Lee Patrick Strobel (born January 25, 1952) is an American Christian author and a former investigative journalist.[1] He has written several books, including four that received ECPA Christian Book Awards (1994, 1999, 2001, 2005)[2] and a series which addresses challenges to the veracity of Christianity.[3] He also hosted a television program called Faith Under Fire on PAX TV[4] and runs a video apologetics web site.
Early life and education[edit]

Strobel was born in Arlington Heights, Illinois. He received a journalism degree from the University of Missouri and a Master of Studies in Law degree from Yale Law School.[5]
Career[edit]

Lee was a journalist for the Chicago Tribune and other newspapers for 14 years. In 1980, the UPI Illinois Editors Association newspaper award program gave him a first place for public service (the Len H. Small Memorial award) for his coverage of the Ford Pinto crash trial involving a class-action lawsuit against the Ford Motor Company in Winamac, Indiana.[6][7] Strobel later became assistant managing editor of the Daily Herald, before leaving journalism in 1987.[8][9]

Strobel states he was an atheist when he began investigating the biblical claims about Jesus Christ after his wife's conversion. Prompted by the results of his investigation, he became a Christian at the age of 29.[10][11]
Ministry[edit]

Strobel was teaching pastor of Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington, Illinois, from 1987 to 2000.[12] In 2000, he became pastor at Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California.[13] In 2004, he left his post as pastor to host the Christian apologetics show Faith Under Fire.[14] In 2014, he became a teaching pastor at Woodlands Church in The Woodlands, Texas, and a professor of Christian thought at Houston Baptist University.[15]
Recognition[edit]

In 2007, he was awarded an honorary doctoral degree by Southern Evangelical Seminary in recognition of his contributions to Christian apologetics.[16]
Personal life[edit]

Strobel and his wife Leslie have two children and several grandchildren. His daughter Alison is a novelist,[17] and his son Kyle is an Assistant Professor of Spiritual Theology and Formation at the Talbot School of Theology.
Film[edit]

Strobel appeared in the 2016 film God's Not Dead 2.[18]

A film titled The Case for Christ, based on Strobel's book, had its theatrical release in April 2017.[19] The film was directed by Jonathan M. Gunn and is about an atheist reporter who tries to prove Christianity to be a cult.[20] The film was produced by Triple Horse Studios and distributed by Pure Flix Entertainment.[citation needed]

The Case for Christ is a 2017 American Christian drama film directed by Jon Gunn and written by Brian Bird, based on a true story and inspired by the 1998 book of the same name by Lee Strobel. The film stars Mike Vogel, Erika Christensen, Faye Dunaway and Robert Forster, and follows an atheist journalist who looks to disprove his wife's Christian faith. The film was released on April 7, 2017, by Pure Flix Entertainment. It received mixed reviews from critics and grossed $17.6 million against a cheap $3 million budget.

Plot[edit]

In 1980, Lee Strobel is an atheist journalist and investigative reporter for the Chicago Tribune. He and his wife Leslie have a daughter named Alison and are expecting their second child. After getting a very special recognition, Lee and his family go out to celebrate with dinner, where Alison chokes on a piece of candy. One of the patrons, a nurse named Alfie, intervenes and saves Alison. She credits the event to God's will, which Leslie takes to heart.

Leslie and Alfie become friends and start attending a Christian church together. Irritated, Lee unsuccessfully tries to dissuade Leslie. Due to advice from his mentor, Lee sets out to find evidence that proves that the resurrection of Jesus did not happen. Meanwhile, Leslie gives birth to a son, Kyle.

Lee starts gathering information and evidence. Next, he tries to prove that the witnesses were hypnotized, but a psychologist proves him wrong. Lee then tries to gather evidence that Jesus may have not actually died on the Cross, or was taken off, but again, a physician proves him wrong, saying Jesus had to have died on the Cross.

Meanwhile, Lee's estranged father tries to reconcile with him, but Lee brushes him off. His father dies soon after, and then Lee learns that his father truly loved him, which surprises Lee.

Simultaneously to Lee's pursuit to disprove the resurrection of Jesus, he is also investigating a case of a shooting of a police officer. At first, it looks like the convicted man is guilty and an informant for a gang, but Lee proves that the cop shot himself with a secret gun disguised as a pen, and the convict is freed.

Lee tries to get more evidence for his religious investigation, but his mentor explains that whether he chooses to believe or not believe, the last part of proving Jesus' real existence is faith. When a colleague gives him a speech, Lee decides to take the leap of faith and believe. When he tells Leslie about it, they have a happy reconciliation and pray together.

Release[edit]

In the United States and Canada, The Case for Christ was released on April 7, 2017, alongside Going in Style and Smurfs: The Lost Village, and was projected to gross $5 million in its opening weekend from 1,174 theaters.^[6] It ended up debuting to $3.9 million, finishing 10th at the box office.^[7] In its second weekend the film grossed $2.8 million, dropping 30.5% and finishing 9th at the box office.^[8] It grossed over $17 million on a $3 million budget.

Critical response[edit]

According to the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 61% of critics have given the film a positive review based on 28 reviews. The website's critics consensus reads, "The Case for Christ shouldn't be dismissed, but like many faith-based productions, it's better at preaching to the choir than reaching the unconverted."^[9] At Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 50 out of 100 based on six critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".^[10] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film a rare average grade of "A+" on an A+ to F scale.^[7]

Kevin McLenithan of Christianity Today gave the film a "fresh" rating and wrote, "The film may be only intermittently successful, but when it takes its own story seriously rather than treating it as a means to an end, it stands among the best films yet produced by the Christian film industry."^[11] Jackie K. Cooper of The Huffington Post gave the film 6 out of 10 stars and called it "Well made and well acted; the perfect movie for the Easter season."^[12] Michael Foust of the Southern Baptist Texan gave it 4 out of 5 stars and acknowledged he was "skeptical that The Case for Christ could be turned into an enjoyable film but was pleasantly surprised with the on-screen product." Foust added, "It is one of the best films I've seen this year, masterfully weaving a spoonful of apologetics into an engaging plot that will leave moviegoers entertained, educated, and perhaps even inspired."^[13] In a negative review, Roger Moore of Movie Nation gave it only 1.5 out of 4 stars, calling it "unemotional, uninspiring and unconvincing."^[14]

Influx Magazine film critic Steve Pulaski said, "The Case for Christ bears a lot of thematic similarities to its brother in Christ God's Not Dead in the way that it attempts to ignite stirring intellectual debate rather than settling for predictable melodrama. The result is a film with certain appeal, but also certain issues when it comes to its prolific condescension to nonbelievers and skeptics and unnaturally written moments where proselytizing overpowers plot."^[15]

죽음에 관한 사유를 통해 삶의 지혜를 얻는다

우리는 일상에서 수많은 타인의 죽음을 접하며 살고 있다. 죽음은 살아 있는 사람들 사이에서 빈번히 일어나는 현상이다. 자기와 가까운 사람이 죽으면 우리는 장례식에 가서 그의 죽음을 슬퍼하며 안타까워한다. 그리곤 다시 일상으로 돌아와 자신의 삶에 몰두한다. 마치 죽음은 이제 자신과는 상관없는 타인의 일일 뿐이라는 것처럼. 하지만 모든 사람은 반드시 죽음을 경험하며, 나 또한 예외는 아니다. ‘나’라고 불리는 이 생명체도 언젠가는 반드시 죽는다. 그럼에도 우리는 죽음에 대해 진지하게 고민하고 숙고하기를 꺼려한다. 삶에 대한 애착과 더불어 죽음이 삶의 끝이라는 통념, 그리고 이에 대한 막연한 두려움이 작용하고 있기 때문이다. 하지만 삶의 끝이라는 죽음에 대해 진지하게 이해하지 못하고서 어떻게 삶을 제대로 안다고 할 수 있을까? 우리네 삶은 한 발 한 발 죽음을 향해 나아가고 있다. 때문에 삶을 알기 위해서는 필연적으로 삶의 가장자리인 죽음에 대해서 알아야 한다. 그래서 우리는 삶을 이해하기 위해, 삶을 제대로 살기 위해 삶 너머를 묻게 된다. 삶의 끝, 죽음 이후에 우리는 어떻게 되는가? 우리에게 죽음은 무엇인가? 죽음은 그냥 삶의 끝인가, 아니면 또 다른 시작인가?를 묻지 않을 수 없는 것이다.
이 책은 초기불교와 인도·티벳 불교, 선불교, 서양철학과 현대의학 등 각 분야에서 삶과 연관하여 죽음을 어떻게 바라보고 있는가에 대해 각 분야 전문가들의 연구를 모아 한 권의 책으로 엮은 것이다. 각 주제별 요지를 정리하면 다음과 같다.

먼저, ‘초기불교의 생사관’이다. 정준영은 초기경전에서 주로 사용되는 죽음의 두 가지 개념, 마라나marana와 쭈띠cuti로서 죽음을 설명한다. 마라나는 오온의 생리적 기능이 멎는 죽음을 뜻하고, 쭈띠는 죽음을 통하여 한 존재에서 다른 존재로의 이동[윤회]을 의미한다. 일반 범부는 죽는 순간 죽음의 의식이 바로 재생연결식으로 이어짐으로써 의식의 흐름은 지속되어 생사가 반복되는 윤회의 삶을 산다. 한편 수행자는 수행을 통해 여러 가지 신통력을 갖게 되며, 지혜의 완성을 통해 결국 윤회로부터 벗어난다고 설명한다. 또한 죽음에 대한 호기심보다는 ‘어떻게 해야 열반에 이를 수 있는가?’의 물음이 우리에게 보다 더 절실한 질문이라고 보고, 그 수행방법으로 죽음을 관찰하는 ‘사수념死隨念’과 죽은 몸을 관찰하는 ‘부정관’에 대해 상세히 설명한다.
둘째, ‘인도-티벳 불교의 생사관’이다. 안성두는 물질적 세계는 “끊임없는 식의 흐름 속에서 구성되고 수용되고 상호작용하는 것”이라고 전제하고서 대승불교의 생사관을 논한다. 우선 그는 인도불교를 다루는 부분에서 초기불교의 ‘사념死念’을 논하고, 이어 아비달마에서 소개하는 재생에 대한 서로 다른 입장, 즉 중유가 얼마 만에 생유로 바뀌게 되는지에 관한 여러 입장들을 열거한다. 그리고 대승 보살사상이 생사와 열반 그 어느 하나에 치우치지 않고 그 둘을 원만하게 조화시켜 ‘무주처열반의 이상’을 제시하고 있음을 밝힌다. 티벳불교를 다루는 부분에서는 죽음에 대한 예비적 수행단계와 본격적 수행으로서 죽음에 대한 관상법을 현교와 밀교 두 방식으로 설명한다. 특히 죽음의 관상법으로서 ‘무상요가탄트라’의 핵심 수행법을 상세히 소개하고 있다.
셋째, ‘선불교의 생사관’에서 황금연은 인생팔고 중 하나인 죽음이 나머지 일곱 가지 고를 한꺼번에 ‘모두 다 종식시키는 일’임을 언급하고 나서 중국의 선사들은 이러한 죽음을 어떻게 받아들였는가를 탐구한다. 그는 중국 선사들이 삶과 죽음이 하나라는 생사일여의 관점에서 삶과 죽음 그 어느 것에도 집착하지 않는 초연한 태도를 유지했다고 한다. 즉 생사가 없으므로 삶을 좇거나 죽음을 두려워하지 않아 생사에 초연할 수 있다는 것이다. 이어서 그는 이런 깨달음을 얻기 위해 선사들이 행한 수행과 이를 통해 생사일여의 경지에 이른 선사들이 죽음에 임박해서 보여준 다양한 입적의 모습들을 선불교의 역사를 따라가며 다양하게 소개한다. 이를 통해 죽음에서도 자유로운 선가 특유의 생사관을 잘 드러내고 있다.
넷째, ‘현대 서양철학의 생사관’에서 박찬국은 세 명의 현대 실존주의 철학자, 키르케고르와 니체와 하이데거를 중심으로 서양철학에서 죽음이 어떻게 이해되고 있는지를 해명한다. 그에 따르면 인간은 언젠간 죽어야 하는 ‘필연성과 유한성’의 존재이지만, 그럼에도 ‘가능성과 무한성’을 추구하는 존재로서 각자의 삶 속에서 이 두 대립과 모순을 종합해야만 한다고 본다. 또한 죽음 자체나 사후에 관한 존재론적 논의보다는 각자의 삶 속에서 삶의 한계로서의 죽음을 어떤 자세로 받아들일 것인가가 중요하다고 말한다. 이에 따라 극단의 유한성에 매몰되는 속물적 태도나 결정론 내지 운명론적, 허무주의적, 이원론적 태도도 아닌 제3의 길, ‘진정한 종합’의 길을 모색한다. 그 길만이 유한성과 무한성을 아우르는 중도의 길이라고 보며, 위의 세 철학자가 각각 어떤 방식으로 이러한 종합을 논하였는지를 그들의 철학을 중심으로 소개한다.
마지막으로, ‘현대의학의 생사관’에서 우희종은 현대과학적 관점에서 죽음을 ‘개체성의 상실’로 정의하며, 개체가 지닌 고유성의 종말이라는 것을 강조한다. 나아가 그는 생명현상의 개체고유성은 구성적 실체가 없이 ‘관계 속에서 원인과 결과로 빚어진 결과물’이며 죽음과 더불어 개체는 사라져도 ‘나를 이루었고 또 나를 통해 펼쳐진 업은 또 다른 관계의 바다에서 이합집산, 생로병사를 계속해 나갈 것이다’라고 말한다. 그는 현대과학이나 의학에서의 죽음의 정의에는 동의하지만, 현대과학?의학이 죽음을 대하는 기계론적(유물론적) 태도 및 현대사회에서 과학?의학이 죽음에 대해 갖는 막강한 권력, 그리고 그것이 우리의 일상에 미치는 영향에 대해서는 철저하게 비판적이다. 각 생명체의 삶과 고유성이 죽음으로 사라질 때, 그 죽음을 어떻게 받아들이는가는 삶을 어떻게 마무리하는가의 문제이기에 결국 ‘죽음은 삶의 문제’이며, 따라서 죽음을 회피의 대상이 아니라 삶의 과정으로 받아들이는 것이 중요하다고 강조한다.

죽음은 단순히 인생의 끝일까, 또 다른 시작점일까? 불교에서 말하듯 한 삶이 정리되고 또 다른 삶이 시작되는 윤회의 과정일까? 아니면 현대의학의 진단처럼 단순한 개체성의 상실일까? 또는 서양철학에서 말하듯 죽음은 유한이지만 그 안에 무한의 정신이 존재하는 것일까?
살아 있는 우리 모두는 죽는다. 우리가 삶을 중요하게 생각한다면 우리 인생의 일부인 죽음 또한 중요하게 여기고 이에 대해 진지하게 고민해볼 필요가 있다. 이에 대해 불교와 철학과 의학 등 다양한 관점에서 심도 있게 조명한 이 책은 삶과 죽음을 진지하게 고민하는 독자에게 성찰의 계기가 되어줄 것이다. 접기
