This book is colloquial and conversational. It presents an overview of Platonism from the master himself to Emerson in the context of contemporary debates. The author is a devoted Platonist, and his presentation of their doctrines is perfectly orthodox, above all in the absolute priority he gives to intellectual vision, the Vision of the Good. This emphasis alone is a huge achievement. The book is remarkable also for its generosity of tone. To the enlightened eye, no doubt, everything is full of Being. But it is difficult to maintain at all times that warm dispassion which takes the whole world under its wing. The author achieves this simply through the quality of his discriminations. So sharp and apt are the distinctions he makes between competing contemporary doctrines the book is continually illuminating and never tendentious. This reader was forever saying “Ah!”

Arthur Versluis holds a doctorate from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and has published numerous books and articles. Among his books are

After several years of reading Versluis and becoming a bit disenchanted, have recentlry had my interest re- ignited by an interest in Platonism and theurgy. I choose this book as the beginning of a three part excursion back into Versluis' writings-this book to be followed by Restoring Paradise and Platonic Mysticism. So far I am not disappointed. Look for updates in reviews the other two books.

i really enjoyed versluis' book. he delves into the history of magic while discussing technique of ritual. he discusses alchemy, astrology, the symbolism of the alter and other aspects of magical practice. he discusses alchemy as the purification of consciousness and awareness. he also mentions the importance of religion as it is tied into magic. he keeps a modern perspective on the subject which i like. my only complaint about the book is the writing style. his sentences are very long and cumbersoome. reminds me of gurdjieff's writing. versluis needs a better, or stronger editor to tell him to cut his sentences in half. a good book nevertheless.

This book holds a deep esoteric truth, and clarrifies that with multiple examples. That truth is this, magic is the means to relization of self as part of the one. Magic is not a means of putting a spell on anything for personal power and ego, nor is it a means to create the philosophers stone, which in itself is ego. The book hold deep esoteric truth for those who want to transend their ego using the western mystery traditions thereby to become the true master. This volume is quite short will not take you all the way there but it is a great start. 

It is a very good explanation of basic magical tools and why they are used and a list of further reading at the back to go on from this introductory volume. I recommend this book if you want to read the truth.

This is the first serious book of wisdom I read, during my teenage years. I probably found it in the local library. I found it very easy to read yet highly profound and thought-provoking and it set me on a path of deeper understanding as a fellow mystic and philosophical explorer. Thank you Mr Versluis!

Perennial Food for thought. I really enjoyed the book. it's not for the faint of heart. You need to truly listen and sometimes re-listen to the concepts being conveyed.

Extremely interesting and mind boggling
If you are curious about life and the possible meaning of life, this book is for you. I was looking for a book on Pantheism and came across this by fluke. A lucky fluke. loved it!. listening to it again for the 5th time nust to take it all in.

(1) '천박한' 종류든 '고상한' 종류든 인간이 생각하는 모든 종류의 행복, 즐거움, 이익을 부처님은 전부 '먹이 (nutriment)'라 부르셨고, 윤회하는 존재라는 것 자체를 '먹어야 하는 (feeding)'으로 정의.

(2) 음식을 먹어야 이승의 육신이 그 생명을 유지할 수 있듯이 정신적 음식 (사랑, 성취감, 보람, 자존감 등) 역시 정신의 생명을 유지시켜 윤회를 반복시키는데, 존재들은 끊임 없이 먹이를 추구. 하나의 목표를 달성한 후에도 '먹는' 행위 그 자체를 위해 끊임 없이 새로운 목표를 찾고 추구. '재산이 얼마 정도 되면 더이상 원이 없겠다' 싶어도 막상 그게 실현되어 느끼는 행복은 며칠 못 감. 모든 걸 다 가진 것처럼 보이는 이들도 우울증에 걸리고 자살하고 그러는 게 바로 이런 이유. (매찰나 계속 변해 간다는 점에서 불교의 '정신'/'의식'은 힌두교나 기독교의 '영혼'과 다름.)

(3) 의식적으로 하는 모든 행위 (생각과 말 포함. 상카라=fabrication)은 결국 업이 되기에, 먹이추구 행위도 당연히 업이 되며 윤회를 지속시키는 동력이 됨. 따라서 윤회에서 해방되는 해탈을 원한다면 먹이를 끊어 윤회의 연료를 고갈시켜야. 그러기 위해 덜 건강한 먹이 (평범한 인간이 행복이라 생각하는 것)를 줄여 가고 대신 건강한 먹이 (수행의 즐거움)를 늘려 가면서 팔정도의 8요소들을 순서대로 계발해 나가면, 언젠가 윤회의 강을 건너게 됨.

(4) Becoming이라는 건, 내세에서 내가 무엇이 되고 장래에 무엇이 되고 이런 것뿐만 아니라 자잘한 욕망도 포함. 예를 들어 내가 예쁜 옷을 사고 싶다면, 그건 '그 예쁜 옷을 입어서 지금보다 예뻐 보이는 나!'가 되는 만족감=먹이를 얻고 싶기 때문 - 먹이 소비자로서의 측면. 그 옷을 살 돈을 모으는 과정은 먹이 생산자로서의 측면. 내가 원만한 인간관계를 위해 노력하는 것도 '따뜻함, 지지, 응원, 위로 등의 먹이에 둘러싸인 나!'가 되고 싶기 때문. 결국 becoming은 먹이추구에서 기인하고, 먹이추구는 욕망에서 기인하며, 욕망은 '나'라는 관념에 대한 집착에서 기인함. 다시 말해, '나' 관념 => 욕망 => 먹이추구/becoming => 윤회 이렇게 돌아가는 것.

(5) 옷 살 돈을 모으려면 내가 어떤 일을 해야 하고 그 일을 하기 위해 어떤 스펙을 갖춰야 하고 현재 사회나 시대가 어떤 상황이고 등등을 고려해야 하며, 내가 연인이나 친구를 갖고 싶어도 사람들이 어떤 타인에게 호감을 느끼는가 등을 이해해야 함. 내가 내세에 행복하고 싶거나 천국에 가고 싶어도, 이 우주의 본질이나 운영원리를 알아야 함. 즉, 인간, 세상, 우주 등에 대한 관심은 궁극적으로 전부! 먹이추구인 것.

(6) 이렇듯 먹이를 추구하는 과정에서 타인과의 상호작용이 불가피하며, 태어난다는 자체가 이미 부모와 사회의 존재를 전제. 그런데 사람은 저마다 다르고 저마다 자신의 먹이를 끊임 없이 추구하며 살기에 서로 긴장과 갈등을 일으킬 수밖에 없음. 그러므로 내가 세상에서 승자가 되든 패자가 되든 아니면 일방적으로 희생 헌신하는 캐릭터가 되든 스트레스가 따르기는 마찬가지. 먹는 자나 먹히는 자나 먹이추구와 becoming의 과정 자체가 고통인 것. 비건 (vegan)으로 산다 해도 인간의 의식주 비롯 문명 자체가 동식물과 자연의 희생을 직간접적으로 초래. 수행도 결국 먹이추구이지만, 해탈하면 더이상 '먹지' 않아도 되는 완전하고 영원한 행복=자유가 주어져 나도 수고스럽지 않고 나의 먹이추구 과정에서 본의 아니게 다른 존재에게 민폐를 끼칠 일도 아예 없어진다고 하니 그래서 해탈하려고 하는 것이며, 그렇기에 수행하여 해탈하는 일이야말로 최대 최고의 이타행이라고 불교가 말하는 것. (인간들이 세속에서 하는 '이타행'은 본의 아니게 제3자에게 민폐를 끼친다든가 자연을 파괴한다든가 그렇게 됨.)

(7) 그러므로 모든 욕망을 버려야 하는데, 해탈하여 윤회에서 벗어나고 싶다는 것 역시 욕망인지라 결국 윤회로 귀결된다는 것이 딜레마. 이 딜레마를 빠져나가는 방법으로 부처님이 찾아내신 방법 (부처님의 위대함과 천재성은 바로 이 발견에 있음)이 바로, 모든 욕망은 '나'라는 관념에서 기인하니 ‘I am X'이든 ‘I am'이든 ‘나 없다’이든 '나'/'존재'라는 것을 둘러싼 문제들에 대해 다른 생각은 전혀 하지 않고 매사를 오직 인과=4성제=12연기의 관점으로만 생각하라는 것. 그러면 덩어리가 큰 세속적 욕망부터 시작하여 덩어리가 작은 욕망을 거쳐 결국엔 수행의 즐거움이라는 먹이에 대한 욕망이나 해탈에 대한 욕망마저도 내려놓게 됨 - 인과를 이해하기 때문에! 즉, 윤회의 강 건너편으로 데려가는 이 특정한 목적을 위해 고안된 프로그램!이 바로 8정도이며, 따라서 초기경전은 상징/비유/문학으로서가 아니라 마치 의사의 처방전을 읽듯이 읽고서 정확히 이해, 실천해야 함. (좀더 자세한 원리는 '상카라(saṅkhāra)와 명상'을 보시기를.)

(8 ) 물론 해탈의 완성은 뗏목( =수행과 해탈에 대한 욕망, 관념, 노력)마저 내려놓음으로써 성취되는데, 이건 8정도를 완성하여 윤회의 강 건너편에 도달이나 하고 난 후에! 걱정할 일. 처음부터 무조건 아무 생각/분별도 않는 것이 수행이 아니고, 번뇌에 머물지도 않고 번뇌에서 벗어나려 하지도 않고 모든 걸 다 받아들이면서 생긴 대로 살다 죽는 것 역시 수행이 결코 아니며, 소위 말하는 무언가(Y)를 '내려놓기' 위해서는 (i) Y를 발생시키는 원인, (ii) Y를 소멸시키는 원인, (iii) 내가 Y에 끌리는 이유, (iv) 궁극적으로 Y가 가져올 고통, (v) Y에서 벗어나는 방법의 5가지에 대한 정확한 분별, 이해가 선행되어야 한다고 초기경전은 설명. 멍때리는 건 명상도 아니고 내려놓는 것도 아니며 (분별력 없는 평온을 초기경전은 녹조라떼에 비유), '내려놓아야지!' 생각만 한다고 내려놓아지는 것도 아님.

(9) 해탈하여 윤회에서 벗어나고 싶다는 것 역시 욕망인지라 결국 윤회로 귀결된다는 것이 부처님이 극복하셔야 했던 하나의 딜레마. 또 다른 딜레마는, 인간의 수준을 뛰어넘는 해탈에 대해 인간의 수준에서 만든 불완전한 언어를 갖고 설명해서 인간들을 이해시키셔야 했다는 것. 3차원에 사는 인간에게 11차원을 이해시켜야 하는 것 같은, 혹은 구구단도 못 외운 사람에게 미적분을 이해시켜야 하는 것에 비유될 수 있는..

불교 공부를 하려면 어떻게 하면 좋겠냐고 묻는 분들이 가끔 계십니다. 저는 우선 두 가지의 기준을 강조하고 싶습니다.
.
첫째는, 자신이 하는 말/글의 매문장다마! 초기경전의 근거를 일일이! 명시하는 분의 얘기만 고려하시라는 것입니다. 부처님의 가르침은 Dhamma (經藏; 디가 니까야, 맛지마 니까야, 상윳따 니까야, 앙굿따라 니까야, 쿠다카 니까야의 5종)와 Vinaya (律藏) 뿐입니다. 매문장마다! 초기경전의 근거를 일일이! 대시는 분이 아니라면 그 분은 '부처님의 가르침을 전달하는 분'이 아니라 '부처님이 가르쳤다고 오해되는 얘기들에 대한 자신의 주관적 감상을 마치 부처님의 말씀인 양 전달하는 분'일 뿐입니다 - 정확성과 지적정직성의 두 가지 문제를 동시에 안고 있는 것이죠. (무엇이 '진리'인지는 '심오'한지는 어차피 '제 눈의 안경'이니 기준으로서 부적합하고, '불교'라면 부처님의 가르침의 기록인 초기경전에서 시작하고 초기경전에서 끝날 수밖에 없다고 저는 생각합니다. 그 이상은 문화인류학적 관심이 될 뿐이죠.) 암튼 초기경전 해설로 신뢰할 만한 분들로는 Ṭhānissaro 스님, Bodhi 스님, Dhammavuddho 스님, Gunaratana 스님 등이 계신데, 부처님의 가르침이 하나의 '살아 있는 유기체'라는 생각을 제가 한 건 타니사로 스님의 초기경전 해석을 공부할 때 뿐이었습니다. (이런 제 생각도 물론 '제 눈의 안경'이긴 합니다.)

둘째, 가급적 원저자의 원저술어로 어떤 책이든 읽으시기 바랍니다. 저도 초기경전을 기록한 언어인 Pali어 공부는 아직 시작 못 했지만, Ṭhānissaro 스님, Bodhi 스님, Dhammavuddho 스님, Gunaratana 스님은 다행히 영어로 저술, 강의를 하시는데, 한국어가 모국어인 제가 아무리 최선을 다 해 한국어 번역을 한다 해도, 그 분들의 원 저술/강의를 100% 정확하게 전달하는 건 이론적으로도 불가능할 것 같다는 생각이 듭니다. 짧은 스토리를 귓속말로 한 사람 한 사람씩 전달하는 게임을 해 보면, 20명만 지나가도 얘기가 어떻게 왜곡되는지 무척 흥미로운 경험을 하게 되죠. 그 20명 모두가 인지적 인격적으로 훌륭한 사람들인 경우에도 인간의 한계로 인한 honest mistakes가 발생하는 것이구요. 모국어로 해도 이런데 언어와 언어 사이를 가로지르고 게다가 심지어 문화권과 문화권 사이를 가로지르는 번역에 번역이 중첩되면 어떤 참담한 결과가 되겠는지를 늘 기억하셨으면 합니다.
