Description

In My Body, My Business, eleven New Zealand sex workers speak in their own voices about their lives in and out of the sex industry. Based on a series of oral history interviews, the book includes the stories of female, male, and transgender workers, upmarket brothels, escorts, strippers, private workers, and dominatrices. Caren Wilton prefaces the book with an introductory essay about the New Zealand sex industry, which in recent times has seen a lot of changes, the most profound being the decriminalization of prostitution in 2003. This engaging and highly readable book looks at what the changes have meant for the nation's sex workers.

An interesting glimpse into a period of time in my country, and gives a whole new respect for the people that have really rebelled and rallied to create change. Also interesting examples of how no two people will have the same experience of the same thing.
Very important part of NZ history and who better to tell it than the people in the thick of it.

I loved this book and how much I learned. I would’ve loved to hear the perspective of someone less than 30 years of age, who’s only known decimalization, a police officers view when the law changed (going from hating/harassing a group of people to actively communicating and protecting) and a client. Overall great read!

ABSTRACT

Based on data from the Danish part of the European Values Study 1981–2008, this article explores the validity of the claim for a spiritual revolution as proposed by Paul Heelas and Linda Woodhead. The article suggests an operationalisation of spirituality. The results of the analyses are that religious values—Christian faith as well as spirituality—tend to be stable over an individual’s life course.

This suggests that, if there is a spiritual revolution, it must be the product of cohort replacement.

If a spiritual revolution is taking place, Christian faith would be expected to decline in younger cohorts while spirituality would increase, but an analysis of cohort support for Christian faith and spirituality from 1981 to 2008 shows that both were constant across cohorts. Thus Danish data contain no indication that a spiritual revolution is taking place or will take place. Finally, we show that, contrary to theoretical expectations, spirituality and Christian faith are strongly correlated. A closer analysis reveals an indirect and more complicated support for parts of the theory since the two variables are explained by different factors and it shows that Christian faith, but not spirituality, is correlated with morality.

Notes

1. The advantage of the graphical model technique is that there are no statistical requirements for the character and distributions of the variables. A particular important advantage for our analysis is that the model may include two dependent variables at the same time. Also, the analysis can include ordinal as well as nominal variables and all variables can be included in the model from the beginning of the analysis. The significance of test results is evaluated by Monte Carlo tests. The statistical analyses were conducted with the DIGRAM computer programme (Kreiner, User).

THE SPIRITUALITY OF CONTEMPORARY DANES – BETWEEN PAGANISM AND SECULARISATION

Abstract

The topic of the article is the issue of the place of religion in contemporary Danish society. Not only Scandinavia, but all of Europe is subject to secularisation processes. As a result of this process, the role of the Christian religion remains limited or eliminated.

However this crisis of religion, does not affect the deeprooted desire for transcendence and individual search for it. In the case of Denmark, it appears in a return to neo-paganism – a reconstructionist religion that attempts to return to the religion of the “nature” of ancient and early medieval Germans. An example of this religion is the Ásatrú movement, dynamically developing in Denmark.

On the other hand, the need for transcendence is realised by the phenomenon of spirituality, which is the need for self-transcending.
Both of these directions are an expression of freedom, finding meaning, but also a conscious search for identity in a dynamically changing Europe.

Key words: spirituality, religion, Denmark, crisis of Christianity
