Because the Godhead is unique, it cannot be shared or communicated. Because the Godhead is immutable, the Son, who is mutable, must, therefore, be deemed a creature who has been called into existence out of nothing and has had a beginning. Moreover, the Son can have no…READ MORE

In Christianity: Negative mysticism: God and the Godhead

The most daring forms of Christian mysticism have emphasized the absolute unknowability of God. They suggest that true contact with the transcendent involves going beyond all that we speak of as God—even the Trinity—to an inner “God beyond God,” a divine Darkness or Desert…READ MORE

What is the Godhead?

ANSWER
https://www.gotquestions.org/Godhead.html

The term Godhead is found three times in the King James Version: Acts 17:29Romans 1:20; and Colossians 2:9. In each of the three verses, a slightly different Greek word is used, but the definition of each is the same: “deity” or “divine nature.” The word Godhead is used to refer to God’s essential nature. We’ll take a look at each of these passages and what they mean.
==
In Acts 17, Paul is speaking on Mars Hill to the philosophers of Athens. As he argues against idolatry, Paul says, “Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device” (Acts 17:29, KJV). Here, the word Godhead is the translation of the Greek theion, a word used by the Greeks to denote “God” in general, with no reference to a particular deity. Paul, speaking to Greeks, used the term in reference to the only true God.
==
In Romans 1, Paul begins to make the case that all humanity stands guilty before God. In verse 20 he says, “The invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse” (KJV). Here, Godhead is theiotés. Paul’s argument is that all of creation virtually shouts the existence of God; we can “clearly” see God’s eternal power, as well as His “Godhead” in what He has made. “The heavens declare the glory of God;  the skies proclaim the work of his hands” (Psalm 19:1). The natural world makes manifest the divine nature of God.
==
Colossians 2:9 is one of the clearest statements of the deity of Christ anywhere in the Bible: “In him [Christ] dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.” The word for “Godhead” here is theotés. According to this verse, Jesus Christ is God Incarnate. He embodies all (“the fulness”) of God (translated “the Deity” in the NIV). This truth aligns perfectly with Colossians 1:19, “God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him [Christ].”
==
Because the Godhead dwells bodily in Christ, Jesus could rightly claim that He and the Father are “one” (John 10:30). Because the fullness of God’s divine essence is present in the Son of God, Jesus could say to Philip, “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:9).
==
In summary, the Godhead is the essence of the Divine Being; the Godhead is the one and only Deity.
Jesus, the incarnate Godhead, entered our world and showed us exactly who God is: “No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known” (John 1:18; cf. Hebrews 1:3).

What is the Godhead?

==
==
==
==
==

The Leap: The Psychology of Spiritual Awakening

Description

What does it mean to be enlightened or spiritually awakened? In The Leap, Steve Taylor shows that this state is much more common than is generally believed. He shows that ordinary people — from all walks of life — can and do regularly “wake up” to a more intense reality, even if they know nothing about spiritual practices and paths. Wakefulness is a more expansive and harmonious state of being that can be cultivated or that can arise accidentally. It may also be a process we are undergoing collectively. Drawing on his years of research as a psychologist and on his own experiences, Taylor provides what is perhaps the clearest psychological study of the state of wakefulness ever published. Above all, he reminds us that it is our most natural state — accessible to us all, anytime, anyplace.

Description

“In this delightful autobiography, Smith tells us how he became the dean of world religion experts. Along the way we meet the people who shaped him and shared his journey—a Who’s Who of 20th century spiritual America: the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., the Dalai Lama, Aldous Huxley, Timothy Leary, T.S. Eliot, Thomas Merton and Pete Seeger.... A valuable master class on faith and life.”
— San Francisco Chronicle Book Review

As Stephen Hawking is to science; as Peter Drucker is to economics; and as Joseph Campbell is to mythology; so Huston Smith is to religion. Tales of Wonder is the personal story of the author of the classic The World’s Religions, the man who taught a nation about the great faiths of the world, and his fascinating encounters with the people who helped shape the 20th century.

5 POWERFUL SPIRITUAL AUTOBIOGRAPHIES

Spiritual autobiography is a sub-genre of memoir that traces the author’s spiritual journey. Whether you consider yourself a spiritual or religious person or not, these can provide fascinating insight into people’s lives and how experiences—especially trauma—can shape beliefs. They often offer a perspective on how much world-views can change over a lifetime. They’re not necessarily conversion narratives, but Augustine’s Confessions from 400 AD is probably one of the earliest examples. They often illustrate how resilient people can be. These books introduce readers to the authors’ thoughts, families, and cultures in a surprisingly intimate way.

THE SEVEN STOREY MOUNTAIN BY THOMAS MERTON

Merton was raised in a non-religious family. After studying at Cambridge and Columbia, he converted to Catholicism and eventually became a Trappist monk. Published in 1946, his book was one of the most famous and influential spiritual autobiographies of the 20th century. It remains a must-read for introspective, busy people who are looking for a sense of meaning in their lives. For Merton, that meaning was not found primarily in his education or intellect but in his monastic community.

(Please note: the next two books describe surviving genocide in detail. They are important reads but might be too disturbing for some readers.)

LEFT TO TELL: DISCOVERING GOD AMIDST THE RWANDAN HOLOCAUST BY IMMACULEE ILIBAGIZA

In 1994, Ilibagiza, then 22, was visiting her parents at Easter when the genocide that killed almost a million Tutsis began. Although her family was murdered, she survived by hiding in a pastor’s bathroom with several other people. Contrary to what some readers might expect, her Catholic faith and trust in other people was stronger after her trauma. It’s a powerful, fascinating story of surviving genocide and defying hatred.

MAN’S SEARCH FOR MEANING BY VIKTOR FRANKL

This book is partly a spiritual autobiography but also incorporates philosophy and psychology. Frankl was a Jewish Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist who survived four concentration camps, including Auschwitz, where most of his family was murdered. He observed that prisoners with a strong sense of purpose in life were more likely to survive: “[I]t did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us.” He later applied this philosophy to his psychotherapy. Like Ilibagiza’s, Frankl’s resilience and faith in the face of a genocide is remarkable.

(I loved this book long before I interned at Beacon Press, its original publisher.)
MY SPIRITUAL JOURNEY BY THE DALAI LAMA

The current spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism writes compellingly about his early childhood in a small village and the beliefs and causes that matter the most to him. He’s known for his sense of humor, belief in ecumenism (understanding between different religions), human rights, and respect for the environment. This book is a compilation of speeches and writings that show the Dalai Lama’s unique perspectives on everything from handling anxiety to being a responsible citizen.
5. THE MEASURE OF A MAN: A SPIRITUAL AUTOBIOGRAPHY BY SIDNEY POITIER

In 1964, Sidney Poitier became the first black actor to win the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Actor. He often starred in movies that explored racism in groundbreaking ways, such as To Sir with Love and Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner. He faced—and broke—so many barriers that his life story is fascinating to read. Poitier writes in a conversational but dignified style about everything from his childhood in the Bahamas to his varied experiences acting and directing. Despite the subtitle, this is more of a traditional autobiography than a spiritual autobiography.

Writing a Spiritual Autobiography

Lacking catechism or creed, Quakers have always relied upon Friends’ spiritual autobiographies to provide dynamic examples of our faith, from George Fox to John Woolman and beyond. “If you think about it,” says Don McCormick, “some of the most influential books in the history of Quakerism were spiritual autobiographies.”

Don recently taught a course on writing spiritual autobiography at his meeting, and made some important discoveries about himself in the process. “I began to realize that the spirituality in my life also has to do with the quality of my relationships,” he explains. “There was more spirituality infused in my life than I had realized… And I am just loving revisiting that and thinking about it and doing it.”

Transcript:

A while back I taught a course on spiritual autobiography — writing a Quaker spiritual autobiography for my meeting and right now I’m kind of digging more deeply into that and I just find it fascinating. I wanted to write one myself and so I used the course as a way to do that, and there’s something about looking at your whole life and looking at the trends and movement and where you’ve been led that really brings you face to face with the meaning of your life.

Writing a Spiritual Autobiography

My name is Don McCormick and I live in a little town in the Sierra Nevada Mountains called Grass Valley, and I attend Grass Valley Friends Meeting.

The Significance of Spiritual Autobiographies in Quakerism

The whole thing about Quaker spiritual autobiography goes way back to the 1660s because unlike the Catholics who have a catechism or unlike, say, other Protestant sects that have creeds, we don’t have those, and so how do you learn to be a Quaker? Well, one of the main ways back then and still now is by reading spiritual autobiographies; seeing how other Quakers dealt with real problems in ways that are Quaker, and they were a bit more essential back then but we wrote just a tremendous number of them. There are lots and lots of Quaker spiritual autobiographies at the time, and if you think about it some of the most influential books in the history of Quakerism (George Fox’s journal and John Woolman’s journal) were spiritual autobiographies. So there’s a unique kind of connection between spiritual autobiography and Quakerism.

Digging Deeper

As I was doing the writing and hearing what other people were saying I began to realize that there were parts of my life that I hadn’t even recognized were part of my spiritual life. You know you have to ask the question about spiritual aspects of our life when you’re doing a spiritual autobiography and I began to realize that, you know, there are things happening that seem more mundane– originally I just focused on things like spiritual practices like meditation, meeting for worship, and organizations that I was in, but then I also began to realize that the spirituality in my life also has to do with the quality of my relationships. Kindness and love — yeah, there’s kind of an everyday quality about that that I had been missing, so it helped me to realize that there was more spirituality infused in my life then I had realized having to do with relating with my family, the kind of open heartedness that happened as I was in relationship with my son. And I am just loving revisiting that and thinking about it and doing it.

Discussion Questions:

  • 1) What would you include in your spiritual autobiography?
  • 2) What’s an aspect of your spiritual life that “may seem more mundane” or everyday?
