* 사회적 차원 아닌 개인 차원에 한정해서 하는 얘기. 사회 구성원으로서 해야 하는 일은 그것대로 병행하면 됩니다. *

인간이 하는 모든 생각은 이기심나 자기방어 심리가 그 근본 동력이며 자타에게 오로지 문제만을 초래하므로 생각이라는 자체를 최소화하는 것이 미덕이라고, 특히 남을 판단하는 일은 '에고'의 '교만'일 뿐이라고 가르치는 전통들이 있다. 그러나 이런 믿음 역시 최소한 초기불교에는 잘 들어맞지 않는다.

우선, 어떤 종교들에서는 타인에게 사랑을 베푸는 것을 제1의 윤리덕목으로 삼지만, 불교는 남에게 피해나 스트레스를 끼치지 않는 것을 제1의 윤리덕목으로 삼는다. (코로나 상황에서 마스크 안 끼고 사람들 만나는 것은 불교 관점에선 용납 안 되는 일. 종교행사는 언감생심이고 그 만남의 목적이 자선활동이라 하더라도.) 그렇기에 부처님은 당신이 출가하기 전 얻은 아들이 나중에 찾아왔을 때, 행동 (생각과 말 포함) 하나 하나마다, 그 이전에 와중에 그리고 사후에, 자신이나 남에게 어떤 스트레스/피해를 초래하는지를 살핌으로써 분별력과 윤리성을 제고하라고 가르치셨다. 실수했을 때는 보다 지혜로운 사람에게 상의함으로써, 혼자 합리화/정당화하고 넘어가는 일을 삼가라고, 그래야만 실수의 재발과 자기기만을 막을 수 있다고도 하셨다 (MN 61). 글자 그대로 깨어 있는 시간동안 하는 모든 생각, 말, 행동마다 이런 성찰과 검증을 하려면 어마어마한 양의 비판적 분석적 사고를 해야 한다. (생각은 물론 空하다. 초기불교에서 이 말은, 그 '생각'이라는 도미노 효과를 일어나게 한 조건들을 이해하고 생각에 집착하지 말으라는 뜻이지, 모든 생각을 무조건 dismiss 하는 것이 능사라는 얘기는 아닌 것 - 일단 이해하고 난 후에는 때로 dismiss가 필요할 수도 있겠지만. "생각하지 말라"고 하는 건 인간이 하는 생각의 대부분이 자기합리화이기 때문인데, 탐진치 없는 생각은 실은 지혜계발에 꼭 필요하다.)

그러나 저런 성찰이나 자기객관화가 인간에겐 무척 어려운 일이기에, 그리고 실수했을 때 서로 바로잡아 주고 충고해 주는 사람이 필요하기에, 그래서 부처님은 지혜로운 사람을 가까이 하는 것이 수행에서 지극히 중요함을 기회 있을 때마다 누누이 강조하시고, 심지어 "수행의 전부!"라고까지 표현하셨다 (AN 9.1, SN 45.2, Ud 4.1). 그런 지혜로운 사람을 만나지 못 한다면 차라리 무소의 뿔처럼 혼자서 가라고 하셨으며 (Sn 1.3. 사교/친목 활동 일절 하지 말고 글자 그대로 홀로 수행하는 시간을 최대한 확보하라는 뜻), '어리석은'( =인과를 모르는) 사람들은 가까이 않는 것이 "최고의 부적"이라고도 하셨다 (Sn 2:4). 내가 잘못 했을 때 깨우쳐 주고 충고해 줄 수 있는, 내가 신뢰할 수 있을 만한 사람을 찾아 내는 일은, 타인을 늘 유심히 관찰하면서 판단력을 키워야만 가능하다. 그래서 부처님은 타인을 평가할 때 어떤 기준으로 해야 하는지 (AN 4: 192, AN 7:64, MN 110), 심지어 어떤 이가 함께 대화/토론할 만한 상대인지에 대해서도 구체적인 판단 기준을 제시하셨다 (AN 3:68).

부처님이 사람을 훈련시키는 방법은 조련사가 말을 훈련시키는 방법과 같다고 하셨으며, 배우려는 태도/준비가 떨어지는 사람을 부처님이 '버리는' (가르침을 그만두는) 일을 훈련에 반응하지 않는 말을 조련사가 죽이는 일에 비유하셨다 (AN 4:111). 배우려는 태도/준비가 떨어지는 사람을 harsh 하게 야단치시는 장면도 초기경전 곳곳에 나오는데, 누구에게나 언제나 무조건 부드럽고 따뜻하기만 할 거라는 우리의 기대와 전혀 달리 부처님은 필요한 경우엔 매우 신랄한 언어도 기꺼이 사용하셨다 (MN 22, MN 38, MN 58, MN 136). 브라만들을 개와 비교하면서 브라만들의 도덕적 타락을 신랄하게 비난하기도 하셨다 (AN 5:191). 논쟁 자체를 목적으로 하는 공부를 부처님은 경계하셨지만, 그러면서도 동시에, 특별히 위험하다 생각되는 견해들 (영혼이 있다, 인과가 없다 등)을 가르치는 이들을 부처님은 몸소 찾아다니면서 논파하셨다.

A라는 사람을 '해치는' 것은 타인이 A를 향해 사용하는 '모욕적인 언어'가 아니라 A 스스로 저지르는 불선업이므로, A의 잘못을 지적해 주는 일이야말로 진정한 자비라는 것이 초기불교의 논리. 바로 그렇기에 공동체 내의 화합도 중요하지만, 동시에, 잘못이 있는데도 안으로 곪도록 은폐하거나 외면하기보다는 함께 성장할 수 있도록 서로 정성껏 비판해 줘야 하는 것이며, 이에 대한 절차를 부처님이 율장에서 구체적으로 제시하신 것이다. (현각 스님이 혜민 스님을 비난한 것. 모르는 척 침묵을 지키는 것보다는 불교 정신에 훨씬 충실한 행동.)

이렇듯 불교 수행이라는 것은 처음부터 끝까지 평가와 판단을 필요로 한다. 불교의 관점에서 우리는 탐진치라는 불치병에 걸린 환자들이다. 살기 위해 (해탈하기 위해)서는 부처님이 남기신 의학서적을 열심히 공부해 가면서 스스로를 치료해야 한다. 이렇게 절박한 상황이니 매사 매 순간 악업을 피하고 선업을 택하기 위한 정확한 판단은 필수! 삶은 '여행'이니 매사를 그저 받아들이고 경험 자체를 즐기면 된다는 식의 지극히 낭만적인 얘기들은 불교와는 그 근본 출발점부터 완전히 동떨어진 시각인 것. 부처님의 가르침을 뗏목 삼아 열심히 노저어 '강'( =윤회의 소용돌이)을 건넌 사람이 뗏목에서 '내리는'( = 모든 생각/관념/노력을 놓는), 해탈을 완성하는 그 마지막 순간의 과업조차 정확한 평가에 의존한다. 그러므로 판단하지 말라는 것은 부처님의 가르침과는 전혀 무관한 얘기인데, 다만 세 가지를 늘 기억하고 또 매우 주의해야 한다.

첫째, 세속의 일반인들이 평가/판단을 하는 기준은 '나의 이익/기분' 혹은 '내가 신봉하는 사회/철학 이론'인데 반해 불교에서의 판단/평가 기준은 오로지 탐진치라는 것.

둘째, 평가의 대상은 나의 혹은 타인의 어떤 특정한 하나의 생각/말/행동일 뿐 그 사람 전체가 아니라는 것. (연쇄살인범이 아라한이 되는 얘기도 초기경전엔 나온다. 현재 탐진치에 푹 절어 있는 사람도 마음만 바꾸면 해탈의 길에 들어설 수 있으므로, 현재의 모습만 갖고서 그 사람 전체에 대한 최종 선고를 내리면 안 된다는 메세지. 진심이든 아니든 혜민 스님의 반성을 현각 스님이 두 말 없이 수용한 것도 이런 이유.) 타인이 나의 어떤 특정한 말을 비판할 때, 우린 그것이 '나'라는 인격 자체에 대한 모욕이라고 해석하기에 그래서 take personally하는 것이고, 그래서 타인의 충정어린 조언도 건설적으로 받아들이지 못 하는 것이며 (self-image에 대한 이런 집착에서 벗어나라는 가르침이 바로 불교의 '無我'), 내가 나의 self-image와 당장의 기분에 집착하기에 남도 그럴 것이라 생각해서, 그래서 무조건 남을 나의 위에/앞에 두고 기분을 맞춰 주는 것을 최고의 윤리라 믿게 된 것이지만, 초기불교는 다르다. 초기불교의 최대 관심사는 남에게 피해/부담 안 주면서 탐진치를 최소화해 나가는 것이며, 기분/즐거움 중심으로 사고하지 않기 위해 mindful 하라는 것이다. 타인의 행동을 평가하는 것도 그걸 거울 삼아 나 자신을 닦기 위함이며, 서로 충고를 해 준다 해도 결국 각자의 업은 오로지 본인의 책임이다.

셋째, 우리가 판단을 금기시하는 주된 이유 중 하나는, 마녀사냥이나 종교전쟁 등의 비극에 대한 기억이 있기 때문. 그러나 불교에서 하는 판단은 'judgmental' (당장 무언가를 배척/제거하기 위한 판단. 탐진치 증폭됨)이 아니라 'judicious' (인내와 이해의 노력이 수반되는 판단. 탐진치 감소됨)라고 타니사로 스님은 말씀하신다. 타인을 해치기 위한 폭력은 불교에선 어떤 경우에도 결코 정당화되지 않음 역시 물론이고. 어리석은 사람과 가깝게 지내지 말라는 얘기는, 인간들끼리의 상호작용을 원만하게 유지하려 하다 보면 하향 평준화나 탐진치의 시너지 효과로 귀결되기가 너무나 쉽기 때문일 뿐, '내가 생각하기에 어리석어 보이는 사람은 사회로부터 배제되어야 한다'는 얘기가 절대 아니다. 개인적으로 친밀한 상대이든 나에게 적대적인 상대이든 난 모든 존재를 무조건적이고 무한정한 goodwill을 갖고 대해야 하며, 적의나 경멸은 어떤 경우에도 불허된다. 사적으로 친밀한 관계가 아니더라도 도움도 얼마든지 주고 받을 수 있는 것이고.

수행자들 사이의 비판이 금기시된 것은 '제 발 저린' 사람들끼리 서로 보호하기 위한 일종의 카르텔이라고 나는 감히 생각한다. 후기 불교의 어떤 종파들은 수행자와 신도 간의 성적접촉 시의 처벌 규정마저도 율장으로부터 아예 삭제했다고.

  달라이 라마의 아래 가르침은 부처님의 입장과는 거리가 멀다. 부처님은 love/pema에 대해 부정적이셨으며, compassion/karuṇā 역시, 정확한 판단을 필요로 하는 의사의 일에 비유하셨다.

"정치 얘기 하지 말라"(A)라는 것. 화자의 의도와 달리, 결과적으로 기득권 세력에게 유리하게 작용하는 매우 정치적인 발언이기에, A를 말하는 사람은 A를 말하는 바로 그 순간 이미 자기 자신을 스스로 배반하게 되고.

"분별하지 말라"(B)는 것. '분별은 나쁘다'라는 명확한 분별에 의한 확신/相이기에 역시 자기패배적이며.

"'오직 모를 뿐'을 간직하면 지옥조차도 천상계가 될 수 있다"(C)라는 말씀을 하시는 분은, 이미 C를 알고 계시고 독자/청자에게도 C를 알려 주고 싶으신 것이니, 위 A, B의 사례들처럼, C를 말씀하시는 순간 본인도 독자/청자도 이미 C를 위반하게 됨.

"백 날 떠들어 봐야 언어는 손가락일 뿐 달이 아니다"고 하시는 분은 그럼 왜 침묵하시지 않고 그 내용을 언어를 통해 전달하는지?

분별에 부작용이 있으니 분별하지 말자는 것은, 인간의 뇌기능에 오류가 있을 수 있으니 뇌를 제거하자는 논리. 해경이 세월호를 구하지 못 했기에 해경을 해체한다는 박근혜 정권의 논리.

< The Logical Problem of Nondualism >

(A) "Form is emptiness; emptiness is form (色卽是空, 空卽是色)." => usually considered as nondualism. 

(B) "Form is form; emptiness is emptiness (色卽是色, 空卽是空)." => usually considered as dualism. 

.

To a dualist, 'emptiness' ≠ 'form'. Thus, (A) and (B) are the exact  opposites. To a nondualist, 'emptiness'＝'form'; they are just synonyms. Thus, (A) and (B) are the same; both are redundant repetitions of synonyms. This is why Shunryu Suzuki said "Form is form; emptiness is emptiness. Here there is no dualism". (My interpretation of this statement by Shunryu Suzuki is as follows. You put 'emptiness' in place of 'form' or vice versa, and it makes no difference. This is because, for you, there is no distinction between 'emptiness' and 'form', 'good' and 'bad', 'happy' and 'unhappy' or 'right' and 'wrong'.)

Therefore, if you are indeed a nondualist, why bother to try to fix or criticize a dualist when (A) and (B) are the same for you? Doesn't the fact that you have a problem with (B) only prove that you are not actually a nondualist against your own belief about yourself?

촛불은 법조차 초월하며 촛불만 들면 무조건 상근기다, 혹시 이런 말씀이신지? 촛불을 드는 행위에는 아무런 판단도 개입되지 않았다는 말씀이신지? 남 판단하는 건 상근기 아닌 중근기라는 게 백낙청 교수님 본인의 주장이신데, 그 주장을 하면서 본인도 중근기임을 고백하는 것이 이 글의 목적이신지? 그럼 본인도 중근기이면서 왜 다른 중근기는 비난하시는지? 본인은 끊임 없이 판단하면서 남들만 판단을 멈추라는 거, either 神 or 독재자만 할 수 있는 얘기 아닌지..

[창비 주간 논평] '촛불혁명'을 화두로 삼고 살아간다는 것

2020년은 정말 길고 힘든 한해였다. 유달리 어수선한 정국에다 전에 없던 코로나19 대유행까지 겹쳐 살림살이가 극도로 힘들어진 세월이었다. '세상이 왜 이래?'라는 탄식이 곳곳에서 들려오는 것도 당연하다. 하지만 냉정하게 돌이켜보면 세상은 늘 이랬고 여러 면에서 더 나쁘기도 했다. 물론 감염병 대유행이 겹친 점이 새롭지만, 이 경우도 주로 예전에 힘들었던 사람들이 더욱 힘들어진 사례가 대부분이다.

'촛불'이라는 화두와 표준

따라서 '세상이 왜 이래?'라는 물음도 그냥 탄식에 그칠 것이 아니다. 지난해 신년 칼럼에서 나는 촛불혁명을 섣불리 정의해서 찬반 어느 쪽을 고집하기보다 이를 화두 삼아 연마할 필요성을 강조한 바 있는데,(☞ 관련 기사 : <창비주간논평> 2019년 12월 30일 자 '[신년칼럼] 촛불혁명이라는 화두'(<한겨레> 동시 게재)) '이런 세상'의 실체가 속속 드러나고 있는 지금이야말로 더욱 그렇다. 민낯들의 드러남이 촛불혁명의 성과인 동시에, 드디어 민낯을 보여준 세력이 이제는 그야말로 '안면몰수' 하고 나설 것이 예상되기 때문이다. 

촛불혁명으로 가장 일찍 진면목을 드러낸 것이 거대 수구정당이었다. 그런 면에서 그들이야말로 가장 크게 변한 집단이다. 국민을 속여서 집권하는 게 목적이었고 2007년과 2012년 모두 그 목적을 너끈히 달성했던 정당이 촛불 이후 국민을 속이는 능력뿐 아니라 속이려는 성의마저 상실한 기색이 역력해졌다. 최근에는 2012년 박근혜 후보의 '경제민주화' 공약을 입안했던 분이 비상대책위원장으로 돌아와 다시 국민을 속일 수 있는 정당으로 만들고자 분투하고 있지만, 그사이 국민의 의식수준이 엄청 높아진 데다 당내에 솔직한 인사들이 너무 많아 자기들끼리 손발을 제대로 맞춰갈지도 의문이다. 일시적으로 여론의 지지도가 좀 오르더라도 반촛불세력의 지휘부라기보다 누구든 앞장서 정부를 흔들어대는 인사의 써포터즈 역할에 머무는 형국이다. 

검찰의 민낯도 온 천하에 드러났다. 검찰이 '무소불위의 권력'을 휘두르고 있음을 아는 이들은 전부터 꾸준히 늘어왔지만 설마 이 정도일 줄은 개혁을 추진한 대통령과 정부도 잘 몰랐던 게 분명하다. 그러나 윤석열 총장이 이끈 대대적 반항사태를 지켜보면서 철저한 검찰개혁이 수구정당 제압에 못지않은 시대적 과제임이 분명해졌다. 또한 검찰처럼 직접 칼을 휘두르지 않는다 뿐이지 국민을 죽이고 살리는 최종적 권한을 가진 법관들의 정체도 드디어 국민들에게 각인되기 시작했다. 그 동네야말로 설마가 사람 죽이는 곳인데, 사실 '설마'는 배부른 계층들 얘기이고 돈 없고 힘없는 백성들은 일찍부터 그곳이 ‘유전무죄 무전유죄’의 본고장임을 실감해왔다. 아무튼 학습의 소중한 기회를 얻었는데, 이럴 때일수록 관성적인 개탄이나 옥석을 안 가리는 과격한 공격이 아니라 촛불을 표준삼은 냉정한 형세판단과 착실한 제도개혁으로 대응할 필요가 절실하다. 

아직 덜 드러난 민낯들 

경제관료들, 특히 예산권을 틀어쥔 관료들의 실상도 드러나는 중이다. 한국의 재정건전성이 OECD 국가들 중에서 매우 양호한 축인데도 코로나사태로 거의 사경에 처한 사람들 도와주자고 할 때마다 '재정건전성'을 들고나와서 한푼이라도 덜 주려고 한다. K-방역이 진단과 추적에서 모범적인 성과를 내면서도 국민들의 전폭적인 협조를 얻는 데 한계를 보이는 것도, 정부관료가 서민을 '죽게 내버려두는' 속마음으로 재난극복에 임하고 있지 않나 하는 불신을 사기 때문은 아닐까.

이밖에도 우리 사회의 숨겨졌던 진실이 곳곳에서 표출되고 있다. 언론계가 정직한 보도를 하지 않는다는 점은 이미 많은 사람에게 알려졌다. 대중이 직접 참여한 큰 사건이 일어날 때마다 언론이 실상을 보도하지 않음을 체득하는 사람 수가 늘어나기 때문이다. 그러나 언론계의 문제가 일부 기자들의 타락, 또는 특정 언론사들의 진실왜곡에 국한되지 않는 현상임을 더 깊이 연마할 시점에 왔다. 이제는 저들의 왜곡보도가 단순한 사실왜곡의 수준을 넘어 촛불정부의 실패를 위한 면밀한 작전의 일환이며 그런 점에서 제1야당보다 대형 수구언론이 반촛불세력의 전략본부로 기능하고 있다고 봐야 한다. 또한 소위 진보신문이 이에 효과적인 대응을 못하는 것이 단지 물적 자원의 부족과 발행부수의 열세 탓이 아니라, 손쉬운 양비론에 안주하면서 포탈의 클릭 수에 누구 못지않게 집착하는 자세에 기인하기에 이른 것이 오늘의 현실이다. 그 배경에는 정권보다 금권이 우위에 선 지 오래된 우리 사회에서 언론인 집단 자체의 체질에 일어난 변화가 작용하고 있을 것이다. 

미진한 공부거리를 열거하자면 한이 없으나 여당에 대한 지적을 빼놓을 수 없다. 민주당이 수구야당과 동일한 수준의 적폐세력은 아니지만 줄곧 우리 사회 기득권구조의 일부로 기능해왔음은 엄연한 사실이며, 의석 180석을 동원할 수 있는 지금도 툭하면 말을 뒤집고 개혁에 발을 끄는 모습은 결코 대충 넘길 일이 아니다. 대통령 자신은 여전히 촛불정부의 초심을 잃지 않았다고 믿기에 나는 계속 지지를 보내는 축이지만, 촛불혁명의 개념조차 희박한 고위관료와 여권 정치인들을 제대로 통어하지 못하는 책임마저 불문에 부칠 수는 없다. 이는 정치적 개인기의 문제라기보다 촛불시민들과 지속적으로 소통하며 그들의 선한 기운을 북돋우는 노력의 문제인 것이다. 

근대세계와 '중근' 고비 

이런저런 민낯들을 보면서 우리가 반드시 할 일은 거울을 들여다보는 일이다. 상식적으로 추론해도 세상이 온통 '이런데' 자신만 온전할 확률이 얼마나 될까. 이런 세상을 만드는 데 각자가 스스로 해온 몫이 당연히 있게 마련이다. 사람에 따라 다르겠지만 대한민국을 '기후악당' 국가로 만드는 데 알게 모르게 기여한 바 있을 것이고, 노동을 멸시하고 생명을 경시하며 차별과 혐오를 조장하는 사회에서 무심코 살아왔다면 그것도 반성하고 참회할 대목이다. 나는 분단체제가 괴물이라면 그 속에서 살아온 우리 내부에도 괴물 하나씩은 있게 마련이라는 주장을 펴왔는데, 분단체제를 포괄하는 자본주의 세계체제의 괴물스러움 또한 팬데믹시대를 맞아 한층 뚜렷해지고 있다. 

불가에서는 부처님의 교화를 받을 능력과 소질을 근기(根機)라 하고 상‧중‧하 등급으로 나누곤 한다. 물론 하근기라도 수행을 통해 중‧상근으로 진급할 수 있는데 가장 위태로운 것이 오히려 중근(中根)의 고비라고 한다. 이 단계에서는 아주 몽매한 상태를 벗어나 분별력이 늘고 더러 사람들의 칭찬을 받기도 하지만, 그 때문에 오히려 자기 기준으로 매사를 재단함으로써 상근으로 못 가고 심지어 하근보다 못한 지경에 떨어지기 일쑤라는 것이다. 

주변에서 자기 마음에 안 드는 언행을 일삼으며 혼자 똑똑한 척하는 '중근병자'들을 식별하기는 어렵지 않다. 반면에 자신이 동조하는 사람들 중에서 그런 부류를 인지하기는 한결 어렵다. 무엇보다 스스로 중근 고개에 걸려 있다는 생각은 중근기일수록 하지 못한다. 이런 때야말로 스승이나 목자, 도반의 일깨움이 필요한데, 우리 시대에는 어떤 스승의 존재보다 촛불혁명의 거대한 흐름을 마음에 모시고 정진하는 것이 중근 고비 넘기의 관건이다.

굳이 불교 용어를 빌려온 것은 근대세계체제야말로 중근병자를 대량생산하도록 설계된 체제라는 생각에서다. 교육의 확대와 지식산업의 발달, 특히 디지털정보기술의 극대화로 하근에 멈춘 인구가 대폭 줄어든 대신, 중근 고개를 넘어 상근기로 진급하는 공부는 공식적인 교육과정이나 교육이념에서 아예 자취를 감춘 형국이다. 아니, 자기 몸을 닦아 인간세상을 평안하게 하는 공부, 스스로 부처가 되어 중생을 건지는 공부, 또는 하나님을 공경하고 이웃을 내 몸처럼 사랑하는 공부는 진지하게 하면 할수록 손해 보게 되어 있는 세상이다. 

촛불혁명을 화두로 삼고 살아간다는 것은 바로 이런 세상에서 나라다운 나라를 만들자는 엄청난 도전이다. 2020년의 고난과 혼란 속에서도 이런 작업이 멈추지 않았다는 믿음을 갖는 것은 감염병 대유행에 대처해온 공동체의 분투, 사회운동, 시민정치, 학문, 예술, 기술 등의 수많은 현장에서 촛불을 화두로 삼은 창의적 노력들이 계속 벌어져왔음을 알기 때문이다.

서양에서는 주로 만물을 창조, 주관, 심판하는 절대자의 존재를 전제하는 믿음 체계를 '종교'라 부르는 경향이 있으며, 이에 의하면 불교는 종교가 아니다. (부처님이 인간을 위해 해 주실 수 있는 일은 오로지 가르침을 남기는 일뿐.) 그러나 '종교'라는 단어의 '宗'을 '으뜸'으로 해석하여 '우주를 지배하는 근본 원리에 대한 가르침'이라 말하는 분도 계신데, 이 정의를 따르자면 불교뿐 아니라 유교와 도교도 종교라 할 수 있다. 평범한 인간의 인지적 감각적 한계를 넘어서는 것을 통틀어 '영성'이라고 대개 부르는 것 같은데, 그렇다면 무속도 포함되어야 하고. '종교'는 '영적인 것들에 대한 지식과 가치의 체계'라고도 정의할 수 있을 텐데, 예를 들면 평범한 인간의 인지적 감각적 한계를 벗어나는 윤회 같은 것을 가르치니 불교는 당연히 종교에 해당된다. 뉴에이지는 베다-힌두 철학을 바탕으로 여러 종교철학들을 혼합한 것으로서, 특히 미국에서는 "너 자신이 神이야. 네가 원한다면 너는 며칠 안에 백만장자도 될 수 있지만 그렇게 못 하고 있는 것은 네가 신이라는 사실을 네 스스로 의심하기 때문일 뿐!" 이라면서 감정/욕망의 과신/맹신과 감각적/정서적 즐거움의 최대한의 추구를 부추기는 '아편 딜러' 혹은 '엔터테이너'들이 거의 연예인 수준으로 떼돈을 벌어 들이고 있다.

중요한 건, 어떤 종교이든, 당사자의 노력 아닌 초월자/능력자의 힘에 의지해 어떤 결실 (부, 명예, 건강, 영생 등)을 쉽게 얻고자 하는 인간의 사행심 (공부 안 하고 컨닝하여 좋은 성적 받고 싶어 하는 무임승차 심리)과 타협하는 순간 '사이비'가 되는 게 아닐까 하는 점이다. 즉, 무엇(what)을 믿는가?보다는 어떻게(how) 사는가?의 문제라고 내게는 생각된다. 또, 인간의 의식 수준이나 integrity의 제고를 위한 수행 방법이 체계적으로 정리되어 있지 않은 종교는 구체적인 수행 체계를 갖고 있는 종교보다 떨어진다고 나는 판단한다. 의식 수준과 integrity의 제고에 있어서는 무력하면서 인간의 사행심과의 결탁을 오히려 '자비'/'사랑'으로 미화할 때, 부정직과 탐욕의 결합일 뿐인 사행심이 '神聖'이라는 거짓말로 포장될 때, 종교나 영성은 거대한 자기미화, 자기기만, 사기가 된다.

그건 그렇고.. 기 관련 사기나 사이비 종교는 왜 이렇게 흔한 것일까? 

기라는 것 자체는 허구가 아니고, 어디까지나 운동으로서만 접근하면 기공도 좋은 수련이 될 수 있다고 나는 본다. 다만, 기라는 것은 물질 vs. 비물질의 이분법을 초월하는, 혹은 물질과 비물질을 연결하는 '무언가'이기 때문에, 의식이 중요한 역할을 하는 듯 하다. (관심 있으신 분은, MIT와 프린스턴 대학에서 학위를 받은 Claude Swanson 물리학 박사의 "Life Force, the Scientific Basis"를 읽어 보시기를.) 그래서 어떤 효과가 나타났을 때 이것이 단순히 '플라시보 효과'인지 '진짜'인지 판단하기가 어렵고 (사실 기수련은 이 둘 사이의 구분에 관심 자체가 없다), 그렇다 보니 사기 치기도 그만큼 쉬워지는 것. 아무 효과가 없을 때는 "니가 의식을 집중하지 않은 탓"이라고 해 버리면 그만이기에. 물론 플라시보 효과든 뭐든 실제로 건강이 개선된다면 혼자서 하는 거야 누가 뭐라겠는가. 그러나 기치료라는 게 이론적으로는 가능하지만 행하는 분에게 많은 부담이 되는 일인지라, "운동으로서의 기공을 가르쳐 줄 테니 니 몸은 니 스스로 치료해라"가 아닌 "내가 너의 병을 고쳐 주마"라고 말하는 분을 만난다면 일단 의심하는 게 현명하다는 것이 내가 아는 어떤 기공 선생님의 견해다. 무엇보다, 기수련은 integrity 향상 프로그램은 아니라는 것!

정신을 집중하는 선정수련을 하다 보면 귀신이 보이거나 들릴 수도 있고 (감각을 확장하고 예민하게 만들면 다른 차원의 존재들이 보이고 들리고 하는 것일 뿐, 최소한 이론적으로는 이게 뭐 신기한 일이 아님), 소위 신통력 같은 것도 생겨날 수 있기는 하다. 생년월일도 없이 그냥 사람 얼굴만 보고서 그의 과거와 현재 상태를 줄줄 읊어 대니 다들 껌벅 넘어가서 그 사람을 추종하고 그렇게 사기를 당하는 것인데, 이것도 우리가 어떤 사람을 보고서 그 사람의 성품이나 지적 수준 등을 추측하는 것보다 발전된 정도라고 보아야. 또 선정은 지혜 계발의 조건일 뿐 지혜 자체는 아니고, 신통력도 그 자체만으로 지혜라고 부를 수 없으며, 신통력의 유무로 인격이나 의식 수준을 측정할 수도 없다고 아비담마는 분명히 못 박고 있다! (이 사실 하나만 알아도 사기꾼들에게 넘어갈 일은 없으련만.) 그리고 당신의 과거와 현재를 아무리 훤히 꿰뚫는 사람이라 해도 당신의 미래까지 알 수는 없으니, 그런 분은 그저 '특이한 기술을 가진 전문가' 정도로만 생각하시고 도인 취급이나 인격적 신뢰는 절대 하지 마시라!!! '사랑'이나 '영성' 같은 그럴 듯한 단어들을 아무리 남발해도 수행 '체계'를 갖추지 못 했다면 정서적 힐링/고무에 그칠 뿐이니, 그런 뜬구름 잡기나 지적 유희에도 현혹되지 마시고. (에고를 버려라, 착하게 살아라, 이런 류의 얘기들은 초등학생도 할 수 있는 것. 구체적 수행 체계 없이 그런 도덕적 당위만 반복하는 건, 위선만 부추기는 결과가 될 수도 있다.)

[참고] 매 행동 (생각과 말 포함)의 사전에, 와중에, 그리고 또 사후에, 누구에게 어떤 장단기적 피해/스트레스를 초래하는지를 늘 분석해라, 자신뿐 아니라 타인의 행동에 대해서도 어떤 탐진치가 얼마나 들어 있는지를 관찰하고 판단해라 (사람 사이의 우열을 비교하기 위한 유치한 목적이 아니라 분별력의 계발을 위한 훈련), 자신이 뭔가 실수를 했을 때는 그걸 알아차리는 정도로 넘어가지 말고 신뢰하는 사람에게 상의해라 (자신의 실수를 공개적으로 인정하는 용기를 내지 않으면 결국 자기 자신의 의식에게도 자신의 오류를 감추고 합리화하는 부정직과 자기기만을 키우게 되므로) 등등 세세하고 구체적인 가르침을 부처님은 남기셨다. 이런 훈련을 통해 integrity를 다지고 견해와 일상을 먼저 정돈한 후 명상을 하라는 뜻에서 팔정도의 8요소도 견해 => 일상 => 명상의 순으로 배열되어 있는 것. 부처님은 또 제사나 부적 등에 의지하지 말라는 말씀도 하셨다.

진정한 깨달음, 진리의 길은 그런 초자연적인 것들과는 별개의 것이기는 하죠. 그런 능력이 있다고 해서 지혜로운 것도 진리에 더 가까운 것은 아닙니다. 하지만, 정상적인 경우에는 그런 능력은 세상에 대한 지혜나 깨달음이 없이는 사특한 쪽으로 흐르고 결국 소위 말하는 주화입마 같은 것에 빠지는 것으로 알고 있습니다. 멀쩡하고, 훌륭한 인격의 종교 지도자, 수행자들이 어느 순간 돈이나 여자(또는 남자)를 밝히는 사이비 교주로 빠지는 이유가 거기에 있죠.

Dr. Claude Swanson was educated as a physicist at MIT and Princeton University. During those years he worked at the MIT Science Teaching Center, Brookhaven National Laboratory and a Virginia cyclotron in the summer. At Princeton he received the National Science Foundation Fellowship and Putnam Fellowship. His Ph.D. thesis at Princeton was done in the "Gravity Group," which focuses on experimental cosmology and astronomy, and was headed by Dr. Robert Dicke. His thesis advisor was Prof. David Wilkinson, who later became chairman of the physics department.

Swanson conducted postgraduate work at Princeton and Cornell Universities on the design of superconducting plasma containment vessels for fusion energy systems. He then began work for Aeronautical Research Associates of Princeton, a consulting company, and later formed his own consulting company which carried out studies in applied physics for commercial and governmental agencies, including DuPont, United Technologies, the U.S. Army and Navy, DARPA and the CIA, among many others.

For the last fifteen years, interspersed with his conventional professional career in applied physics, Dr. Swanson has pursued investigations into "unconventional physics." His principal interest has been unified field theory, the so-called "Theory of Everything" which could explain the universe at the deepest possible level. This has led him to investigate many aspects of the paranormal, which appear to be completely real phenomena which violate our present science. Paranormal phenomena, which have now been proven in the laboratory in many cases, offer a window into the deeper universe, the mysteries of consciousness, and unlock new forces and principles which conventional science has only begun to glimpse.

Among paranormal phenomena which are now known, it has been found that signals can move much faster than light, and the human consciousness and even human influence, can move backward and forward in time. Science fiction concepts such as teleportation and levitation seem to occur in reality in paranormal events, and offer powerful evidence that this will be the new frontier of science.

At the same time, thousands of out-of-body and near-death experiences show that other dimensions and other realities do exist. This has been the domain of speculation by theoretical physics, but OBE and NDE cases indicate that parallel realities and dimensions are in some sense real. And finally, paranormal research suggests that the human soul, the center of human consciousness, can survive death and is apparently an energy form which can move and exist independently of the body. Science is discovering that, in the words of the pioneer Robert Monroe, " we are far more than our physical bodies."

Dr. Swanson has conducted extensive research in these areas, including research of the scientific literature, interviews with scientists in these fields, attended and spoken at conferences, and conducted experiments and investigations, to better understand how such paranormal phenomena can be incorporated into modern science.

This research has involved underwater archaeology in Bimini, scientific measurements in haunted houses, experiments in remote viewing and psychokinesis, and testing of new devices which can measure these strange forces. He has just published a book, The Synchronized Universe, which summarizes some of the new discoveries of this emerging science.

Brilliant book. Took me several years to finish. A big book in size, 8x12, and very detailed. Covers the research on the paranormal. Chapters on Remote viewing, ESP, Psychokinesis, Levitation, Teleportation, Out of Body experiences, Near-Death experiences, Prophesy. 

The first of 3 volumes. Vol 2 - Life Force - is too expensive for me to purchase - between $250-$300 now. 

The original price was $75. 

Takes a lot of time to get through, but definitely worth it.

This book is written by Claude Swanson a Princeton PhD Physicist with an undergraduate degree in Physics from MIT. Swanson, who wrote this book in 2003 (LIFE FORCE was written in 2010) contends that there is enough paranormal activity accepted by several groups, including the US Government (Remote Viewing), that laws of Physics must change to accomodate this activity.

Very interesting book. Provides many examples and rightly challenges the "Scientific paradigm" of measurements. The Scientific paradigm is based on Physical reality only, and so when they can't measure it because it isn't physical, many scientists say it isn't real, when in reality the phenomena is as real as other things, we just have not had the insights that would allow us to "measure, quantify & qualify" the phenomena. I feel that Dr. Swanson brings credibility to phenomena that have long been real and rightly argues that as REAL SCIENTISTS, we need to begin to look for an find ways of Scientifically validating phenomena that is and has been occurring all along in history.

A Harvard man, originally rebuffing such bizarre claims, found himself on the other side of the worm hole, thus he has been able to dig deep and instead of the fluff and woo woo that often goes along with this type of thing, he actually shares some insight to the paranormal, backed up with science. The mysteries which quantum physics presents are not any 'further- out' than the 'far-out' conclusions Dr. Swanson presents as a physicist, (with respect to paranormal events in this world). His book explains many things which demand explaining through physics. It is impossible to lay his his book, "The Syncronized Universe" aside.

Depending on your science background, this book could range from a 1 star to a 5 star book. It is undoubtedly not for people without a science background and no interest in Western Science as evidenced by the 1star review. For him it was a bad book, but certainly not for thirty 5 star reviewers, and I vote with them. This book reviews about a century of research that for the most part starts in the mid 1900s, but occasionally goes back a bit further. It may be the best or even the only good integration of recent physics and healing research available. Swanson says some researchers complained about research publications telling them if their research is not main stream it is too controversial to publish. This may be because of an opinion I read somewhere that some scientists don’t want to hear that the twentieth century science they learned may no longer be the basic reality. These scientists may not be comfortable with significant change. A new generation of scientists and education may be needed for The Life Force to be widely accepted. The ESP and “miracle” healing research reviews seem valid, but some people may not believe them. His target audience clearly describes it as an excellent 5 star book. However, when I read through much of the book I was often referring back to earlier parts of the book I didn’t understand adequately. I give it only 3 stars because after my first reading/ rereading, I expect it may take me two more readings to get my understanding up somewhere near where the “next generation” will be. It might have helped to read part one of his series first, but I would rather have started with this book. Swanson’s writing makes the research understandable and the book has good reference detail, it certainly is an interesting book. I have related graduate education, but I believe it can be understood by an intelligent person who does not have a good science education, wants to know more about health and science, and is willing to spend the time. I sometimes reference the Internet for information, but be careful about what you read. I like the Wikipedia for technical information, but they surprised me by saying that energy medicine is pseudoscience, they may agree with the research publications comment above.

Update: I have now had some quality time to read and digest this book, with the following additional comments:

This is indeed an amazing book. While much of the information contained within is known and available elsewhere, this book is the first and only time I have observed it all to be in on location. This a superb reference for all thing related to energetic healing, communications, and influencing at a distance. Regardless of your specific area of interest (mine is bioenergy devices), I believe any serious student of the nature and characteristics of what is broadly classified as "life force" will find this book invaluable. I also admire that the author presents what is known, what has been experimentally proven, and what is subjective or unproven as the information is presented. He presents the reader with information in an objective research point of perspective and does not lead the reader on any agenda or forced outcome.

I also found the format to be outstanding. Every information element is cataloged and presented in a very coherent manner, with cross reference notations forward/backward within the text to information previously presented or to be presented later. Key messages of importance are presented in bold text and underlined, and I personally found them to very closely match text that I myself would have marked for emphasis. There were literally only a couple of dozen areas of text of particular importance to me, that were not pre-highlighted by the author. It's almost as though Claude and I were reading and annotating the text together many times in this book.

This is a resource of extremely valuable information assembled with genuine care, attention to detail, and a genuine passion and love for the subject matter by the author.

A copy of this book should be in every persons reference library. There is a broad and pervasive resonance of intelligence and order in our universe, and this book takes the reader well down the pathway of understanding how it works... why resonance connects us all, and how we can be aware of and make use of natural laws that govern the flow and applications of this resonance.

This will be an initial review of the book, not so much a critical review of the contents (I'll provide that after a complete and detailed reading).

Quality: the Book is very well produced. Excellent binding, cover, and interior. This book is 8 1/2 by 11" size and printed on good quality paper stock. This is a very good quality paperback product.

First Impressions: A quick review of contents inside, I have to say, the writing style is clear, easy to read and follow, yet does not gloss over topics. It reads exactly as Claude talks (if you have seen youtubes of Claude you will understand what I mean).

Once I read fully read and digest the book, I'll update this review.

An absolutely incredible compendium of research relating to Life Force/Subtle Energy. Covers research from the 1850's to the present and from all over the world. Includes tables, charts, graphs, explanations, and references for each experiment, so you learn not just the results but also the why. Covers every topic imaginable in the field (scientific basis of the life force). This should be in every researches library and should be read. It is a very big book and takes a long time to go through, but by doing so you gain an incredible understanding and appreciation of the field.

The only weak point is the author's own model. The problem is that he starts with the conventional model of physics (relativity, quantum mechanics, quarks, ...), which is flawed. Every day new data is popping up where this model fails (i.e. they have to start fudging by introducing things like dark energy and matter). Of particular note is what Rupert Sheldrake discusses in "Science Set Free". He points out that the speed of light, and Gravity are actually varying and are not constants, with gravity varying in sidereal time. This implies (along with a lot of other evidence) that there is an ether. Paul Laviolette's "Subquantum Kinetics" is the most comprehensive model for the ether. His model actually has about five dozen advantages over the conventional model from a data matching perspective and is far simpler from a number of model elements perspective than the conventional model. Using Subquantum Kinetics the Torsion Field discussed by Claude and others makes much more sense. The Subquantum Kinetics model includes etheron's that interact like chemicals, and the interaction of these etherons creates standing spinning fields (like spherical tornadoes). It is these tornadoes that are elementary particle. Like a tornado there would be spin not just in the particle but also a milder spin around it. This fits very well with many of the Torsion Field experiments Claude discussed.

Dr. Shealy recommended this book in one of his books on energy healing, and I am so grateful that he did. This is one of the most complete books on this topic that I have seen anywhere, and it appears to be thoroughly researched. Editing is excellent as well.

If I had any gripes at all, it would be the SIZE of the book. Books with this much information would necessarily be huge, but this book is so big that one almost requires a luggage cart to carry it around! Not a book you can tuck into your bag to read in the checkout line, that's for sure! So my request to the author and publishers: PLEASE PUT THIS BOOK ON KINDLE, for easier reading.

Actually, purchasing a Kindle version and the paper version would the best of all possible worlds. Amazon, author, publisher--please make it so!

Claude Swanson is a Princeton PhD Physicist with an undergraduate degree in Pysics from MIT. LIFE FORCE proposes that Consciousness is the fifth basis force in Physics along with Gravity, Electromagnetism, The Strong Force and The Weak Force; that this fifth force, Consciousness exists in dimensions above the four that we know; and that there is plenty of empirical observations and experiments to prove his thesis. He call this a new physics since it defies so many of the basic laws (relativity for one) that we now have. His thesis bridges Einsteinian physics with Quantum physics without using String theory. Amazing. I'm still skeptical about the studies cited, as I have found that a majority of them have not been peer reviewed or have been reviewed as poor studies. However, the ideas presented blow my mind and actually make sense. I've always had the feeling that there was more to this reality and this helps me to understand what that more is and how it works. A must read for anyone seeking answers to questions about life force, Chi, Prana, paranormal activity, altered states of consciousness, Esp, Pk, etc. (less)
