“In all my reading I have never found anyone who has so helped me in understanding the Scripture truth of the work of the Holy Spirit.” –Andrew Murray

Yearning for something beyond a mediocre and self-centered Christianity? Frustrated by the sterile intellectualism preached from many pulpits? Longing for the power of the Holy Spirit you have read about in books and believe is able to draw a wayward generation to Christ?

Many of us are on our faces before God crying out for an awakening in our country and in our world. Law passionately shows us the path to this end from a solid Scriptural foundation.

The Holy Spirit’s power is at our fingertips. It is within our reach. True awakening must start in our own hearts. It must start with us.

Besides the Bible, it is difficult to think of a more needed and relevant book for the Church today.

Kings Cliffe, 1755

My dear Friend, — for so I must call you, though unknown to me ...

Your true conduct under your present light is to turn inwards, and endeavor to find and feel the truth and reality of those doctrines there, which you begin to have a sight of.

For all I have written is only to help mankind, in this age of darkness, controversy, and delusion, to find the full truth and fundamental ground of all the doctrines of salvation, as plainly written and demonstrated in the essence, state and condition of their own souls, as they are in scripture.

Under such conviction as this, you come to this knowledge, that all is to be transacted between God and yourself; and that as you are, so is God towards you; and therefore you are to look for no good, but from such a state of heart, or kind of prayer, as keeps you continually uniting yourself to God, in steadily believing, and fully expecting to be delivered from all your evil, through the merits, mediation, and heavenly birth of the holy Jesus in your own soul.

Form no idea of the progress you make, nor stand upon the watch how it advances in you. Give God your heart; desire only to die to yourself and every thing that hinders your living unto Him, and then your road is safe and good, whatever you meet in it.

All my books will at present be of use to you, provided you read them only as your instruction how to find and know the misery and corruption of your own fallen nature, and the absolute impossibility of ever being delivered from it, but by turning to God through Jesus Christ. For they mean nothing else but to lead you from me, and from yourself, from all trust in created things, to expect and find all that you want, in God alone, in the immediate operation of his living Word and Spirit in your own soul.

In all my writings, I urge you to read more with your heart, than with your head: and never exercise your mind in apprehending any difficult matters, or stay upon them, when ever you meet them.

Your heart, given up to God, will have its sufficient daily illumination, and, in its proper time, will have its true fitness for the understanding of every matter that can be a blessing to you. And be assured of this, that no knowledge but that which is born within you from a heart in union with the eternal Word and Spirit of God, is worth a moment's thought.

My dear friend, Adieu.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true GEM! The truth about the Holy Spirit, and how He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2015

This is the THE BOOK, besides the Bible, that Christians, both new and old, should read! Remember what Jesus told his disciples?

John 14:26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

All of these years have passed by, yet I never understood the Holy Spirit! I have been a Christian for about 20 years. Upon my conversion, I was just happy that I had found Jesus and was "saved'. However, I became frustrated over time, trying to be a "nice Christian" all of the time. There had to be something more! Something was missing. By reading this book, I realized that I had it all wrong! I was not supposed to be "trying" on my own! There is no life in"trying" when it comes to Jesus Christ. And I had big issues that needed solving in my own life. So, about 5 months ago, I felt a real pull on my heart to really seek out God, and asked Him to reveal himself to me. I was lost without His guidance. I had my first "real" Holy Spirit experience.... it was such a blessing and encouragement! God Himself had reached out to me, I believe, because I reached out for Him! My heart told me to read the Bible to gain understanding about God and His Trinity. (I have not read most of it.....I'm sure there are many Christians who haven't read the Book either. No condemnation!) By now, I am almost through the Old Testament. God even gave me the gift of joy as I read his Word (I was worried at first because I thought it would be boring to read. I was wrong!). So ask for that gift of joy! The Old Testament has taught me so much about God, the Father. This knowledge that has changed my heart!
I write all of this to give you my perspective. Even though I believed in God, I hadn't really seen him lately at work in my life or those around me. My husband already had this book, and suggested that I read it alongside the Bible. My eyes were OPENED! I had no idea how I had been short changing myself all of this time. Here's the short of it: The Holy Spirit puts God's desires in your heart, then HE works THROUGH YOU. A constant companion and minister of the WORD. God with you!
I have have TWO HUGE breakthroughs in my life these past couple of months as a result of faithfully following the leading of the Holy Spirit. Those strongholds were simply demolished. One I had asked for, and the other was just a gift from the Lord. My hard heart turned soft, full of love.... like God's, for which I prayed. Unbelievable! Wonderful!
PASTORS: Tell your congregations to just start reading the Bible, and instruct them to pray to the Holy Spirit for life, help and guidance. Do this instead of preaching about what the church goer "owes" the Church. (Tithes)
CHRISTIANS, please read this book. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal Himself to you, and He will! Don't let His message be diluted or distorted. When you stand before Him at Judgement, you will have no excuses. Do not be deceived!
Read The Parable of the Ten Virgins Matthew 25:1-13. The last verses are haunting to anyone who confesses with their lips that Jesus is Lord:
11 “Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’
12 “But He replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’
13 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.
It is your heart and your mouth, which determine your salvation in Christ. I want to KNOW and BE KNOWN by our Lord. I pray that all who read this review will be blessed, in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit waits for you.

the content of this book is of the highest order...the printing and publishing is a shameful thoing.

it is evident that the publishers of this book are negligent and disinterested to say the least.

the amount of "totally ridiculous" typos in this publishing shows that the publisher is only interested in gettin money...certainly not interested in giving real attention to the publishing of one of the greatest Christian spiritual books ever written!

it is a shameful thing for a so called "religious book publisher" to be so disinterested in the actual content of this book...that they did not even proffread before publishing.

the people who published this book are of the same ilk as the false Christians cited IN this book by it's author..William Law.

the content of this book is so magnificent that it overshadows the GROSS negligence and carelessness of this so-called publisher of religious books.

will never buy anything from Gideon House again...they publish one of the greatest Christian books ever written without the courtesy to readers of proof reading the book. Shame.

I am happy with the 'content' of the book, it was a recommendation.
However, this edition is not good. I have only read about 10 pages, and have come across at least 10 typo errors, which is obviously effecting my concentration on the subject matter.
I would recommend anyone to look for another edition, and not buy this one if possible.

Keys to living in God's will.

Christians today would benefit from reading the old books filled with revelation knowledge like this one by William Law. What God calls us to is a sacrificial life where we deny self and seek to be pleasing to God. This can only be done in the Power of the Holy Spirit.

Be forewarned however. A seeking heart that desires obedience will find plenty of insightful instruction which is sure to bring conviction. Many people will find a tool God can use in their lives where godly sorrow that brings repentance can bring a fresh start to submit to God, clear away the debris of disobedience and begin again to walk with Him in intimate fellowship on the narrow path. Recommends it for: everyone who is wondering what the church is missing today
The nice thing about this book is: you don't have to read this book with your head, indeed more than that: it is in fact impossible. If you do so, you will miss the message. Only Spirit of God Himself can reveal Himself. You cannot read about Him to know Him. This book does not only talk about the power of the Spirit, it shows it clearly. You'll read not mere words but taste the Life the book talks about. William shows that we have a serious problem in our church. Although his name Law suggests something different, this brother knows to discern life from religion. It is a feast to read this.

Good content. Thought provoking. Sloppy transition from physical book to digital media.

Absolut Truth

Amazing book, but hard for me to read because of the Old English writing style. But his message is the foundation of a life, following Jesus in complete surrender and humility. It is all about Him, not us.

Hard read....need to engage with...Will read again. Challenging book. Christian life without the Holy Spirit is ineffective and dead. Life in the Holy Spirit is peace and joy and fruit producing, so alive. It is a life surrendered, so the life of Christ can be lived and seen.

Great book compiled by Dave Hunt. So many of the things William Law writes echoes the ministry on the topic of Christ vs. religion.

Description

Updated and adapted for today's society.

The style of the Serious Call is admirably adapted to its subject. It is serious, clear, and strong, but not graceful. There is never the slightest doubt about William Law's meaning. He conveys to the reader the exact idea that is in his own mind. The book is addressed to Christians, and it is, as its title implies, a Serious Call to be what they profess. The point is inevitable; it is driven home with extraordinary force, and Law's whole life gives weight to every word.

It is not necessary to agree with Law in all the details. But the questions that he urges upon the reader are vital, "Are you living the Christian life as it ought to be lived? Do you believe the Bible? Are you a true follower of Jesus or not?"

Kang-nam Oh

Facebook

예를 들어 “I am a boy.” 영어로 I am a boy이는 결국 I interam a boy이라는 뜻이라는 것입니다.

The Fall of Adam and Eve

The word sin means literally “missing the mark.” It indicates the failure to be what one should be and to do what one should do.

Originally man was made to be the created image of God, to live in union with God’s divine life, and to rule over all creation. Adam and Eve's failure in this task is their sin which has also known as "the fall of man".

The “fall” of man means that man failed in his God-given vocation. This is the meaning of Genesis 3. Adam and Eve were seduced by evil, the serpent, into believing that they could be “like God” by their own will and effort.
What is the Fall of Man?

When Christians refer to the fall, they're referring to the incident in Genesis 3, where the serpent comes to the first man and the first woman that God has created, Adam and Eve. And he tempts them to rebel against the creator. Adam and Eve fall into temptation. And they sin. They eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, which God told them not to eat from. And they sin.

Now, the reason why this is so significant in Christian thinking is the fall or the sin of Adam and Eve did not just have consequences for Adam and Eve. It did have consequences for them. They eventually died for their rebellion against God, but it also brought about repercussions for all of the human race. So when Adam and Eve sin, they became enslaved to sin in a sense, the Bible says, but also when they brought forth children into the world, their children were also brought into this slavery or bondage to sin. So Paul will say in Romans 5, that, "Through one man sin entered into the world. And by this one man, death was brought into the world."

So this is the big idea when they sin, when they fail from God's goodness, they brought sin into the world. As a result, death came into the world and God's curses came into the world. We know, for example, that God cursed the ground. God also said there'll be greater pain in bringing forth children into the world. But this big idea is that death came into the world, separation and alienation for the human race and their relationship to God. And it's transmitted through all the posterity of Adam and Eve. So every human being that's related to Adam and Eve, and that's everyone, is affected by the sin.

Now, the counterpart to the fall in Christian thinking is the resurrection of Jesus Christ. So the Bible also teaches, Paul teaches in First Corinthians that all in Adam die, but all in Jesus Christ are made alive. So by blood, we're related to Adam and Eve. We're in bondage to sin. But when we repent of our sins and trust in Jesus Christ, we're united to a new head, Jesus Christ. And because we're united to Jesus Christ, we move from a life of death, into a new life of eternal life with God forevermore.

The Fall of Man in the Bible: Genesis 3

Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God actually say, 'You shall not eat of any tree in the garden'?" And the woman said to the serpent, "We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, 'You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.'" But the serpent said to the woman, "You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."

So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths. And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.

But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, "Where are you?" And he said, "I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself." He said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?" The man said, "The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate." Then the LORD God said to the woman, "What is this that you have done?" The woman said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate." The LORD God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel."

To the woman he said, "I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you." And to Adam he said, "Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, 'You shall not eat of it,' cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return."

The man called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. And the LORD God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them. Then the LORD God said, "Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever--" therefore the LORD God sent him out from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken. He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.

Significance of the Fall of Man in the Garden of Eden

I think the one question on everyone's mind, regardless of their worldview, is what went wrong on this planet. Why don't all babies come home with their moms, and why don't marriages last? And why is there death? And why is there suffering? Every world view is wrestling, and they all have various versions of that. We know something's wrong but outside of Christ we really don't even have a solution. And outside of the Bible, we don't even really have an answer as to why things went wrong.

But if you look at the Bible and you begin with what's wrong in your mind the answer in the Bible makes immediate sense. The book of Genesis tells us that mankind rebelled against God, his goodness, his love, and perfection, and sought autonomy and the worship of self, and destroyed all subsequent generations of men by separating themselves from God.

And the federal headship that was in Adam, representing all mankind, touched every descendant. The Bible says we're all born having committed as if it were the sin of Adam.

So in Romans chapter five, the apostle Paul says there's a second Adam to save us from the first. And the first committed the fall and the second commits the promise and salvation and redemption.

First Corinthians 15, kind of going back to the very beginning, has this triumphant declaring oh death where is your victory, and oh death where is your sting? The sting of death is sin. That's true. And the power of sin is the law, but thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
