by John Van Auken (Author) Format: Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 45 ratings

John Van Auken, the Director of the Edgar Cayce Foundation has brought together these insights in this latest book. The key concepts of Cayce’s holistic approach to health and happiness are here: his insights into good and bad foods, the mechanics of healing and rejuvenation, therapies, tonics, and devices for keeping our bodies functioning well, as well as our minds becoming clearer and fully aware. Included with all the health information are metaphysical concepts and methods that bring the influence of our souls into our health and well-being. There is also a valuable list of resources and an easy to use index for finding exactly what you are looking for. There are also 13 illustrations. The Journal of the American Medical Association credited Edgar Cayce with initiating the American holistic health movement.

Dr. Shealy was first introduced to the work of the “father of holistic medicine,” Edgar Cayce, in the early 1970s. Cayce was the inspiration for his transformation from traditional medicine to holistic alternative therapies, which he has pursued for more than 30 years. Now combining decades of clinical work and research with advice from the Edgar Cayce readings, Shealy has created a blueprint for healing that each of us can follow with questionnaires for self-assessment throughout.

5.0 out of 5 stars A treasure chest of tools to help with your healingReviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 4 October 2016
Verified Purchase

This book is a great book for anyone interested in healing themselves using tools that Dr Shealy has presented in a clear, easy format that anyone can apply to themselves. Read through the book focusing on any issue that you have, and you will find wonderful alternatives to western medicine. If you are new to the the field of healing or you have been on a path of healing for many years, as I have, what this book offers you is a "program" that you can follow in everyday life. Not too much woo woo but enough of Dr Sealy's experience with such greats as the Edgar Cayce foundation and his experience as an MD makes this book a very interesting read. Dr Shealy is considered to be the Father of Holistic Medicine, at almost 84 years young, he is a walking example of everything that he presents in this book. Don't let his age sway you he has more energy than many others I see. If I had one thing to share with you that has helped me it would be the presentation of autogenic training that is in the book. I can honestly say that Dr Shealy has truly changed my life for the better with this book as well as his other books. I hope that it will help you also.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to Shealey's elemental announcing I hadn't heard of before.Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 8 September 2017

I looked up the company on line and got the oils and charts that are as big as an envelope, much more convenient. That company wouldn't honor a discount that was on their site when I ordered so I didn't reorder from them but still do the annointing and use the charts. I do MANY health practices but still find these useful over time. The book itself gives you a good background on the anointing process. I also watched the videos online too. Dr Shealey does wax nostalgic in this book but I love his avuncular energy so I didn't mind as some other reviewers do.

3.0 out of 5 stars Shealy "lite" with a lot of interesting filler from Edgar CayceReviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 9 January 2017
Verified Purchase

Shealy's advice is great, so this book IS worth owning.

However, a lot of the text is transcriptions of Edgar Cayce's advice/sessions. If you already have access to Cayce's work, you may be disappointed if you'd expected 100% Shealy insights.

I'm not disparaging the content, just explaining why I was surprised -- and a little disappointed -- after my initial "ooh, COOL!" reaction to the opening of the book.

Shealy's advice and references are tremendous. And, I take seriously this clear endorsement by Shealy of Cayce's work.

Nevertheless, it's not quite the book I'd expected

3.0 out of 5 stars Odd book, but maybe you'll like itReviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 21 November 2016
Verified Purchase

I'm sure many people respect the doctor, and have been helped my him. His role in holistic healing is apparently substantial. However, I find this book to be oddly confusing; certainly not inviting to sort out and read. Some simple definitions, then strange ramblings and examples, lists of traits, odd combos of numbers and letters heading up sections on various topics. I don't know, maybe I'll get something out of it. But it is indeed one of the strangest books on health and healing that I've come across in a long time.

Handbook of Spirituality and Worldview in Clinical Practice 2 PDF | PDF | Sigmund Freud | Psychiatry

Handbook of Spirituality and Worldview in Clinical Practice Paperback – 15 August 2004
by Allan M. Josephson (Editor), John Peteet (Editor), John R. Josephson, Allan M. and Peteet (Author)
5.0 out of 5 stars 2 ratings

This refreshing new work is a practical overview of religious and spiritual issues in psychiatric assessment and treatment. Eleven distinguished contributors assert that everyone has a worldview and that these religious and spiritual variables can be collaborative partners of science, bringing critical insight to assessment and healing to treatment. Unlike other works in this field, which focus primarily on spiritual experience, this clearly written volume focuses on the cognitive aspects of belief and mdash;and how personal worldview affects the behavior of both patient and clinician. Informative case vignettes and discussions illustrate how assessment, formulation, and treatment principles can be incorporated within different worldviews, including practical clinical information on major faith traditions and on atheist and agnostic worldviews. The book's four main sections give concise yet comprehensive coverage of varying aspects of worldview: Conceptual Foundation and mdash; The Introduction explains the significance of worldview and its context in the development of psychiatry; reviews misunderstandings about spirituality and worldview and how they can be resolved in contemporary practice; and discusses Freud's significant influence on psychiatry's approach to religion and spirituality. Clinical Foundations and mdash;Three chapters review how clinicians can integrate spiritual and religious perspectives in the basic clinical processes of assessment (gathering a religious or spiritual history); diagnosis and case formulation (including religious and spiritual factors); and treatment (including a review of ethical issues). Patients and Their Traditions and mdash;Six chapters discuss Catholic and Protestant Christians, Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, Jews, and secularists (atheists and agnostics), including a brief history, clinical implications of core beliefs, and variations of therapeutic encounters (both where patient and clinician share the same faith and where they do not) for each faith tradition. Worldview and Culture and mdash;A concluding chapter reviews issues of a global culture where faiths once rarely encountered in North America are increasingly seen in clinical practice. This well-organized text sheds much-needed light on an area too often obscure to many clinicians, fostering a balanced integration of religion and spirituality in mental health training and practice. Bridging several disciplines in a novel way, this thought-provoking volume will find a diverse audience among mental health care students, educators, and professionals everywhere who seek to better integrate the religious and spiritual aspects of their patients' lives into assessment and treatment.

Review

This book could not have appeared ten years ago -- it is a tribute to progress in the field of spirituality and health that it appears now.... The volume should enable clinicians to adopt a more sympathetic approach to their patients' worldviews, especially if they differ from their own, but a greater self-awareness on the part of the physician is no less important.

The religious situation in Sweden is different from that prevailing in the US. Nevertheless I found this book very interesting in its emphasis upon the broader concept of Worldview. Recommended reading for psychotherapists!
