This is a reality other countries will face. Sustainability, fuel dependance are realities we live with. Without thinking we, particularly in industrialized countries such as the USA, we also rely on large farming methods, as we alter the very content of the soil which we kill with chemical to infuse with other chemical, we kill the biology of the soil and do not realize we are killing our own biology. Embargoes and other lack such as NO fuel forced Cuban to look into proven methods of sustainability. Back to making the soil alive with real manure, real compost they began to resolve problems of feeding the people. The Cuban people is lighter in weight, they nearly eliminated diabetes in the country, they are more than 80% organic. Having no fuel for cars they began to walk, to bicycle to and from they became fit. While Cuba had 4 universities it now has 400. Their people are educated.
This is something everyone should watch, absorb, start thinking and start doing.

Wonderful! Enjoyed this so much! Interesting how a community pulled together and survived despite having oil removed from their lives. Really impressed me that diabetes disappeared from Cuba after the people were growing everything they ate.

We get so little information about Cuba, and most don't realize how severe this crisis was. My students voted to keep this in rotation, they felt it really showed that culture can change, but they also realized an island in a tropical climate under communist leadership is easier to change than in northern USA and a democracy. GREAT FILM>

I guess we were looking for more 'how to do it' information. This is heartwarming, but lacking in nuts and bolts. Still, it is nice to see how they survived. We may all be looking at sharp weight loss very soon (the average Cuban lost 20 lbs. when the oil ran out) and we've probably got more weight to spare than they did.

When the USSR was in full swing, we were told that the little, individually-owned or run lots out-produced the collective farms, because the growers could make money with their produce. In Cuba part of the answer was more individually-owned or run farms - and they too out-produced the bigger, collectives. And the fact that those who hate socialism tend to ignore is that our own family farms (especially those run by the low-tech Amish and Mennonites) tend to out-produce the agribusiness factory farms. Besides which, they are more humane and less polluting. What we should be doing now is preserving and reclaiming lost agricultural land, promoting community gardens, getting rid of useless, costly, water- and petroleum-wasting, environmentally insensitive lawns, and reintroducing horses and other livestock wherever possible. What we are doing instead is the opposite.

I guess we won't learn through anything but pain.

I saw this at a community showing. I loved it and wanted to rent it to see it again from netflix but it was not available so I purchased it. Lots of relevant and useful strategies to cope with the sudden increase of oil prices and shortage of supply. Shows how people had to start riding bikes and farming had to change completely from industrial agriculture to local gardens. I highly recommend this and also the movie about water called: Flow.
