these ideas, made them more concrete, and elevated them to a practice that I aspire to and will work towards. And yes, it does also discuss holistic, natural, complementary, and alternative medicine in thorough detail for every specialty. I would recommend this book to anyone!!!

A European Medical Device Debuts in this Landmark Book

The section in this book contributed by Sunil Pai, MD is excellent as it shares a European Medical device which I believe everyone should learn about because in my opinion this technology is truly the missing link in both Western medicine and alternative. I have been using this device personally and sharing information about it with my clients now for 5 years and feel it offers the cutting edge in the new frontier of electroceutical technology. Now when I pay this device forward to my clients I am delighted to share and recommend this amazing book to not only offer Dr. Pai's contribution about it but also point out that this device will help everything else offered in the book to work more efficiently to help the body heal itself.

I believe this book belongs on every physicians desk bookmarked to Dr. Pai's chapter.

At a time when conventional medicine is sending so many patients into bankruptcy, this text is evidence that empowering patients to participate in their own recovery is key. I look forward to insurance companies including integrative therapies in their covered treatments!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good suggestions and pointers as to how and where to start your own spiritual path.Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 28 November 2014

This book is about the author’s pathways to his own spiritual awakening. However, he gives the reader a lot of options, suggestions and pointers as to how and where to start his or her own spiritual path. Now, if you want to follow his footsteps you will need a very considerable amount of money to travel around the globe and work with masters and gurus around the world and learn all kinds of spiritual practices.

But, if you really want to start walking the path of your own spiritual awakening and don’t have many resources at the time being, you can start reading books on the subject, there are many wonderful authors out there regarding this subject. You can join a local group that shares your interests, learn to meditate, get involved in some of your community activities. Sooner than later you’ll find yourself working on your spiritual life without much effort. Although it does take discipline and patience to walk that path, because your ego will fight back when you try to silence it.

They say that when you are ready the teacher shows up, and I know this for a fact. There is no right or wrong path, it’s only important that it’s your own path and that it feels right walking it. Just choose your spiritual adviser wisely. Like the author says, no matter how many degrees or credentials a person has, if you have a “bad feeling” you should walk away. Not all paths are for everyone, you have to find your own. Not all guides are fit for us all, we each have to find our own mentor and guru. But I personally think that it’s important if not imperative that we work in our spirituality to heal humanity and the planet as a whole.

This book was recommended by a friend who is Hindu in her religious orientation. I am a Christian with Buddhist sensibilities, if you will, finding new insights in the Gnostic gospels that open the door to a better understanding of the core message of Jesus Christ. This book shows us what we all have in common while warning us of the pitfalls of taking pride in our spiritual pursuits. I like what Denis Johnson wrote in "Tree of Smoke": "There is only one God, but He has many administrations." "Return to the Sacred" shows us how true this is. If there ever is going to be a harmonious human civilization on this planet, we must return to the basic spiritual teachings of our ancestors while rejecting the claims of organized religions which is precisely what fuels many of the world's conflicts. If we truly understand the Scriptures, we can then transcend the economic and political trappings (which cloak themselves often in religious garb) that reduce humankind to the level of tribal beasts. Love your neighbor, love God...it's that simple! Peace be with you all.

This book explains it all. I too, have researched and practised many spiritual pathways and could relate to the content exceptionally well. From time to time I have changed paths but basically kept coming back to what I find best suits my needs. This is what I tell people who ask me what is the best meditation. I always say...the one that suits you best and you will feel comforatble in using on a daily basis. There are so many subtle changes in my attitude over the years, that sometimes it takes others to point them out to me. This author spelt out to me that all I am doing is OK and to continue to take resposibility for my own actions and show kindness to my self and others. I enjoyed it immensely.

The author's many experiences shows that there is no "one way" to awaken the spirit, and it does not always come from the things that we think will awaken it. Awakening the spirit is just the start of the journey though, not the end so every experience builds on those that came before giving new understandings and insights. Again, having the insights is not enough - you have to then take action and make them part of who you are. Some insights are small and some can change who we are in an instant.
I found this book a good reminder to keep up a spiritual practice of some sort - sometimes it can be something big, sometimes just as small as a daily prayer to (insert chosen recipient here), to act as a constant reminder of our true nature.

I did not know that "spiritual adventure book" is a genre, but that's what Jonathan has brought us here. His stories depicting various spiritual practices are truly engaging.

The overall structure of the book is truly helpful, outlining various types of spiritual practice, the details of which can be nonsectarian or specific to one's faith tradition. This book is suitable for a range of individuals, from a spiritual practitioner who feels stuck and is looking for something new to a seeker who doesn't know where to begin.

I found the last chapters to be most encouraging personally. Even when specific spiritual practices seem difficult to fit into the daily "time budget", living in one's own integrity, with compassion and intention, is truly its own spiritual practice.

I finished this a while back but forgot to tell GoodReads. Haha. I absolutely loved it with my entire sacred soul. This is a book that I could read over and over again. It resonates on such a deep level. Heck, I think I might even try to get in touch with the author who is from Manitoba and got a degree in my hometown of Regina just to thank him for this beautiful book. He feels like a beautiful, wise, kindred spirit.

Interesting premise, annoying execution. The author writes from a place of EXTREME privilege, loves name dropping, and his tone is often a little condescending. That said, the 12 spiritual paths he discusses are fascinating, and I appreciate how he introduces them, shares different options along each, and doesn’t seem to favor one over the other. I rolled my eyes a lot, but I learned enough to make the eye rolling worth it.

Obviously not a person who grew up with poverty and lives in poverty or understands it.
I've never had the money for a passport, let-alone the money to be joining yoga classes and such.
I got tired of reading about his trips all over the place. As someone who is ill and has been, over all, a lot house bound over my life I can't relate at all to this. He needed to encourage those who are unable to go out and join classes. If you can't afford to join a yoga class, and/or due to an illness, anxieties, social phobias, Agoraphobia and so on, do what you can at home. Single moms with children and someone with a family to look after, so many different situations, not everyone can be out visiting spiritual healers, herbalists, yoga classes and traveling all over, or have the means to.

I started skipping over his stories of "I went here" and "I traveled there"...really, never known anyone who could just spend life doing all this. I went through all these and found the parts I thought were of use and enjoyed those parts.
It's sad though to tell people they can't learn on their own. It discourages those who are unable to get help. I have to block that negativity out now and realize, that though I can't go out and join this and that and be social, I will continue to do the best I can home here.

Jonathan has an amazing ability to take the spiritual and bring it into everyday life and language - to take it out of the "sacrosphere" and make it comprehensible and doable. He gives you so many tools and stories and ways to think about and look at things that are just delightful ways to remind yourself to be present again and again and again. I enjoy his writings and talks so much for this. Sometimes we think that remembering the sacred in us is such a struggle in every day life, and it can be, but then there is Jonathan, sharing a technique or a small ritual that we can do, reminding us not to make it too hard, to come back to presence, to face what is and go from there.

This was an interesting read. I was looking for some ways to better incorporate my spiritual practice into my daily life and the master paths detailed in this book gave me a lot of inspiration. A bit heavy on the personal anecdotes but otherwise very informative.

We all long to experience a sense of inner wholeness and guidance, but today's notions of healing and recovery too often keep us focused on our brokenness, on our deficiencies rather than our strengths. Wayne Muller's luminous new book gently guides us to the place where we are already perfect, already blessed with the wisdom we need to live a life of meaning, purpose and grace.

He starts, as do so many spiritual teachers, with simple questions: Who am I? What do I love? How shall I live, knowing I will die? What is my gift to the family of the earth? He then takes us deeper, exploring each question through transformative true stories. We meet men and women--Wayne's neighbors, friends, patients--who have discovered love, courage, and kindness even in the midst of sorrow and loss. And through them we glimpse that relentless spark of spiritual magic that burns within each of us.

Woven throughout are contemplations, daily practices, poems, and teachings from the great wisdom teachings. Page by page, we become more awake to the joy and mystery of this precious human life, and to the unique gifts every one of us has to offer the world.

Wayne Muller has a deeply caring soul and in this book evidences a lyrical pen.
While no book can conclusively answer the question "How, Then, Shall We Live?" this book is a wonderfully readable and gentle, compassionate and evocative, exploration of some of life's ultimate issues.
Much of the book gains its power from stories of people facing death in heartbreaking yet courageous and liberating ways.
This book is good for your soul (however "soul" may be defined or experienced).
In addition to the author's own thoughts, he includes helpful exercises, and cites many inspiring and thoughtful passages from others.
This is not an analytic work that delves into complicated philosophical concepts. Instead, it touches on the simple, yet most profound, questions of life and death in the deceptive plainness of the most wise. It is food for the heart, and it rings deeply true. And, while the author seems to be a deeply spiritual man, there is nothing of a dogmatic sense about any of the writing.
Read this book; your best self will thank you!

I've bought so many of these books over the years I've lost count, because I often give it as gifts to friends. My husband and I have read it several times individually and are now reading it again together. We've also read other books by Wayne Muller. His writing flows, isn't wordy, is inspirational and has been part of my journey in life. Highly recommend "How Then Shall We Live" to anyone looking for a book that simply describes ultimately what life is all about.

How, Then, Shall We Live?
Four Simple Questions That Reveal the Beauty and Meaning of Our Lives
By Wayne Muller
Profound meditations on four essential questions which are at the center of the human journey.
Book Review by Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat

In more than 20 years of practice as a therapist and spiritual counselor, Wayne Muller has enabled people to tap the divine source within and to make use of the wisdom learned from pain. In "How, Then, Shall We Live" he focuses on four questions which are at the center of the human journey: Who am I? What do I love? How shall I live, knowing I will die? What is my gift to the family of the earth?

Muller's enlightening meditations on these questions are filled with quotations and stories from world religions. He skillfully balances inner growth with outward service as he shows how our lives can be enriched by the spiritual practices of kindness, gratefulness, giving and receiving, attention, simplicity, and remembering. "How, Then, Shall We Live" vividly and compellingly describes what a path with heart really means.
