The inspiring true story of David Nyuol Vincent, a Sudanese refugee who survived famine, wars and 17 years in refugee camps to build a new life in Australia.
David Nyuol Vincent was a little boy when he fled southern Sudan with his father, as war raged in their country. He left behind his distraught mother and sisters, his village and his childhood.
For months David and his father walked across southern Sudan, barefoot, desperately searching for safety, food and water. They survived the perilous Sahara Desert crossing into Ethiopia only to be separated. David was taken in and trained as a child soldier, surviving the next 17 years of his life alone in refugee camps. Life was a relentless struggle against starvation, air bombings and people determined to kill him and his people.
In 2004 David was offered a humanitarian visa as one of the Lost Boys of Sudan and was resettled to Australia. Traumatised by what he had seen and endured, he went about the slow and painful process of making a new life for himself-a life away from hunger, away from guns, away from death. A life where David is determined to improve the plight of his people both here in Australia and back in South Sudan.
Told with frankness and humour, this is the powerful account of a young man's resilience. The story of a boy who refused to die.

David Nyuol Vincent's remarkable journey fleeing South Sudan
David Nyuol Vincent was just a boy when he was forced to leave his village in South Sudan.
Broadcast date: Monday 28 April
David and his father fled their village of Wau when civil war broke out.
Walking across the Sahara Desert to get to a camp across the border in Ethopia, they were exposed to extraordinary scenes of destruction.
David was brought up to hate the men who drove him and his people out of their country; he endured harsh training as a boy soldier but he wasn't selected to fight.
He's now an Australian citizen and deeply involved in community work, and founder of an all-Sudanese refugee soccer team in Melbourne.
Richard spoke to David when his memoir, The Boy Who Wouldn't Die, was published by Allen & Unwin in 2012.
Details of David's work are on his website.

What I liked about this book, the author David, is totally honest and is prepared to reveal both his strengths and weaknesses together with how he has been able to come to terms with his own emotions during almost unbearable crises. As a mentor for the South Sudanese community and an outstanding citizen of Australia, I am confident he will continue to achieve amazing things and make attitudinal changes for the better a reality in both countries. 5.0 out of 5 stars A gripping story of war, waste and new hope
Reviewed in the United States on 9 August 2012

The dramatic story of a Lost Boy from Sudan who ended up in Australia is told in this book by David Nyuol Vincent and Carol Nader. It is an emotional journey about war and cruelty, loss of childhood and innocence, great risks taken in times of great desperation, daily struggles for survival, years wasted in refugee camps, and ultimately kindness, generosity and new hope for a new country.
David's story begins with his childhood in the village of Wau, in the Western Bahr el Ghazal state of southern Sudan. The war between the predominantly Muslim northern Sudan and predominantly Christian southern Sudan started affecting the village, and each morning there was news of more people who had been killed during the night. Then the day came when David's father decided it was time for him to leave.
After a long and dangerous walk across a desert in which many people perished, David ended up in a training camp for child soldiers in Ethiopia, where he acquired soccer skills but had not yet been selected for deployment when Ethiopian rebel forces hunted them out of the country and David eventually reached a refugee camp in Kenya where he remained for more than a decade before finally achieving resettlement in Australia.
In addition to providing a gripping adventure story, the book provides some helpful insight into the struggles that Sudanese refugees have been through and the traumas that many of them are still experiencing. I highly recommend it to anyone who lives near migrants from Sudan or who is worried about how they might integrate into a developed country.

This is an amazing story of courage & triumph! David Nyuol Vincent is an amazing man who proves to us that where there is a will, there is a way. In this story you get an incredible insight into just what a man like David has to overcome in order to not only stay alive, but to eventually obtain freedom and escape from the terrible evils that go on in countries like Sudan. I'd recommend this book to anyone who has ever wanted to just "give up" on their dreams, you might learn something from this story.
