I generally think of my brain as a blobby organ that causes me to spout random nonsense on a regular basis, and chugs steadily along on doses of caffeine, but according to the authors of Your Daily Brain, there’s more to it than that. During the course of twenty-four hours, your brain will be called upon to prioritize, decide, categorize, and evaluate—sometimes all at once. That’s a lot of stress for a couple of pounds of gray cells. Your Daily Brain attempts to explain the why and where of the decision making process and how best to maximize your brain’s potential.

The book is organized into sections according to ten or fifteen minute periods throughout the typical day. Each time period has snippets on what a brain may be doing, and advice on how to help it function better. It starts with waking up at 6:00 am (don’t use the snooze alarm) and ends at 9:00 pm (forgive yourself for a good night’s sleep). Want to jump-start your brain power at 7:15 in the morning? Leave the Sugar Frosted Flakes in the pantry and eat a breakfast with a low glycemic index like steel cut oatmeal. Shopping for groceries in the afternoon? Favor your amygdala over the prefrontal cortex. The amygdala wants the Snickers, the cortex screams you’re a lard butt and makes you put it back. The book deals with such far-flung topics as how best to use your brain to search the internet to why you should fine an exercise routine (the chemicals secreted are the same ones oozed out when you’re in love.) My favorite was the 6:15 pm, love in the evening, section. Apparently, the following three questions are all you need to determine a mate’s compatibility. Do you like horror movies? Have you ever traveled around the country alone? Wouldn’t it be fun to chuck it all and live on a sailboat?

I'd recommend this book for anyone who likes odd facts and interesting science tidbits. All the articles are short and easy to read for the non-sciency type. Since they are keyed to a particular time, you can finish this book in a day in short bursts, or skip from one article to another. The latter is actually a better idea. According to Your Daily Brain, creativity comes from shaking things up.

"Your Daily Brain" is a collection of various studies about the brain which the authors summarize and explain in plain English in a casual, humorous tone. The authors also suggested things you can do to make use of these insights into your brain. It was more fun facts than life-changing insights, but I found it interesting from start to finish. Their suggestions were all do-able with minimal effort, so it's likely I'll apply what I learned in this book.

Each study was given a time-of-day heading though most also applied to other times of day. The "morning time" studies had more to do with getting your brain engaged and plans made for the day. Mid-day covered relating to people and tasks on the job. Evening times covered things like interacting with your family and how your brain knows it's time to sleep. We learn things like should you hit the snooze button? Eat breakfast and, if so, what types of foods? Aim for optimism or positive thinking? Multi-task? And what types of things help with creativity and problem solving? How does anger--or distraction--affect your judgment?

If you like brain studies, you may have heard some of this information before. Or you might have heard things that aren't actually backed up by studies (like different learning styles--using your preferred learning style won't necessarily help you learn better). But if you like learning about how your brain works and prefer the summary version of the studies, you'll likely to find something new and interesting in this book.

The book's chapters are structured in time slots throughout the day, from getting up (don't set your alarm clock, your brain knows when sleep time's over) to going to bed at night (turn off the lights, stop reading, put your smartphone away). Serious stuff like mirror neurons firing at your company's emotions, the effects of alcohol and drugs to losing your brains due to anger. I really enjoyed this book. It's written simply. The complex concepts are simply stated. Illustrations abound. Everyday examples are included that support the material. For example, homeostasis was supported by an athlete who died from heat exhaustion. The supplemental online support that the publisher created has great videos so students who despise biology (like myself) can understand complex topics such as the Kreb's cycle of photosynthesis. I actually started to like biology a little. Great job! I have not sold this book back; it's a keeper!

PS: There are many versions of this book. I have the instructor's edition, which is exactly the same as the student version. I spoke to my professor and he was fine with me using this book, but buyer beware. Some instructors will panic if they see a student with an instructor copy as they often have to re-write tests.

I would rate book 4/5 due to the poor quality of the paperback cover, but the information in the book is so good I have to rate it a 5/5. I wish this book was a hardcover because I'm planning on keeping it the rest of my life, but the paperback cover quality is very poor. The quality of the pages and ink are very good though. I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in our universe.




Anyways, I used this textbook for my Introduction to Astronomy course. This textbook is great in explaining concepts with only basic math (for a simple derivation of Einstein's Special Relativity, you only need to remember highschool geometry). The 1st chapter of the book is absolutely mindblowing as it ventures into the vast scale of the universe. The 3rd chapter, which address the nature of science, is well-written to give you a feel for how the scientific method works (everyone should read this section because there are so many misconceptions about the scientific method). The 2nd part of the book goes into key concepts mandatory for astronomy. These sections will be harder for people without a scientific background (i.e. those not in a science or engineering major). A lot of the students in the class struggled during these chapters not due to the mathematics, but due to the amount of information present in these chapters. What I learned during 3 years of physics and engineering is shrunken down to 3 compact chapters. But the authors do their best job to simplify concepts, and these sections were really fun to read. These chapters will show you how beautiful physics really is, and more importantly will set the foundation for the rest of the book.




Parts 3-7 will be the most interesting parts of the book (about 20 chapters total), depending on which subfield you enjoy. These parts include planets (and exoplanets), stars, galaxies, cosmology, and a few other topics like quantum mechanics, special/general relativity, and exobiology. I would sit and read these chapters in awe. It's not worth getting into detail about each chapter, but I can't express enough how great these chapters were written. There are a ton of pictures, graphs, and tables to help with the concepts. I read this book word for word from front to back. For anyone without a strong mathematical background, but wants to learn about astronomy, I would highly recommend this textbook.




Edit: I used this textbook last school year. This year I've began my 3-course astronomy minor and I keep this introductory book by my desk because the picture references are great. My professor even uses the diagrams in our astrophysics class because they are so colorful and, more importantly, informative (the HR diagram included is color-coded and merges the theorist's and observer's diagrams together. I have yet to see a better HR diagram than the one in this book).

I'm a professional science writer and curriculum developer who is long out of college. This book is organizer beautifully for conceptually developing planetary geology, geophysics and astronomy on a readable level. Up-to-date with excellent graphics and a nicely done index, it is my go to reference guide. I prefer it over the Internet to help with the "big picture" ideas. I've read other textbooks cover to cover and the organizational flow, coupled with the through chapter development is outstanding. He begins with a page on pedagogy that says it all: Focus on the big picture, work on conceptual ideas, relate the material to what students already know and then idea more obscure details. I've taught for more than 20 years and this is a sound way to impart complex information.

Alphacrucis College (AC, formerly Commonwealth Bible College and Southern Cross College) is a tertiary Christian liberal arts college. In addition to being the largest self-accrediting Christian liberal arts College in Australia, it is the official training college of Australian Christian Churches, the Assemblies of Godin Australia. The College has campuses in every state capital city in Australia, campuses in Auckland and in Finland, and registered sites of offer in other places. Its main campus in Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia. The College has programmes running in various colleges and churches around Australia. Since the College was founded in 1948, over 20,000 students have been trained and the graduates are engaged in ministry all around the world. Currently, over 3000 students are enrolled in various programs, from VET Certificates, to Bachelors courses, coursework Masters programs and higher degrees by research (Master of Philosophy and PhD) in Education, Ministry, Theology and Business/ Leadership.

AC offers several courses in ministry, business, music, chaplaincy and counselling; accredited by the Australian Skills Quality Authority.[1][2] It is also a self-accrediting higher education institution,[3]authorised to provide a range of theology, ministry, business, leadership, and education degrees up to doctorate level,[4] baccalaureate and postgraduate programs in counselling, and a Korean languageprogramme.[5] The college ethos is based on an evangelical Pentecostal/Charismatic orientation. AC began as "Commonwealth Bible College" in 1948 in Melbourne, after an abortive attempt by Henry Wiggins to set up the college in the 1930s.[7] In 1949 the college moved to Brisbane,[7] first to New Farm, and in 1961 to a purpose-built campus on the Brisbane River which was destroyed in the 1974 Brisbane flood.[8]

After a year of temporary operation at Glad Tidings Tabernacle in Brisbane,[8] a new campus was obtained and refurbished at Katoomba, New South Wales in the former Palais Royale guesthouse.[9] The facilities of the Illawara Bible College were later added to the campus. The college remained at Katoomba until 1995.[8] In 1993 the name was changed, first to "Southern Cross Bible College" and then to "Southern Cross College of the Assemblies of God in Australia Ltd"[8] (not to be confused with Southern Cross University). From early 1996 to August 2011, the college was at Chester Hill, New South Wales.[8][10] For a period during this time, the college was associated with the Sydney College of Divinity.[6][11]

AC Central - Alphacrucis College Parramatta Campus, 2014

On 27 April 2009 at the Australian Christian Churches National Conference, Southern Cross College officially changed its name to Alphacrucis. The new name derives from the star that sits at the foot of the Southern Cross constellation named Alpha Crucis. The principal, Stephen Fogarty, says, “Alphacrucis is the brightest star in the Southern Cross, and it’s at the foot of the cross. […] We want our students to shine brightly at the foot of the cross.”[12]

In September 2011, AC relocated its main campus to 30 Cowper Street, Parramatta, Sydney (formally opening it in March 2012[13]); and also re-opened its Brisbane campus at the site of iSEE CHURCH – 308 Seventeen Mile Rocks Road, Seventeen Mile Rocks, Brisbane. In early 2014, the AC Brisbane campus relocated to 35 Thompson Street, Bowen Hills, Brisbane – on the grounds of Hope Centre International. In 2016, it opened its own campus in Woolloongabba, to which it has since added campuses at Melville Street, Hobart, and in Melrose Park, Adelaide.

In December 2017, the other official ACC College, Harvest Bible College, merged with Alphacrucis College.[14]
Faculty and research[edit]

The faculty of Alphacrucis includes over thirty staff with doctoral level qualifications, and currently employs 180 staff in all.[15] The college has set up the Australasian Pentecostal Heritage Centre, which includes the largest online repository of historical Pentecostal journals in the Southern Hemisphere – including issues of the Australian Evangel back to 1927. They have also created a refereed journal, Australasian Pentecostal Studies. As of 2018, the college library had over 100,000 volumes, and extensive electronic collections.[16] In addition, in 2017 Alphacrucis established the Centre for the Future of Schooling (http://www.cfs.ac/) to act as a catalyst for research-driven improvement in the independent Schooling sector.

About the Author




Ben Falk, M.A.L.D, developed Whole Systems Design, LLC, as a land-based response to biological and cultural extinction and the increasing separation between people and elemental things. Life as a designer, builder, ecologist, tree-tender, and backcountry traveler continually informs Ben's integrative approach to developing landscapes and buildings. His home landscape and the WSD studio site in Vermont's Mad River Valley serve as a proving ground for the innovative land developments featured in the projects of Whole Systems Design. Ben has studied architecture and landscape architecture at the graduate level and holds master of arts in landscape design degree. He has taught design courses at the University of Vermont and Harvard's Arnold Arboretum as well as on permaculture design, microclimate design, and design for climate change. He recently served on the board of directors at the Yestermorrow Design-Build School, where he also teaches from time to time. He is the author of The Resilient Homestead: Innovative Permaculture Systems for the Home and Farm.

The title really says it all. For those unfamiliar with the concept, permaculture, as defined in this work, is "applied disturbance ecology". The fundamental idea being that working with the land allows an optimized native ecosystem which is productive, supports life, and requires minimal maintenance. The term was first proposed by Bill Mollison and Dave Holmgren and first published in book form in Permaculture One: A Perennial Agricultural System for Human Settlements, and more extensively fleshed out in Permaculture: A Designers' Manual, but these are the kinds of works which beg for explanation. They are full of practical advice, plans and drawings for homestead design, water usage, and crop selection, but for all their visionary qualities, Mollison and Holmgren are not as organized or easy to follow as many would like. Additionally, the practical examples, with before and after pictures, and case studies demonstrating effectiveness are minimal in those works. This, I think, is the reason for the explosion of works like Shephard's Restoration Agriculture, and Hemenway's Gaia's Garden. This work is very much in the same tradition, but I liked it better than either of those.
The first chapter is a "why permaculture?" discussion. It hits the high points of Mollison's idea, and though it doesn't say much you won't find elsewhere, it is clearly written and provides a solid foundation to the rest of the book. The second chapter discusses the design process, how to go about planning the transformation of a plot of land into a permacultured homestead. In this, it summarizes prior works, but does so every bit as extensively as the one dedicated work I've read on the subject: Permaculture Design: A Step-by-Step Guide. You do not need that book if you have this one. Chapter three is a summary of earth works and water planning, and while not as extensive as Yeoman's Water For Every Farm, it explains well enough that you could forgo that in the short term. It does not discuss contour plowing as extensively as Mark Shephard or Yeoman does. But it will give you the basic ideas behind the process. Chapter four discusses recycling of fertility, composting, and the how to use the cycle of decay and regeneration to benefit every living thing on your homestead. Chapter five discusses food crops, which centers around perennial crops and how to integrate grazing animals, poultry, and plant life to generate yields greater than the sum of the parts. Here again the discussion and the examples are better than in Restoration Agriculture, though some of the choices are tailored specifically to the northern temperate climate of Vermont. Enthusiasts in other climes will need to look elsewhere for specific choices. Intriguingly, the staple crop Mr. Falk grows is rice, and there is some good discussion of why this crop. Certainly unique in American agriculture, which has been solidly dominated by wheat and corn, but probably not as useful to permaculturists in more arid areas. Chapter six discusses fuel, and why wood burning, coupled with energy efficient housing design, is the most ecologically sound choice for a homestead. He also discusses building design, including how to plan for passive water conservation and use. Chapter seven is a "putting it all together" discussion. These chapters are followed with appendixes of tool lists, checklists, and design outlines.
Overall, probably the best introduction to the topic, in a practical sense with examples, that I have read. While the details are specific to his location, it could not be otherwise, and for homesteaders in that climate, it will be even more useful. For those in the Midwest, the practical examples in Restoration Agriculture will be better, but that work is not as clear, nor as good on topics outside crop selection and planting as this one is. Additionally, while details of some aspects of sustainable living are glossed over here, it does not purport to be a self-contained manual to every aspect. For those interested in this topic for the first time, I would recommend this work, followed by Introduction to Permaculture as a starting point. You probably don't need much else if you have imagination, helpful neighbors, some understanding of local ecology, and a desire to experiment. For those already widely read on the subject, this is a solid addition to a permaculture library, demonstrating the feasibility and success of these principles in well photographed detail. Highly recommended.

I've been gardening, homesteading, medium scale farming/ranching in three states (MO, northern CA & NM) and five properties in the past nearly 50 years, have an extensive library, subscribe to several excellent relevant publications, am constantly learning and expanding my skills & horizons. This is, hands down, one of the best, most comprehensive and HELPFUL books of which I am aware. Yes, I have and love resources from John Seymour, Gene Logsdon, Sepp Holzer, Joel Salatin, a HUGE amount of permaculture texts, gardening, homesteading, grass farming, sustainability, etc., WHICH ARE IMMEASURABLY VALUABLE, but this is right up there with the best. I enthusiastically echo several other excellent reviews, but cannot understand the scathingly negative ones. For my purposes, Ben has written a wonderfully refreshing blend of PRACTICAL and possible permaculture homesteading book from his PERSONAL experience. I've plenty of books gathering dust telling me what to do and what should work...but not many willing to admit when it doesn't (particularly the permaculture books). It is concise despite covering an impressive array of material. Not everything that "experienced" old-timers do works equally well in all situations and I appreciate the author's honest reporting of what is or is not working historically and currently on his particular property at various stages of its development/reclamation. It often takes several years of working with a property to get a feel for what it wants and needs in terms of plants, animals, water, amendments...especially if one's experience is with vastly divergent enterprises and climatic challenges. Regardless of what we know (or think we know), one can always learn from others' successes, mistakes, ideas, experience. While most of the charts & graphs were not helpful for my personal learning styles, no doubt other folks loved them. He wisely presented the material in various formats to reach the widest audience. I appreciate Ben's willingess to share their project journey thus far and look forward to his subsequent reports...books.

I am not quite finished with this book. In fact, I keep re-reading the first few chapters. I have several permaculture books, but for some reason this one is combining the theoretical and philosophical with the 'nuts and bolts' in a way that is clear and, most importantly, encouraging and inspiring for ME, on MY property. I have been carrying this book with me everywhere and reading it in digestible bits (there is a LOT there). Mean while, I find I am seeing the world around me in new ways. This book is transforming me from a person who only sits on the couch and reads good books, to a person who is out there actually creating what the books inspire me to dream.

P.S. Everyone in America should read the chapter on systems principles: I have even been applying the ideas to my work place and housework schedule to make the function more appropriately! Not what the author intended, I am sure, but it does speak volumes about applicable nature of the ideas presented.

The second edition of The Living Landscape has came out nine years after the first. The first, in fact, was published in 1991, it received an ASLA Merit Award for Communications in 1993, and then it was translated into Italian in 1994, where it was very well received among scholars and students of planning as well as in the schools of architecture throughout the country.
The very first difference between the two editions is the publishing series. The first did not form part of a series while the second is now in the McGraw-Hill "Professional Architecture" series. The Professional Architecture series is devoted to giving helpful tools to practitioners who are on the field and The Living Landscape provides a very wide set of how-to and why-to-do-it instructions, where-to-keep information, and best practices examples to learn from, organized around an eleven-step Ecological Planning Model. I consider The Living Landscape a refined, high-level professional handbook devoted to enhance the toolbox of any present or future planning practitioners.
The Living Landscape II edition, as was the first, is built around a scheme of eleven steps called "Ecological Planning Method" briefly presented in the first chapter and used as a step-by-step pattern to guide readers into the organization of a planning process. The "Ecological Planning Method" is a framework for presenting information to decision-makers, and to display "a common language, a common method among all those concerned about social equity and ecological parity" (p. 9). The approach to planning presented by Steiner is innovative for two reasons. The first is the incorporation of ecology in planning - briefly "the use of biophysical and sociocultural information to suggest opportunities and constraints for decision making about the use of the landscape" (pp. 9-10). The second reason is the author's stress on the citizen's involvement in almost every step of his method. These two issues, even if they are the prime themes of the book, are prudently embedded into the body of the full text. Ecology and citizen involvement are the leitmotif of the entire book which is composed of a precise combination of techniques and tools presentation, useful references to literature, light - but effective - revocations of the theoretical frameworks on the issues, and application examples deriving from real plans or projects.
The eleven-step Ecological Planning Model goes from the identification of problems and opportunities (step 1) and the establishment of goals (2) to inventories and analysis at regional (3) and local level (4). It proceeds with the realization of detailed studies (5) and the definition of planning concepts (6). The landscape plan (7) follows and it is directly assessed and criticized by citizens (8), who are involved and educated along the whole process-phasing. Design exploration (9) comes next and the study of the implementation of the plan and projects (10) precedes the administration (11) that is the last step of the model. The Ecological Planning Model is linear in its descriptions (the book chapters - excluding the introduction and the conclusion - are devoted to deepen every single step, with some minor exceptions), but the steps are strongly interactive. In the graphic scheme of the model (p. 11), solid and dashed arrows between the steps emphasize the necessity and the opportunity of feedback and retroactions in order to monitor the previous results.
Citizen involvement is the center of the model. Almost every step is addressed to inhabitants and a systematic educational and citizen involvement effort occurs throughout the process. The model, between the last step - administration - and the first - problem and/or opportunity identification -, presents a dashed arrow in order to accent that problems and opportunities facing the region and the goals addressed that may be altered by time, occurrences and circumstances.
Compared to the first edition, the structure of the Ecological Planning Model and of the book contents remains unchanged in the second, but the book has some 120 more pages. Graphic design of tables and figures has been enhanced - a four-color page section was added to present the GIS maps of the Desert View Tri-Villages Area (Arizona) and of the Camp Pendleton study area (California), two of the many new examples used along the entire book. New photographs, mostly authored by Steiner, follow the entire text. Sources and references have been updated including recent books and articles on the matters. New examples, as said before, have been included in this edition to present more recent application of techniques and tools explained and illustrated along the text. The final glossary, one of the many useful tools of the book, has been enlarged with 46 new entries bringing the total to 350.

Dr. Steiner demonstrates in his book that ecological planning is just not a static plan-making process, but rather a dynamic process that requires consistent and meaningful input from stakeholders. In addition, he sees plan-making as a process that has implications for different scales of the environment, from the nation to the neighborhood. He stresses that the ecological planning process does not end when the plan is finished, but rather the process continues through the linkage of planning concepts to physical design. Given the strengths of this book, it is an essential volume for the library of any professional or student in the disciplines of the built environment and environmental management.

I am a graduate student in landscape ecological planning. I would recommend Dr. Steiner's book for students, professionals and the lay leaders interested in making a difference in their community. The idea of planning is sometimes hard to grasp by communities that are ruled by economics and development,not ecology. Dr. Steiner shows us step by step how to include ecology into communities and how that may give us other alternatives that we may not have considered.
The use of case studies in this book enhances the practical application of ecological planning in real world situations.
I would recommend this book for anyone interested in ecology, planning or being part of your community's future.

Dr. Raymond Weil, Professor, University of Maryland College Park

B.S. in Crop Science from Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI, 1970.

M.S. in Soil Science from Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, 1973.

Ph.D. in Soil Ecology from Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA, 1977.



Elected Fellow in 2003 of both the Soil Science Society of America and the American Society of Agronomy.



Weil has been active in soil science research since 1972 and has made many contributions in the areas of nutrient cycling and management, environmental impact of soil management, and assessment of soil quality. His current research is focused on the assessment and improvement of soil quality and organic matter. He has conducted research in several countries outside the United States, including Ethiopia, Chad, Brazil, Honduras, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Tanzania. In addition to his teaching at the University of Maryland, he has conducted many training workshops for such agencies as the USDA, The World Bank, The Rodale Research Institute, and the International Food Policy Center.



Dr. Weil has authored or coauthored more than 100 scientific publications in soil science and related areas.





Dr. Nyle Brady

Dr. Brady has, since 1947, worked in education, research and research administration, focusing on both international and U.S. issues. He is past president of the SSSA and served six years as Editor-in-Chief of the SSSA Proceedings and is Emeritus Professor at Cornell University. He has served in leadership positions with Cornell University, the International Rice Research Institute, USAID, the United Nations Development Programme and the World Bank. He is recognized around the world as author and co-author of eleven editions of the world's most widely used soil science textbook, The Nature and Properties of Soils.

Wetland and other water-logged soils are of special importance in providing particular ecosystem services such as hydrological buffering, organic carbon storage, habitat and biodiversity source. Sediments play a role of similar importance as components of the aquatic environment at the bottom of water bodies. Both have in common that they also act as sinks for recalcitrant chemicals and as such are increasingly loaded with trace elements of anthropogenic origin. Due to the dominance of anaerobic conditions, the fate of trace elements in water-logged soils and sediments is governed by very different processes and mechanisms in these environments as compared to well-aerated soils. Against this backdrop, it is all the more remarkable how little we still know about these processes and the factors driving them. This book thus is very timely. It is also very comprehensive. In eighteen chapters written by experts in the respective fields, it gives the latest findings and insights into physicochemical factors and reactions controlling the speciation and binding of heavy metals and metalloids in water-logged soils and sediments, their bioavailability and the assessment of associated risks for humans and other recipients, and also on established remediation technology. Several chapters have a focus on redox-sensitive metals and metalloids such as arsenic, selenium, chromium and uranium. Some deal with new contaminants such as rare earth elements, others with ‘usual suspects’ such as cadmium and zinc. While various contributions are devoted to more fundamental aspects such as the kinetics of sorption and desorption processes or the mechanisms governing the retention and mobility of nanoparticles in aquatic environments, others provide insight into the role of particular environments such as paddies and other temporary flooded soils for trace element behavior or present specific case studies, e.g. on the fate of subsurface chromium on the Hanford site. In summary, this book not only fills an important gap in advancing our understanding of the environmental behavior of trace elements in waterlogged soils and sediments, but also gives valuable advice for those applying this knowledge in risk assessment, remediation and management of contaminated wetlands and aquatic environments.

About the Author




Jörg Rinklebe is a professor for soil and groundwater management at the University of Wuppertal (Germany). From 1997 to 2006, Dr. Rinklebe worked as a scientist and project leader at the department of soil sciences at the UFZ Centre for Environmental Research Leipzig-Halle, Germany. He studied ecology for one year at the University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom (1992–1993). He studied agriculture, specializing in soil science and plant nutrition, at the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg, Germany, and earned his PhD in soil science at the same university. Currently his research is mainly focused on wetland soils, sediments, waters, plants, and the related pollution (trace elements and nutrients) and biogeochemical issues. He also has a certain expertise in remediation of soils and soil microbiology. Professor Rinklebe is internationally recognized, particularly for his research in the area of the redox-chemistry of trace elements in flooded soils. He has published many scientific papers in international and national journals as well as numerous book chapters. He serves on several editorial boards (Geoderma, Water, Air, and Soil Pollution, Ecotoxicology, Archive of Agronomy and Soil Science). He is also a reviewer for many international journals. He has co-organized several special symposia at various international conferences, such as Biogeochemistry of Trace Elements (10th, 11th, 12th, and 13th ICOBTE) and International Conference on Heavy Metals in the Environment (15th, 16th, and 17th ICHMET). He has been an invited speaker at many international conferences.



Anna Sophia Knox is a fellow scientist at the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) in Aiken, South Carolina, where she conducts research on the remediation of contaminated sediments and soils and development of new materials for the stabilization of contaminants. She earned a PhD (1993) in agronomy and soil science and was certified as a professional soil scientist by the Soil Science Society of America on December 20, 1999. Dr. Knox has 25 years of responsible experience in environmental science, with emphasis on the biogeochemistry and geochemistry of metals and radionuclides in natural and contaminated soils/sediments; the transformation, transport, and bioavailability of contaminants; and the remediation of contaminated soils/sediments. She has published more than 95 scientific papers, book chapters, and patents; has presented numerous papers at scientific meetings and international conferences; and has organized several sessions and special symposia on contaminants in soils and sediments for international conferences/meetings such as the International Conference on Remediation of Contaminated Sediments, International Conference of Biogeochemistry of Trace Elements (10th,11th, 12th, and 13th ICOBTE), International Conference on Heavy Metals in the Environment (15th, 16th, and 17th ICHMET), and others. Dr. Knox is nationally and internationally recognized as one of the leading authorities in the area of active capping research. She has received several awards, including a DOE Women of Excellence in Science and Engineering award and several Key Contributor Awards because of crucial contributions to the strategic goals of the Savannah River National Laboratory. Her participation in professional societies includes serving on the editorial boards for both the International Society of Environmental Forensic Journal and Journal of Archives of Agronomy and Soil Science.



Michael H. Paller is a senior fellow scientist at the Savannah River National Laboratory in Aiken, South Carolina. He earned a PhD in zoology at Southern Illinois University and has over 35 years of experience studying aquatic ecosystems. Areas of particular interest include fish and macroinvertebrate ecology, environmental impact assessment, aquatic toxicology, ecological risk assessment, remediation of contaminated sediments, the fate and transfer of radionuclides through aquatic ecosystems, and the application of passive samplers to measure environmental contamination. Recent activities include the development of ecological risk assessment protocols for the Savannah River Site, a 780-km2 U.S. Department of Energy facility in South Carolina, and a multiyear effort to develop ecological reference models for coastal plain streams on Department of Defense installations in the southeastern United States. Dr. Paller has served on the editorial board of the American Fisheries Society, has served on several river basin committees, and has helped to organize special symposia on the fate and transport of metals in sediments. He is the author of over 140 refereed publications and technical reports and one book. Dr. Paller also serves as a faculty member at Georgia Regents University in Augusta, Georgia, where he teaches biology and environmental science.
