The Logos philosophy presented here is the simplest and most profound of all philosophies, the newest as well as the oldest. There is only one other philosophy of the same importance and that is materialism – in its most extreme form, the attempt to explain man and all life, however complex, in mechanical terms. The latter was dominant up to a few years ago, due to the enormous success of physics and chemistry. All other sciences such as psychology, sociology, economics, etc. attempt to imitate physics, but they fail because they are dealing with human beings who share in the life and power of the Logos which is “unscientific” in its aims and methods.

Those psychologists who reduce human behavior to a simple stimulus-response mechanism are called by Arthur Koestler in his The Ghost in the Machine “Flat earth psychologists” (New York, 1968).

A surveyor in surveying a small piece of ground, perhaps five or ten acres, treats it as if it were flat, but if he is surveying a large area, determining, for example, the boundary of the state of Kansas, he must take into account the curvature of the earth. The psychologists or philosophers who base all reasoning on what can be observed or measured, in other words, those who wish to imitate physics, and so share its success, are like the flat earth surveyors who can ignore the curvature of the earth because they are surveying only a small part of it. Many of our activities can be defined in terms of stimulus and response, but it does not follow that our bodies are simply very complicated machines. Though a mechanistic explanation can be useful to a biologist for purposes of observation and measurement, the life process itself is entirely different.

The thinking part of the brain is concerned with means and not ends. The ends are known only by feeling, which may be feelings of love or hatred. Only the feeling of love would permit the species to survive through cooperation and mutual support. The feeling of hatred destroys the possibility of cooperation which is essential to survival. Hatred destroys the environment on which life depends. Love is not only the greatest virtue, but the most practicable. If those who profess the Christian religion would take seriously the commandments of Christ, our chances of survival would be enormously increased.

For more than sixty years, Friends have used A Guide to Quaker Practice to demystify Friends’ activities. Howard Brinton wrote the guide assuming that somebody would improve on his work as the Religious Society of Friends grew and changed in the second half of the twentieth century. His guide proved more durable than he anticipated. It saw three printings during the 1940s. Following a thorough revision in 1950, it was reprinted ten times before its next revision in 1993.

One explanation for its durability can be found in Brinton’s own writing. Analyzing the sense of the meeting in the lecture, “Creative Worship,” Brinton described Quaker business practice as an evolutionary one. He argued that Friends’ communities tend to adapt slowly to changing conditions rather than revolutionizing themselves constantly. In this light, the gradual revision of Brinton’s guide makes more sense than its wholesale replacement.

As directors and teachers at Pendle Hill for over twenty years, and as nurturers of Pacific Yearly Meeting, Howard (1884-1973) and Anna Brinton (1887-1969) played a significant role in the development of Quakerism in the western as well as the eastern United States. They wrote numerous articles, pamphlets, and books that are still widely read today.1 The Brintons were also actively involved in the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) from its early years after World War I through the 1960s. (The AFSC was founded during the First World War by Friends to provide alternative service for conscientious objectors.)

While they are best known as Quaker educators, or as Pendle Hill Director Dan Wilson called them somewhat grandiloquently, “translucent teachers and ministers of the Light,” the Quaker Peace Testimony was a key element in their lives. Howard Brinton’s writing on the historical basis of the Quaker Peace Testimony has become a classic. His views on the theological and spiritual underpinnings of Quaker social activism have also been extremely influential.

Through their work at Pendle Hill and the AFSC, the Brintons did a great deal to nurture the peace movement and helped to educate a generation of activists.

This aspect of their lives deserves wider recognition and can help to deepen our understanding of how the Quaker peace movement developed during the twentieth century. Their life story exemplifies many of the challenges of nationalism, totalitarianism, and global war that peace activists had to confront during this past century.

This pamphlet focuses on three key periods in the lives of Howard and Anna Brinton:

1) their relief work in Europe for the AFSC after World War I,

2) their peace education work at Pendle Hill, and

3) their ecumenical work and outreach in Asia after World War II.

This study makes use of original sources, including interviews, letters, and an autobiography dictated by Howard Brinton, that have never before been made public.

조선 선조 때 15년간의 당쟁을 분석한 책 제목입니다.

이 질문에 제대로 대응하지 못해서 나라가 망했습니다.
지금 비슷한 질문이  오랜 세월을 지나 응답을 기다리고 있습니다.

'왜 정의와 공정이라는 똑같은 말을 주구장창 외치는 사람들이 편을 갈라 죽기 살기로 싸울까?'

확증편향에 사로잡힌 사람들이나 집단이  자신들은 '선'하고 상대는 ‘악’하다고 싸우는 정치문화를 이제는 벗어나야 합니다.
염불(정의와 공정)보다 잿밥(이익과 권력)에 맘이 가는 사람들이 더 이상 정치의 주류가 되어서는 안됩니다.

그 어려운 조건에서도 우리는 2차대전후 독립한 나라들 가운데서 유일하게 선진국에 진입할 수 있는 밑천을 장만한 나라가 되었습니다. 그런데 가장 그 발목을 잡고 있는 것이 후진적인 정치문화입니다.
낡은 세력들이 차례로 붕괴하고 있지만, 이것을 대체할  새로운 주체가 준비되지 못한 상황에서 지금 우리는 시대착오적인 편가름으로 나라가 심리적 내전에 가까운 분열과 대립의 와중에 있습니다. 거기다가 팬데믹현상이나 기후 변화로 실감하고 있는 지구생태계의 절박한 위기를  만나고 있습니다.
이 이중의 위기를 극복하고 새로운 세상을 열어가는 것은 그 어려운 시련 속에서도 우리 공동체가 간직해온 비원(悲願)이자 홍익인간 재세이화의 위대한 꿈입니다.

열린 마음의 광장에서 대화와 연찬을 통해 지금까지 단정과 확신으로 서로 대립하던 견해들이 실사구시의 자세로 같음을 찾고 다름을 존중하면서 합의를 도출해가는 신선한 경험의 공유야말로 새로운 정치문화를 위한 귀중한 자산이 될 것으로 믿습니다.
나아가 시대에 맞는 정치제도의 창조를 통해 ‘문명 전환’이라는 인류 공통의 과제를 선도적으로 풀어나가는 동력의 작은 부분이라도 될 수 있기를 바랍니다.

그 동안 지리산 연찬을 해오면서  이런 시대의 요청에 작은 힘이나마 보태고 싶은 심정에서 '지리산 정치학교'를 우선  3년 정도 실험을 해보자는데 마음이 모아졌습니다.

'지리산 정치학교를 시작하다 1/
어제 2021년 8월 20일,
드디어 천년의 고찰 지리산 실상사에서 지리산정치학교를 시작했다.
우리로서는 또하나의 역사적인 순간이었다.
앞으로 이 학교가 어떻게 될지, 어떤 결과가 일어날지는 모른다. 다만 문명전환이라는 시대의, 인류사적 요청에 우리의 힘이 닿는 한 응답하고자 하는 노력의 하나로 '전환과 생명의 정치학교'를 해보려고 하는 것이다.
앞으로 3년 동안 여기에 주력해보고자 한다.
승패? 결과는 모르는 것이다. 나비의 한 날개짓이 지구 건너편에 거대한 회오리를 일으킬 수 있는 것이라면 인류호의 진로를 생명의 길로 바꾸게 하는 데 기여할 수도 있을 것이다.
하지 않을 수 없기에 하는 것이지만 기쁨과 설레임으로 함께 하고자 한다.
이번 과정에 여러 도반들이 각자 역할을 맡아 진행하는데. 나에겐 여는 인사를 부탁해서 여기에도 나눈다.

반갑습니다. 먼길 오시느라 수고많았습니다.
저는 여류라고 합니다. 도법스님, 남곡선생 그리고 여러 벗들과 함께 지리산연찬에 참여하고 있습니다.
지리산의 이름으로 환영합니다.
이번 지리산정치학교에 함께 할 수 정말 고맙고 기쁘고 설레입니다.
사실 저를 포함해서 지리산연찬에서 정치학교의 개설을 제안한 이들이나 이 정치학교의 실무를 맡고 있는 이들은 모두 현실 정치, 제도권 정치의 경험이 전혀 없습니다. 무지합니다. 그래서 오히러 부담없이 새로운 시도를 해보려고 합니다.
초대말씀을 통해 이미 아시겠지만 이번 지리산정치학교의 중심 주제, 또는 키워드는 5가지라 생각합니다.

-전환입니다/새길 찾기, 총체적 위기입니다. 개인의 삶과 사회적 생존과 생태적 생명 자체의 절박한 위기임과 더불어 인간만이 아니라 지구 생태계, 생명계 전체의 총체적 위기입니다. 지구온난화, 기후비상사태, 불평등과 양극화 등 인류문명의 위기이자 지구생명계, 생태계 전체의 위기입니다. 살고자 한다면, 함께 살아가기 위한 새로운 길을 찾지 않을 수 없습니다. 전환이 절실한 이유입니다.
-생명입니다/생명으로 전환. 생명의 길 찾기입니다. 돈과 물질과 소유의 길에서 생명과 정신과 존재가 우선하는 길로, 인간 중심의 길에서 지구 생태계의 뭇생명이 함께 사는 길, 사람 사이만이 아니라 생태계의 뭇 생명들과 호혜상생의 길입니다. 서로 의지하여 있는 목숨임을 자각한다면 인간중심, 물질중심에서 다시 생명중심으로 돌아가야할 것입니다.
-정치입니다. 정치는 개인의 삶에서부터 사회와 국가의 체제 나아가 셰계적 구성형태까지 작용하는 가장 강력한 힘입니다. 그러므로 정치의 성격과 형태에 따라 사회와 세계의 구성을 다르게 할 수 있습니다. 위기와 대전환의 시기, 전환정치의 중요성은 이 때문입니다. 생태위기와 전환정치, 그것을 우리는 생명의 정치 또는 생태정치이자, 삶의 정치라고 생각합니다.
-지리산입니다. 한반도의 어머니산입니다. 이 어머니산의 품에서 생명과 생태, 전환의 정치를 시작합니다. 어머니 지리산이 전하는 메시지에 귀를 기울이고 그 품에서 생명의 기운을 받습니다. 인간 이전에도 여여했고 인간 이후에도 여여할 그 지리산입니다. 지리산의 마음, 지리산 품과 그 기운으로 전환정치를 시작합니다.
-도반입니다. 전환정치의 길을 함께 걷는 길벗, 동지이자 도반이고 지기입니다. 부처님께선 도반의 중요성을 묻는 질문에 수행의 길에서 도반은 그 전부라고 하셨습니다. 이는 새로운 전환정치의 여정에서도 같다고 생각합니다. 오늘 여기에 오신 동지들이 그 길에 함께하는 도반이라고 할 수 있을 것입니다. 서로간의 깊은 만남과 사귐이 있기를 마음 모읍니다

이번 지리산 정치학교의 짧은 과정이자만 아무쪼록 이 몇 가지를 화두 삼아 마음에 챙겨주시면 좋겠습니다.
사실 몇 가지 말씀을 드렸습니다만 여러분을 지리산정치학교에 모시게 된 가장 중요한 이유는 여러분들에게 전환의 정치. 생명의 정치에 대한 그 길을 묻고자 함입니다. 여러분의 마음과 지혜로 그 새길을 찾고 열어가 주시길 희망하고 기대합니다.
-진행과 관련하여 한 가지만 더 보태고자 합니다.
학교 진행방식은 무엇이 사실인가에 다가가기 위한 방법을 '연찬'의 형식을 취할 것입니다.
이와 함께 이 과정 전체에서 새겨야할 마음가짐은 '모심'. '모심의 마음'입니다.
자신을 모시고 함께 하는 벗들을 모시고 이 공간 안팎의 모든 존재들을 대하고 모실 수 있으면 좋겠습니다.
이 짧은 과정을 통해 한길로 가는 도반들의 인연으로 천년의 실상사 일주문을 나설 수 있으면 정말 좋겠습니다.
건강과 평화와 기쁨이 함께 하시기를.
