유교 사회에서 유교, 공자를 극렬하게 비판한 자

철학자 신용철(1937~ ) 선생님은 이탁오에 대한 강의를 이런 평가로 시작했다. 올해 미수(米壽)가 되는 연세인데 그는 강의 70분, 대화 50분을 성성하게 거침없이 이어갔다.

그는 독일 하이델베르크에서 ‘이탁오의 여성관’으로 석박사학위를 했다고 한다. 중국이나 일본이 아닌 독일에서, 당시에 한국에는 자료가 없었는데, 중국자료와 연구가 많았다고 한다. 그는 『이탁오』와 『이탁오와 조선철학』의 저자.
李卓吾(李贄, 1527~1602), 그는 16세기 동아시아의 위대한 3인, 일본의 도쿠가와 이에야스, 한국의 이순신 그리고 중국의 이탁오란다.

이탁오는 남중국의 천주(泉州, 취안저우: 송원 시대 중국의 세계 해양 상업 중심, 최대의 항구)에서 탄생, 제독 정화가 여기서 출항하기도 함, 아랍세계와 소통, 최초의 이슬람 사원, 외조모 이슬람과 교류,
이탁오의 청장년기 시절은 변변하지 못했음, 지방관인 군수 정도가 최고의 벼슬(51세 때 운남성 요안부(姚安府)의 지부(知府)가 되었다가 쉰네 살 때 그만둔 것이 전부), 40대에 양명학 수용.

이탁오의 성격:
<자찬(自贊>에서 그는 자신의 성질은 편협하고, 성급하며, 얼굴표정은 거만하고, 마음은 미치광이라고 스스로 평했다. 사람들과 교제 범위는 아주 좁고, 만나면 매우 친밀해지지만, 상대를 미워하면 그와 절교하고 나아가 평생 그 사람을 고통스럽게 하려고 한다고 말했다.

그리고 실제로는 따뜻한 옷, 풍성한 음식을 바라지만 절개를 지키기 위해 굶어 죽은 백이와 숙제를 담고자 한다는 등, 이상과 실상, 말과 행동, 즉 입과 뱃속이 몹시 다르다고 했다. 이러한 자기 평가를 말 그대로 받아들여 선 안될 것이다. 여기에는 반어적 분위기가 넘쳐난다. <고결설>에서 그는 고결함을 좋아하기에 오만하고 성급하며 마음이 좁다고 말하기 때문이다.

그는 권세나 부 등 외적인 것에는 일절 신경 쓰지 않고, 어떤 사람이 가지고 있는 내적인 것(착하고 좋은 점)만을 바라보려 애썼다. 암튼 그는 자질구레한 규율을 죄다 무시했다. 그는 스님이 되어서도 삭발은 했지만 수염은 길렀고, 나는 실제 유자다라고 하면서 유자의 관을 쓴 삭발유관의 역설, 모순의 괴짜였다.

이탁오의 성격은 지극히 독선적인 데다가 외곬수였다. 그는 사람들과 시비를 즐겼으며, 매사에 도전적이고 전투적으로 대했다. 게다가 기행을 좋아하고, 반유교적이고 파괴적 언사를 자주 써서 당대 사회에서 큰 주목을 끌었다. 결국, 그는 당대 명나라 사상계에서 이단으로 몰리게 되었다. 1602년 부패한 관료층의 탄압을 받아 '도를 혼란케 하고 세상을 미혹하게 했다'라는 죄목을 받아 사상범으로 체포되었고, 옥중에서 스스로 목을 베어 자결했다. 향년 76세.

“왜 그렇게 못된 책을 많이 썼는가?”라는 심문에 대해, 노인은 “내가 많은 책을 썼지만, 모두 성인의 뜻에 합당하여 잘못된 것은 없다”고 역설적으로 대답했다.

1602년 3월 15일 옥리에게 머리를 깎아달라 했다가 그의 칼을 빼앗아 목을 찔러 자결하였다. 그가 썼던 <다섯가지 죽음에 관한 글(五死篇)>에서, “나를 알아주지 않는 사람들에게 죽음으로서 나의 분노를 씻어낼 것”이라고 예언한 그대로를 실행에 옮긴 것이다.

허균이 조선의 이탁오다. 연암과 다산, 영재 이건창 등이 사상 계승, 특히 문학("성령설(性靈說)"에서 계승
허균은 그의 책을 태웠지만 道를 태울 순 없었다고 말함,

<焚書>
이 책이 1-2권으로 번역되었구나.
자신의 책을 읽고 난 다움에는 태워버려라, 했다고 한다. 그러나 묘하게도 태우면 태울수록 더 많이 찍었다고 한다.

자신은 50세까지 한 마리 개였다고 말한다. 무슨 말인가? 개는 한 마리가 짖으면 옆에 있던 개도 영문도 모르고 따라 짖는다. 당시 유학자들은 모두 개에 불과하다. 영문도 모르고 선생을 따라 公子曰 읊어대니 ‘개’가 아닌가? 이런 독설 때문에 유학자들로부터 핍박을 당한다.

"“나는 어려서부터 성인의 가르침이 담긴 책을 읽었지만 그 내용이 무엇인지 알지 못했고, 공자를 존경했지만 공자에게 어떤 존경할 만한 점이 있는지 알지 못했다. 그야말로 난쟁이가 광대놀음을 구경하다가 사람들이 잘한다고 소리치면 따라서 잘한다고 소리지르는 격이었다. 나이 오십 이전의 나는 정말로 한 마리의 개에 불과했다. 앞의 개가 그림자를 보고 짖으면 나도 따라서 짖어댔던 것이다. 만약 남들이 짖는 까닭을 물어오면 그저 벙어리처럼 쑥스럽게 웃기나 할 따름이었다.

오호라! 나는 오늘에서야 우리 공자를 이해했고 더 이상 예전처럼 따라 짖지는 않게 되었다. 예전의 난쟁이가 노년에 이르러 마침내 어른으로 성장한 것이다.” -<속분서> ‘성교소인(聖敎小引)’"

공자는 재가 출가자이고, 석가는 捨家 출가자이다.
공자를 구을기(丘乙己)라고 불렀고, 공자를 역사적 존재로 환원시키며 유불선의 통합적 지식을 꿈꿨다.
성인 공자의 시비 표준을 부정하고, 폭군 진시황을 찬양하며 패도의 이사(李斯), 여불위의 재능을 칭찬했다.

이탁오는 54세까지 지방의 여러 높지 않은 관직을 거친 유교적 교육을 받은 학자이며 관리였다. 그가 퇴직 후 머리를 깎고 호북성의 절경인 조그만 불사 지불원(芝佛院)에서 불교적 분위기를 호흡하면서 20년 이상 머무는 동안 불교를 포함해 광범위하게 생명을 걸고 학문을 탐구 할 때의 저서이다. 삶의 참 된 진리(道)를 열정적으로 추구하며, 세상의 부조리를 극히 예리하면서도 거리낌없이 비판하고 부정했던 모습을 그 속에서 가장 생생하게 볼 수 있는 격정적인 삶과, 철학 및 문학의 향기로 가득 찬 유명한 저서이다.

모두 6 권의 『분서』중 첫 권과 둘 째 권은 친구나 아는 사람들과 주고받은 서신이며, 세 째 와 네 째 권은 다양한 주제의 수필 같은 『잡술(雜述)』이고, 다섯째 권은 역사를 읽은 후에 쓴 『독사(讀史)』이며 마지막 권은 그의 시로 구성되었다.

특히 스님과 주고받은 편지가 유명하다.
<藏書>에선 수천명의 인물들의 평가를 뒤집어 함, 측천무후를 칭찬한게 대표적인 예.
이탁오의 여성관은 당시로서 파격적이다. 여자가 남자의 재주가 없는 고것이 바로 여자의 덕이다. 음양남녀론을 여성주의적으로 이해했고, 君臣, 父子, 夫婦, 長幼, 朋友의 순서에서 ‘夫婦’를 맨 앞에 세웠다.
이탁오는 유학의 도통론(요순-공맹-주자)을 공격, 한당시대가 도통이 있었던 시대보다 더 낫지 않은가? 주자학자들에게는 견딜 수 없는 풍자일 것이다.

그는 지금 중화인민공화국에서 ‘한 시대 최고의 스승(一代宗師)’ 과 ‘중국 5천 년 역사 83인의 문화 영웅의 한 사람’으로 추앙받고 있다.

<童心書>
문학에 심대한 영향
마음에서 자연스럽고 천진하게 우러나오는 童心 = 眞心 = 眞人
성인의 道가 순수한 사람에게는 정확하게 들어왔는데 공부했다고 하는 사람들에게는 엉터리로 앉아 있다.
“대저 동심(童心)이란 진심(眞心)이다. 만약 동심을 불가한 것이라고 한다면, 이는 진심을 불가한 것이라고 하는 것이 된다. 대저 동심은 거짓(假)을 끊어버린 순수한 참(眞)으로서 인간이 최초에 가졌던 본심이다. 만약 동심을 잃어버리면, 곧 진심을 잃어버리는 것이고, 진심을 잃어버리면 곧 참된 사람(眞人)을 잃어버리는 것과 같다. 사람으로서 참(眞)되지 않으면 다시는 완전히 그 처음(初)이 없게 되는 것이다. 동자(童子)란 사람의 처음이고, 동심은 마음의 처음이다. 대저 마음의 처음을 어떻게 잃어버릴 수가 있겠는가. 그런데 동심은 어떻게 갑자기 잃어버리게 되는 것인가. 대개 처음에는 견문(見聞)이 귀를 통해 들어와 마음의 주인 노릇을 하면서 동심이 상실된다.” -<분서> ‘동심설(童心說)’"

동경대학에서 미소구치 유죠 교수와 그의 직제자들과 이탁오와 일본사상을 논변했던 일이 어제 같은데 미새구치교수는 귀천했고 제자들은 현역으로 맹활동중이지만 이탁오는 거의 잊혀가고 있다. 산천은 의연한데 인걸은 간데 없는 쓸쓸함을 느끼던 차에 오랜만에 old familiar faces를 만난 듯한 기쁨(착각?)에 삶맛이 나는 아침이다.

It seems to me that when I think of people who are spiritually well and happy–and here I’m positing that happiness ought to be the goal of religion, not only our happiness but the happiness and well-being of others–people who are spiritually well and happy have all gone through a process of unlearning some of the first things they were taught about God.

Unlearning God: How Unbelieving Helped Me Believe

My name is Phil Gulley. I live in Danville, about 20 miles west of Indianapolis. I’m the pastor of Fairfield Friends Meeting in Camby, IN which is just south of the Indianapolis International Airport, and I serve as the pastor there. I also write books.

Unlearning Two Major Beliefs

First was the belief that there was a one true church, that a human institution had somehow become the only legitimate community in which folks could gather and worship and learn and grow together. So I had to unlearn that, that there was a “true church.”

And the other thing that I had to unlearn was what I learned and were called the “omni”s. That is–God is omnipotent, God is omniscient, God is omnipowerful (all-powerful), which lasted for a long time, until I grew old enough to start having bad things happen to people I loved.

Questioning God

These were people of faith, wonderful people. It became impossible for me to sustain the belief that God was both all-loving and all-powerful and all-knowing. I just could not continue in that belief. Once I released that, I liked God a lot more.

Being Angry with God

Before I began unlearning the first things I was taught about God, I would have moments in my life where I was very angry at God because the world seemed to me to be a very unfair place. And it is unfair. But I had convinced myself that the reason for that was because of God’s failure to act. When you see evil and when you believe that is a consequence of God’s failure to act, it is very difficult to sustain any kind of relationship with God, because you just have this spiritual resentment.

Growing Into a Healthy Relationship with God

When you no longer have the need to say everything in this life happens because of God, or doesn’t happen because of God, then you are free to have a much healthier relationship, not unlike parents and children.

Children, when they’re young, think their parents are so powerful that they can do anything, which is a good belief to have when you’re young and insecure and need so much. But if an adult child has that opinion of their parents, wouldn’t we say that they have failed to grow? And yet so many adult Christians persist with this belief that God can do anything and that everything that happens is for a reason and that God knows the reason and God has caused this thing to happen. I think that is a patently unhealthy view of the power and personality of God.

Letting Go

It’s hard to like a God who is all loving and all powerful and then doesn’t do something when innocent people suffer. But when you let go of that burden and you no longer have the need to have God be all-powerful or all-knowing, it really liberates your theology.
